So early today something got into the Robin #nest, I think it must have been the Crow I saw yesterday. I have no video but of the three hatchlings there seems to be only one left, and the last unhatched egg, which was destroyed. Nature can be cruel to watch but hopefully the "sacrifice" helped some other babies to thrive. And I hope the last baby makes it. Well that was nice!
Because of the loud begging calls from the nests I found two Great Spotted Woodpecker nests in the local forest 💚
I didn't take many pictures as I felt that I was disturbing them. As soon as I saw the first nest I stopped walking closer and I took 1 rather bad picture. Soon after I heard a repeated alarm call of on the parents and walked away.

I'll put the sound recording of the begging call in a reply.

How do I know if a birds nest is abandoned? Or what is it?

I was trying to hack back a duranta hedge to manageable height and discovered this #nest . I pruned around it, not wanting to disturb possible occupants, but also hoping that the missing branches makes it a less appealing site.

That was a few months back. I'd ultimately like to finish the pruning job (but that hedge is non native/semi-invasive, scrawny and already awkward on the ladder)

Probably 4m from the ground so I can't see in. Are nests reused? Can I remove it? Or do i just wait a few years till it rots away? I feel like a 90s cartoon developer-villan!

Since 2008, a pair of geese have met on the Salt Water Marsh to court & copulate 😁. Historically, they only came in my yard when the babies are yellow.
A few years ago, a fox or coyote took the nest on a shoreline, not far from here. This nest is also at risk, but not while I am here, I can't allow Coyotes to cross the yard, or the cats & I will be at risk.

There's a cuckoo in a nearby park and I'd never heard so clearly that it sounds like a cuckoo clock as this morning.

I also heard busy-sounding reed warblers. I think someone is up for a rude awakening this spring. (Cuckoos are parasite breeders that lay eggs in other's nests, frequently reed warblers.)

Eight days old and the feathers are growing.

Another couple of days and they will be grumpy teenagers [or the blue tit equivalent thereof!]

Fingers crossed, a couple of years ago we watched a similar nest to this stage then a cold snap, less bugs, and the nest failed. So sad.

Finally got hold of a #raspberrypi Installed it in a very #apple style aluminium case and have it up and running with #HomeBridge. #nest thermostat and #ring cameras very nicely displayed and working in the #apple home app. The HomeBridge software is very good and the beauty of this approach is Apple home syncs across all devices including those of invited members (wife) without me having to configure. Just need to configure a few more plugins and clear my Home Screen of multiple #iot apps.
