Here they are only being used by music industry - especially from the UK - to defer their payment for your urgently required services - until you just stop reminding them.

Money talks in the world of copyright legislation, and that’s a big problem for ordinary Internet users

Copyright has always been about money. That’s why the copyright industry fights so hard to strengthen legal protections, in order to boost its profits. However, getting detailed information about how much money is involved, and who receives it, is hard, because there are so many small pieces to the overall copyright ecosystem. That makes a long post exploring money …

MusicAlly have reported that DIY and non-major music accounts for a quarter of Spotify streams:
In 2017 the majors and Merlin accounted for 87% of Spotify’s total streams, but that proportion fell to 85% in 2018; 82% in 2019; 78% in 2020; 77% in 2021 and now 75% in 2022, meaning DIY music is growing in proportion.

Some producers also do the sound engineering and mixing, but not always. In big studios with big budgets, those jobs are often handled by different people who are experts in that field. There is also confusion about #MusicProduction b/c you see a song labelled as a "remix" but what it really means is re-produced. An #EDM producer, for instance, will take the already-recorded tracks from a song and add different instrumentation/arrangement, etc. around the vocal lines. #Narcissism #MusicIndustry

For the uninitiated, producers sometimes negotiate a rate with artists to get "points" on the album, which means a share of the profits. This encourages producers (esp. working for record labels) to work with new/unknown artists b/c they get a stake in an album's success. Newer producers can do this as well, as they are working with artists who can't afford to pay much. It's a win-win, as both parties are invested beyond the recording process. #Narcissism #MusicProduction #MusicIndustry #NPD

I'll have to finish this story later; I need sleep. But I think you see where this is going, right?

The album took just over a year to complete, and I realized about 4 months in that something was...off with this lady. The signs were there from the beginning, but I was too blinded by her attention and compliments and delusions of grandeur to see it clearly. 😭

She asked me to produce--on the advice of a performance coach who encouraged her to hire women as much as possible for the project, since women are sorely underrepresented in the #MusicIndustry. As her producer, she said she would split profits with me, promising to talk to her lawyer, because she "couldn't afford to pay much" up front, especially with how much studios and session musicians can cost.

NITA STRAUSS Thinks Pop Fans Gatekeep Less Than Metal Fans
"There was no pushback. There was no, 'This is not what you're supposed to sound like."

ChatGPT making things up about the article:
Guitarist Nita Strauss says that metal fans have a reputation for being fiercely protective of their genre, but that pop fans are often less judgmental. Strauss had a wealth of experience in both rock and pop music, having performed for Alice Cooper, recording for the world’s most recognized pop performers, and now writing music for television. Strauss says that metal fans often think they need to gatekeep the genre, but that in reality, pop fans are more likely to show less judgment and more acceptance. Strauss’s believes the music that has been made by the popular artists of today is something to be celebrated. She hopes in the spirit of unity we can all come together and respect each other’s genre choices without judgement.

Wow. AI turns up in the music industry in a surprising way. A guy recorded some vocals, trained an Artificial intelligence with Drake's (a very, very successful rap artist from the US) voice and published the results.
This will bring up some interesting copyright debates. But the technical ghost of mimicking voices seems to be out of the bottle, so expect some weird songs with voices that you seem to know.

Once upon a time, Glorious Noise had a tagline on the homepage:

The amount of racism I still see inside of an industry that we consistently keep afloat is astounding. A reminder to be better allies offline, or your alliance is performative:

(....continued) #Music #musicindustry
Unfortunately the contraction in the new music market has meant record labels just arent taking the risks anymore with the new bands and so outside the few mentioned above the sea of amazing artists on platforms like soundcloud just arent getting signed and developed and funded in the way that used to happen so we arent gonna get the next Cure, Pixes, Smashing Pumkins or Nirvana, because its safer to just spend the money on the taylor swifts and Beyonces of the world, safe, boring, unadventurous and less likely to send the record company broke.

Its not just the nostalgia thing;- the live small venue scene has completely collapsed due to property developers taking all the classic live band pubs and renovating them either into apartments, or beer barns without original bands. And social media has changed in ways that make it almost impossible to promote songs without acompanying video.

I wish people would also try and explore the underbelly of new music a bit , because the Zs and Ys are actually a fairly experimental bunch, and theres literally hundreds of thousands of independently self produced albums released every year, and some of it is actually really really good, and theres something there for every taste.

A rant from a friends wall I posted regarding his marveling at kids listening to old music again. #Music #musicindustry
-------
I saw a statistic recently on the iTunes store that some 80% of music sales now are old music. Which on one level is fine, a lot of old music (and keep in mind "old" includes the music we grew up on in the 90s and 80s, we are not , alas, spring chickens anymore) is really great, and I get a kick when I see kids in town with Nirvana, Pixies or Sonic Youth T-shirts on, coupled with a slight discomfort with realising that 90s are a "nostalgia" era now.
But its an absolute nightmare for musicians releasing music right now. While a lot of the mainstream is utterly fucked music, if we are brutally honest it always has been. We remember the good 80s stuff, whilst choosing to ignore MOST of the music in the 80s where things like Collette and Jason Donovan. But some of the alternative stuff did get a listen and a lot of it ended up as the celebrated 'classic' music of the era. And heres the thing , outside the mainstream theres a LOT of really really good alternative bands. I enjoyed the shit out of the new albums that came out last year from Wet Leg, Pom Poko , Black Midi and OU. With that last one being one of my favorite albums of all time.

Seems like a good time to repost this article I wrote on @medium last year:

SSHRC-funded research by my colleague Brian Fauteax & team shows the unregulated, oligarpic nature of 'competition' in Canada is damaging to Canadian musicians, Canadian music, and its sustainability. They recommend our #CompetitionAct be updated to center the concerns of workers and consumers. This would have ripple effects on the health of many sectors in Canada, including music.

This Is What You'll Pay For: The Menace of Generative Music
#JaimeBrooks

Best piece of #MusicIndustry analysis I’ve read in the last few years

The lineup of this and the JP. Sousa piece from 1906 and Steve Albini’s The Problem with Music (both of which it mentions) really frames it as grim warning

Future looks wild for anybody wishing they could have been a pro #musician 😥

Was impressed by #ThePlaylist — the drama telling the story of Spotify's creation from six perspectives: Daniel Ek's, the #MusicIndustry, the lawyer, the CTO (neither of whom I knew), the co-founder/funder and a fictional musician.

First rags-to-riches story I've seen aware success stories tell one side of the story, and there's always many. Also didn't shy away from treating viewers as smart enough to learn about tech, explaining, for e.g. how and why it's a hybrid P2P & custom TCP/IP server.

Attractive People Make Better Music? How Gender and Perceived Attractiveness Affect the Evaluation of Electronic Dance Music Artists

A recent study conducted by researchers employed a cognitive sociological perspective to assess the impact of a DJ's perceived attractiveness on the evaluation of music fragments, specifically electronic dance music (EDM). Using a survey experiment based on randomized vignettes, a sample of 2710 individuals from the US population was evaluated.

The study found that there was a strong positive relationship between the DJ's perceived attractiveness and the evaluation of the music. However, while this was true for both male and female DJs, male artists slightly benefited more from their looks. These results provide further evidence for the notion that non-musical traits about artists play a role in the evaluation of music.

The study provides a new insight into the relationship between a DJ's physical appearance and the evaluation of their music, challenging previously held perceptions and adding to the understanding of the complex processes involved in music evaluations.
