It's very complimentary, but I have to laugh at the comment about the "unbelievable futurism of the chip implants" as #Elon is doing exactly that with his company #Neuralink.

After years of Elon Musk claiming that human trials were "imminent" at Neuralink, Reuters is now reporting that the FDA rejected their first application in early 2022.
The agency cited major safety concerns involving the device's lithium battery, the risk of the implant's tiny wires migrating elsewhere in the brain, and whether the device could be safely removed.

A car and a medical device are safety-critical systems where the demanding, foundational issues are exactly the same.
It is a bit disturbing that the #Neuralink executive cited does not seemingly realize that.

Depending on how advanced Neuralink is other than marketing, I might actually consider getting an open source similar alternative.
I’m not letting anything closed source touch my brain, my senses and my thoughts, but if someone makes an equally (or more) advanced open source alternative I might want it depending on its capabilities. Probably we’re still quite far from the capabilities I’m thinking of tho, I imagine the first few versions would be simpler.
Recent tech trends have been making me a "conservative". Can we plz go back to the days before large AI language models? And also while we're at it. Can we plz axe Neuralink?
Like, I get that neural implants have good usecases like restoring functionality for people with disabilities like being blind or being paralysed. However, there are some significant downsides.
If we assume no capitalism, there are two immediate threats. Hacking and bugs. The Neuralink is using wired communication with your phone to process data, which opens up for wireless hacking. And imagine the kinds of harm you could do if you have a direct interface to someone's brain. Even if the functionality of that is limited to vision, you could cause some serious harm to someone by messing with their vision. And, well, bugs. Sometimes computers crash or behave unexpectedly. Imagine that having ramifications on your brain.
But that's ignoring the elephant in the room. Capitalism. The constant drive to make more money. Imagine if you had two choices. You could pick the affordable model, but to finance it, it shows you ads directly to your brain. Or you could pick the expensive model that doesn't do that. Oh, but turns out that Elon Musk bought that company and introduced Neural Blue. If you don't start paying your monthly neural subscription, the device will just lock you out of your brain. Oh, and even if you pay for the subscription, you still have to see the ads and they'll track your thoughts and send them to some centralised database where they'll be stored unencrypted because for-profit companies don't care about security until they get caught.
A brain computer interface would truly drive capitalism into its endstage. The optimisations you get from having a brain interface would make it impossible to not have one, but the companies control these chips and can inject capitalist propaganda straight into your brain, making you an even more efficient cog in the machine that is built to serve the owning class.
This is why I say I feel like a conservative now. I want us to not head in this direction. I wouldn't want this even in an anarchist society. The days of being a tech optimist is far gone. The two major developments going on atm are just way too scary imo (I may talk about AI some other time).

As with anything #Musk, #Neuralink is a nightmare shit show. But of all his … endevours .. this one has to be the most despotic.
Note if you are not a #gamer or #halflife fan, this won’t make sense.
- Oh! AND Musk's #Neuralink company is now under investigation for basically hurrying the research process and animal cruelty.
As I stated before, Musk should be no where near #MedicalDevice development.
One could see this coming a mile away.
This is grotesque and it is a preview for how human patients will be treated, under a Musk-controlled operation, if this #Neuralink device ever receives #FDA approval to proceed to a next stage.
(And it is crystal clear that the FDA should not allow this charade to proceed.)
I don’t know about y’all, but after seeing what Musk has done with Twitter, I would absolutely never trust something he had a hand in making being implanted into my brain. Just saying.

So there's a brief shot of a primate supposedly signalling its desire for food via a #neuralink device. Using word completion, it types "can i please have snacks", is presented a tablet with pictures of snack choices, which it then selects (via a hand press) and is given grapes.
Several troubling elements:
It is blowing my mind listening to Neuralink CEO Elon Musk asking people to come work for him less than a month after Twitter CEO Elon Musk fired 75-plus percent of that company's workforce.
Just incredible.
