A perched harrier, especially one that perches long enough to be photographed, is something I rarely see. Typically they see you and immediately fly away, as if they are embarrassed to be seen loafing instead of working.

Here’s a robin I saw yesterday to bleach your eyes

One more of last year's yardbirds. This Red-breasted Nuthatch was the only bird to eat out of my hand, although Chickadees came close. Unfortunately, they were gone by late February, and haven't returned this season. Nuthatches will cache food, placing seeds in cracks in bark and even conceal their caches with debris or snow.

"A small, compact bird with a sharp expression accentuated by its long, pointed bill. Red-breasted Nuthatches have very short tails and almost no neck; the body is plump or barrel-chested, and the short wings are very broad. Red-breasted Nuthatches are blue-gray birds with strongly patterned heads: a black cap and stripe through the eye broken up by a white stripe over the eye. The underparts are rich rusty-cinnamon, paler in females." (AllAboutBirds).

I was going to meme this Teal. I'll leave it to y'all!

A male Green-winged Teal with a bright red band of reflected, late afternoon sunlight in the pond water ahead of it.

Some birds on 11.29 at Loft's Pond, one of south shore Nassau County's multitude of small fresh- and brackish-water ponds originally part of a broad coastal marshland, but now embedded in suburbia. These are important-- although insufficient by themselves -- habitats for many species of fauna, way-stations for migrating birds and winter residences for waterfowl. The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was a particularly accommodating subject, landing in a bush close by and, later, on a tree right over my head. The Green-winged Teals, foraging in the pond, were also relatively tranquil subjects, for a change. I chose not to crop so as not to lose perspective of our current engagement with their habitat. The other species shown are a White-throated Sparrow and, yes, a Red-BELLIED Woodpecker 😜 .

"Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are fairly small woodpeckers with stout, straight bills. The long wings extend about halfway to the tip of the stiff, pointed tail at rest. Often, sapsuckers hold their crown feathers up to form a peak at the back of the head. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are mostly black and white with boldly patterned faces. Both sexes have red foreheads, and males also have red throats [this one is a female]. Look for a long white stripe along the folded wing. Bold black-and-white stripes curve from the face toward a black chest shield and white or yellowish underparts."(AllAboutBirds)

"A pair of Green-winged Teals in a pond containing some plastic and other waste. "Green-winged Teal are very small ducks. They have short, blocky bodies and their tails sit high out of the water. The head is large, the neck is short, and the bill is relatively small. Adult males have grayish bodies with a narrow white vertical stripe extending from the waterline to the shoulder. In good light, their dark heads are cinnamon with a wide green swoop from the eye to the back of the neck. Females are brown with a yellowish streak along the tail. Both sexes have green wing patches in the secondaries (speculum), but these may be hidden when not in flight." (AllAboutBirds).

"White-throated Sparrows are brown above and gray below with a striking head pattern. The black-and-white-striped head is augmented by a bright white throat and yellow between the eye and the bill, which is gray. You’ll also see a less boldly marked form, known as “tan-striped,” with a buff-on-brown face pattern instead of white-on-black." (AllAboutBirds)

The Red-bellied Woodpecker "often appears pale overall, even the boldly black-and-white striped back, with flashing red cap and nape. Look for white patches near the wingtips as this bird flies." (AllAboutBirds). And, oh, yes, the belly does have a red wash.

Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron. Tough to distinguish from the Yellow-crowned. A couple of things: both birds have a brown top surface with white spots and a streaked buffy under-surface. The way I tell them apart is 1) large white spots at the ends of the wing feathers, while Yellows have smaller spots and white edges on the feathers. 2) The bill on the Black-crowneds is black above and yellow below, while the Yellow-crowned juvie has a mostly dark bill. 3) The posture of the Black-crowned is kind of slumped, while the Yellow-crowned tends to have a longer-necked, more erect stance.

I do enjoy a greylag goose but they also kinda terrify me, especially if they see you with a sandwich. However, this one was very nice.

A greylag goose, swimming on slightly rippled water, heading directly towards the camera. The water appears dark blue but the bird has sunlight shining on it coming from the right. It also has a big drip of water coming off its beak.

"American Wigeons are medium-sized, rather compact ducks with a short bill and a round head. They tend to sit on the water with their heads pulled down, giving them a no-necked look. Breeding males have a brownish gray head with a wide green stripe behind the eye and a gleaming white cap. The body is pale cinnamon with white patches on the sides of the rump that contrast with the black undertail feathers. In flight, note the white patch on the upperwing and a green patch on the secondaries. Females and nonbreeding males are warm brown with a brownish gray head and a dark smudge around the eye. A Greater White-fronted Goose, normally found in the western half of North America, and uncommon in our area.

"A medium-sized, heavy-bodied goose with a small bill, thick legs, and a short neck. Adults are mostly brown with white feathering around the base of a pinkish-orange bill. Black barring marks the belly and the undertail is white. In flight a white "U" at the base of the tail is visible. At rest, a thin white line stretches across their sides. Juveniles lack the belly banding and white feathering around the bill. Both juveniles and adults have orangish legs." (AllAboutBirds).

I found this very colorful male Taiga Merlin this morning near Manhattan KS. Of course the light was minimal for taking bird-in-flight images, but that seems to be my luck with Merlins. They do like cloudy days!

One of the northern migrant Red-tailed Hawks that I see around my part of Flyover Country has returned for at least the third winter in a row. It's a pretty cool beast; light-morph Harlan's Hawk. In the winter of 2021-2022 (two winters ago), I found this bird within a few hundred yards of where I saw it today (see ebird checklist at https://ebird.org/checklist/S146354616).

Black-bellied Plover foraging at MNSA, Oceanside, NY

"A chunky, large-headed shorebird with a short, thick bill (heavier than bills of golden-plovers). It has long, pointed wings and moderately long legs.

Breeding males are a dazzling mix of black and white: checkered upperwings, a black face and belly, a white crown, nape, and undertail, and dark legs and bill. Adult females in breeding plumage are similar but with less contrast. Nonbreeding adults are pale gray above and grayish or whitish below. Juveniles are but more scaly-looking on the back. All plumages show black “armpits” in flight." (All About Birds)

Lots of Bald Eagles in my patch of Flyover Country right now. I found this 4 or 5 yr-old bird today near Manhattan KS. It is almost but not quite in fully adult plumage. Still a few white body feathers, a few dark tail feathers, and some dark smudges on that almost-yellow bill.

Sneaked up on a crow friend
