I only started working as a #MusicProducer in a serious capacity once I was able to hear in stereo, after my surgery to get a BAHA in 2017. They drilled a tiny hole in my skull to insert the titanium post that the BAHA attaches to.
Not having it effects my ability to record, sing in pitch, mix, in ways an able-bodied person probably can't imagine.
And it costs over $5,000 to get a new one. Replacements are not covered under the ACA (it's not an OTC hearing aid) thanks to industry lobbyists. 🧵

The advent of music streaming services and death of the radio have definitely had a negative economical effect on the music industry, however, there's one aspect of it that I — as a music enthusiast and non-practicing music producer — really appreciate. It brought the death of the loudness war. Let me explain.
The loudness war, for those uninitiated, came about as music tech evolved. As each song wanted to stand out on the radio, the easiest way of doing so was making sure your song was heard over all the other songs. This meant that producers would push the overall loudness of the music, crushing all dynamics in an attempt to be as loud as possible, damned the consequences. While tech has gotten really good over the years which means it doesn't really lead to lots of distortion, it is still a destructive process that degrades the audio quality, crushing all dynamics and a lot of the musicianship.
So why did this loudness war die? Well, Spotify punishes loud mixes by default. When you submit a song to Spotify, they give it a loudness score that isn't based on the peaks but based on averages over time (how humans actually hear loudness). By default there's a setting enabled called "volume normalisation" which will reduce the volume of songs with a high loudness score. This means that songs with high loudness is actually punished by Spotify, having all the audio degrations of high loudness without actually being loud.
Of course, not everyone got the message, but overall, this marks a new trend in music that cares more about quality mixes and masters over maximum loudness. Mixes that respects the musicianship. And I love this!

I was born in #Köln, #Germany, lived in #SantaFe, #NewMexico, for over 30 yrs, and now divide my time between the #USA and #Portugal. I have released over thirty albums since 1990, starting with #NouveauFlamenco. You can find some of my music on #Bandcamp.
A little about myself: Much of my work is concentrated in music production. I produce music for albums, radio broadcast, music video and online content. I specialise in classical music but also enjoy working with traditional and folk musicians. I was sifting through some tracks last night and found I have at least nine in various states of completion, from motifs and concept to totally finished. I might actually be able to make my goal of finishing an album this year. I had convinced myself that I not only was bereft of ideas, but had wasted the last 10 months. Turns out I simply wasn't organizing my work in a way that lets me see my progress clearly. Lesson learned.
