Thought for the weekend:
Our eyes are narrowly adapted to conditions on Earth. To see reality as it truly is, we have to use instruments that go far beyond the limits of human vision.
These images merge visible light with infrared & x-rays to show a bigger universe:
https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/nasas-chandra-webb-combine-for-arresting-views.html #NASA #Space

Four composite images deliver dazzling views from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and James Webb Space Telescope of two galaxies, a nebula, and a star cluster. Each image combines Chandra's X-rays — a form of high-energy light — with infrared data from previously released Webb images, both of which are invisible to the unaided eye. Data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (optical light) and retired Spitzer Space Telescope (infrared), plus the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton (X-ray) and the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope (optical) is also used. These cosmic wonders and details are made available by mapping the data to colors that humans can perceive.

That #NASA post shows that many of the unexplained delays and/or change of plans can be attributed to the difficulty of coordinating #Perseverance's mission with the requirements imposed by #Ingenuity, especially when it operates in sub-optimal conditions, despite the efforts of both teams to carry out the plans.

It also suggests that an extended mission for the two future Mars Sample Return helicopters (#SRH) will have to be very carefully planned, and possibly include a "mesh network"

Image description from Chandra website states: tall columns of gray gas and dust emerge from the bottom edge of the image, stretching toward our upper right. Backed by dark orange mist, the cloudy gray columns are surrounded by dozens of soft, glowing, pink and purple dots; massive stars emitting enormous amounts of X-rays. The shapes, hints of movement, and colors in this composite rendering create a dream-like image. The misty orange background suggests a dusky sky, and the glowing pink and purple stars resemble fireflies. Churning with turbulent gas and dust, the columns lean to our right with small offshoots pointing in the same direction. These details evoke an image of yearning cloud creatures at dusk, pointing at something just out of frame.

A wonderfully deadpan history of Skylab's near-disastrous launch and rapid rescue, via NASA's History Division: https://history.nasa.gov/SP-4011/part3c.htm #space #NASA

A view of the Skylab 1 space station Orbital Workshop showing the micrometeoroid shield missing. A parasol solar shield was later deployed to shade this exposed area. This picture was taken from the Skylab 2 Command/Service Module during its "fly around" inspection. The Apollo Telescope Mount is in the background. The damaged and partially deployed OWS solar array system wing is at upper right. After an aluminum strapping was cut during the June 7th extravehicular activity, the solar panel fully deployed. The OWS solar panel on the opposite side was completely ripped off during the Skylab 1 launch on May 14th leaving only cables and tubing.

The Sun-blocking "parasol" that rescued the Skylab space station was woven by workers from International Latex Corporation. Here they are at work: Delores Zeroles (front) and Ceal Webb.
https://www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall/history/gallery/msfc_iow_14.html #NASA #History

Delores Zeroles (front) and Ceal Webb of ILC Industries, Dover, N.J., set up shop at NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center to stitch together a sun-shield for the Skylab Orbital Workshop, the first United States Experimental space station in orbit, which lost its thermal protection shield during the launch on May 14, 1973.

50 years ago today, astronauts moved into the world's first space station. NASA's Skylab had suffered significant damage on launch & required a makeshift sunshade to avoid deadly overheating.
https://history.nasa.gov/SP-4011/contents.htm. #Skylab50 #NASA

On May 26, 1973, the Skylab 2 crew began to activate Skylab, moving into the Orbital Workshop (OWS), where it was about 55°C (130°F). It took hours to assemble and deploy the parasol through the scientific airlock. Once deployed, the OWS's temperature began to drop.

Here, thousands of specks of light blanket the blackness of space. A ribbon of thick orange cloud runs along the bottom edge of the image, rounds our lower right corner, and streaks up the right side. A similar patch of roiling orange cloud can be found near our upper left. Between these gas plumes, centered near the top of the image, the star cluster is densely packed with specks of white, blue, and purple light. At our left, a large, bright white, gleaming dot is surrounded by purple mist. This is a hot, young, massive star, sending powerful winds outward from its surface. A patch of smaller dots, other young stars, can be found inside a faint purple mist near the center of the image.

A few images taken yesterday by JunoCam have already been posted at the Juno website.
Here is one, with some simple image enhancements by me.
The image was taken from an altitude of 69819.4 km at 06:31:10 UTC on May 16, 2023.
Keep an eye on https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing for more raw images and those processed by professionals.
Note that data from instruments other than JunoCam are not posted at the site.

That was fast! 5 hours after closest approach to Jupiter at an altitude of 4,200 km, Juno is racing away, back towards its apojove 6.4 million km away. It will be back in 38 days for Perijove 52.
Images will be posted soon by the Juno team and citizen scientists at https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing

All instruments on Juno must be clicking and whirring away at this moment as Juno passes by Io, at a distance of 35,000 km from its volcanic surface.

Saying hasta la vista and I'll be back 😎

This infrared image of Io is based on data taken on July 5, 2022 by Juno's Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument, from a distance of 80,000 km. The bright spots highlight active volcanoes that dot the moon.

JIRAM, developed by the Italians, contains an imager at 3.45 μm and 4.78 μm wavelengths and a spectrometer that covers 2-5 μm wavelengths. Its primary targets are Jupiter's atmosphere and its auroral regions.

We shouldn't expect images like this from Juno's close flyby of Io tonight. This image was taken by the Galileo probe on Sept 19, 1997, with its much higher resolution 7" Cassegrain telescope based camera. But the images in Dec 2023 and Feb 2024, from an altitude of 1,500 km, will have even better resolution (0.95 km/pixl) than this (5 km/pixl).
Check out this thread https://fosstodon.org/@AkaSci/109970779441795420 for a comparison between JunoCam and Galileo's SSI.
