Call me an EV shill, but we've had ZERO problems with our 2015 Nissan Leaf. It was a California car we took to northern New England, and literally the only maintenance items are tires and windshield washer fluid. We drive it all year long.
I can't tell if the report is conflating [B]EVs and PHEVs to make for a damning indictment of EVs overall. I certainly agree that PHEVs are more complex, because it literally has two kinds propulsion systems.
Granted anecdotes are not data, but I find it odd my own experience is so disparate from Consumer Reports findings/surveys.
Fwiw, I've been biased against Nissan due to many years of having ridden in B210s, 210s and Sentras. You might say I turned over a new "Leaf".

Looking to replace our aging Skoda Octavia after 10 years (it's 14 years old) with an #EV. Not much else planned this weekend. R is going to see a country music concert this afternoon in Foxboro and she'll have good weather for it. I wish she would get serious about new car shopping, as her lease runs out in 2 weeks. You'd think she'd be psyched to get a new car, but what can you do? I’ve owned my first #EV for 3 days. I’ve driven 33 miles so far this month. According to the data for my car I’ve saved 6kg of CO2.
I haven’t a clue how accurate this is (someone is bound to ask the stupid question about where the electricity came from 🙄) however this still makes me happy.
