🔊 Sound on for adorable kitten squeals!

It’s #NationalLoveYourPetDay! To make up for my super sad post about kids grieving pet loss, here’s a fun video of Belly trying to get comfy (but accidentally laying on her kittens every time).

Note: no kittens were harmed during the filming of this video

A mommy tabby cat trying to get comfortable in her nest, but every time she lays down, she smooshes two of her kittens. She tries to switch positions when they squeal, only to accidentally smoosh her other two kittens. No kittens were harmed during the filming of this video.

It’s #NationalLoveYourPetDay! Since my last post about kids and pet loss was super sad, here are FRESH KITTEN pics. The stray I took in (Belly) birthed these four babies in my bedroom four days ago, and they’re all doing very well. So cool.

#MondayMourning: Kids & Pet Loss

This is the side of National Love Your Pet Day that no one wants to face. With love comes grief and loss, especially for our little buddies with shorter life spans.

One of the hardest things a parent has to do is tell their child their beloved pet is dying or has died. It's human nature to try and protect them from such pain, but handling the situation with care and honesty helps equip children with the tools and proper mindset to handle "bigger" deaths later in life. As long as you use age appropriate language, there's no reason why young children shouldn't be told about death.

I have a whoooole long blog post about talking to children about death and grief, but here are some of the quick highlights:

❌DON'T say the animal was "put to sleep," as children take it literally and misunderstand. They might become afraid of sleep or wonder why their pet isn't waking up.

✅DO recognize that they may be more impacted by the death of a pet than a human. Don't guilt or shame them if they show bigger emotions for their pet than for a relative.

❌DON'T lie about the pet running away rather than having an honest discussion about death. This can backfire when (not if) the child discovers that you lied. Besides, they'll still feel the pain of loss whether their pet is dead or "missing."

✅DO share your own feelings and show children what healthy grief looks like. Model coping mechanisms, share memories, and maybe work together to create a scrapbook or other memorial keepsake.

So just found out it's #NationalLoveYourPetDay #LoveYourPetDay #nationalpetday I lost my beautiful #goldenretriever just over a year ago. I miss her every day. I wrote this the day after she crossed the #rainbowbridge It hurt but I had to mark that saddest of day somehow. #pets #goldenretriever #dogs #dogsofmastodon #dog

Yesterdays’ Forever Dog

Her hair was there
but she was gone
Her scent on air
but she was gone

Her empty bed
with hollow dent
Her paw print tread
with fun intent

Her favourite toy
beneath the chair
she hid with joy
today’s, still there

Her lead of hope
Nowhere to go
It couldn’t cope
It doesn’t know

But on she plays
It’s just the start
of endless days
inside my heart

Forevermore
she’ll roll and stroll
a bark, a spark
to light my soul
