The image is taken straight on facing the wide open bloom, so that the entire bloom appears as a circle, the layers of oval petals reaching out evenly from the centre; a full round plate of pink petals. The petals are a vibrant fuschia pink, some calling more attention in full sun, some emphasizing layers with shade, and the pistils and stamen are a warm, golden yellow with a tinge of green at the base. Below the bloom are three rose leaves, serrated edges pointy and sharp looking, contrasting the soft welcoming looking bloom. I went out to the local bird sanctuary for a stroll with a friend this afternoon and decided to bring my camera and was rewarded with MANY excellent finds, not least of which was this incredibly curious mayfly.

This mayfly not only tolerated my photos, but decided I was worth investigating and climbed up onto my hand as I was attempting to take photos.

Yesterday evening, the skies turned ominously dark, then filled with flashes of lightning and thunderous booms. It began pouring, then hailing (thankfully, not too large).

In less than an hour, the temperature plunged from the mid-70s to mid-40s F, two inches of rain pounded down, and piles of hail formed all over the place. It was a ferocious storm, the kind where all we could do was watch in tense awe.

Today it dawned clear, calm, and sunny, and the temperature rose back into the mid-70s by midday. Despite the sunshine and warmth, when I took a walk at midday, there were still piles of hail alongside the road.

This was one beautiful view I enjoyed during my walk, looking north at the foothills and a few puffy white clouds across the way. So grateful!

Took a little road trip into the desert last week. I love parts of the desert and would live there if it wasn't so hot. I love the Sanora Desert with it's Saguaro Cactus and they were blooming. The bird is a Thresher. Well done Arizona!

It is so wonderful to see the Monarch butterflies as they are now endangered. This beauty was sipping nectar from the pink Buddleia in the summer garden and the morning light cast a lovely soft glow on the butterfly and bloom.

"Breeding threatened mammals in fenced, predator-free areas is a common conservation strategy in Australia. The method is designed to protect vulnerable species and breed animals for release into the wild.

But our research – involving a cute, digging mammal known as a woylie – suggests the strategy may put animals at a distinct disadvantage once they’re fending for themselves.
