Reminder: there's another 2SLGBTQIA+ Rise Against Hate rally coming up this Sunday Oct 29 at the #YEGdt Legislature Building, noon-2:30pm, to advocate for the importance of providing 2SLGBTQIA+ education and safe spaces, and against the UCPs AGM resolutions which target 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. Those interested can find details and meeting location on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1013923589855413
So relieved today that we outnumbered the anti-trans bigots that want to take away children's rights.
In fact, the government of Saskatchewan did just that this week. Using the notwithstanding clause to harm kids.
At the counter protest today, our side danced and sang and cheered, even in the rain!
It had to be an MP from Alberta, didn't it? 🙄
‘Save the Children Convoy’ Says Conservative MP Invited Them Into House of Commons as ‘VIP’ Guests
@Kristynwongtam: RT @RNAO: @ShelleyEvansRN @Kristynwongtam @DorisGrinspun In closing remarks, @Kristynwongtam thanked @RNAO for its leadership on this issue. "Thank you for the work you are doing and keep it up."
Feb 19, 2024. That's when the intolerant hatemongers behind the "million march for children" are planning a repeat performance.
We must stop them. Their misguided views are their own, but they are part of a massive plan to strip the rights from marginalized communities - starting with their attacks on trans and gay communities.
Let's start now. Plan to shut them DOWN on Feb 19, by being 100x stronger in numbers.
My problem with the conservative idea of "parental rights" is that it leads to dismissing and, at worst, rejecting each child's different healthy life-giving needs that must be met. Want to truly protect children? Do the best to give them what they truly need.

I very much appreciate Nate's take on this issue.
Without fail, it is spot on.
If you are interested in what's going on in politics in Alberta, I cannot recommend the @thebreakdown enough.
It is always a relevant, thoughtful political commentary.
Please take the time to watch this week's Alberta Politics Roundup:
INCREDIBLE turnout at the Rally for Trans Youth today. The legislature grounds were chock full of queers and allies—and that turn out was with under a week's notice.
My faith in humanity (and Manitobans) is much stronger after seeing the outpouring of love and support at this event.
Peg City Don't Play!
Organizers talking about his 5, 10 year old self not feeling belonging. Speaks to the kids who may not know people like them and expresses they are loved.
OK sounds like we're doing acknowledgements and going to organize for the march.
Dedication for those who couldnt be here today. Notes some couldnt be here today because it is not safe for them. Threats of violence and family disowning and job insecurity keep some people from being here. "I hope (one day) you can be your true self without fear."
Organizer speaking now. Tearing up a little starting to speak about their journey. Started testosterone in January 2018 and talks about being so scared of needles the NP had to not tell them when they were doing it. Says it saved his life. "Wouldnt be standing here today if I couldnt speak to my guidance counsellor at school. My name is James."
Crowd cheers in support.
"...recognize that person youre holding space with. Make that effort as we move forward collectively. .. there are far more of us than there will ever be of them"
"Today we made a commitment to each other. .. We made a promise to Manitobans across to our province... nothing and no one will ever get in the way of that."
Candidate recognizes the youth and kids. They speak about the events of wednesday and not the importance of not minimizing the magnitude of what happened and speaking the truth of it. There was violence. To lie about it is shameful. "Vote them out."
Speaker says they are a cyclist and are familiar with feeling unsafe from winnipeg drivers, but says the feeling of danger and threat of violence from wearing queer pride pins overshadows that now.
I can relate. Fuckin sucks man.
"It's really scary to think that at any point in the future, our rights could get taken away. But right now it's reassuring to know that there are laws in place, meaning schools have to have a safe space for queer kids." https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/yukon-protest-lgbtq-rights-1.6973340 #TransRightsAreHumanRights #NoSpaceForHate #Whitehorse #Yukon
“an inquiry by her office showed almost two-thirds of LGBTQ students don't feel safe at school, compared with 11 per cent of heterosexual students, and attempts to erase them from school curriculums are hateful.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/sogi-marches-bc-1.6972195 #NoSpaceForHate
So relieved to see an outpouring of support for 2SLGBTQIA youth across the country, including unequivocal messages from leaders at all levels of government and leaders in health and education asserting #NoSpaceForHate. Canadians united against bigotry, now and always. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🇨🇦
I worked the frontline with homeless street youth for more than 5 years. By far the largest demographic were LGBTQ kids who had been forced out of their homes onto the streets by angry, intolerant abusive parents. Many identified as Trans. Too many died young before they found out someone loved them and cared about them.

Couldn’t stay for very long but i’m glad i swung by the #NoSpaceForHate counter-protest at Queen’s Park.
Happy to report that turn out was healthy and at a glance larger than the fascist protest
Deets are slim but so far it sounds like the hate protest is a flop and the #NoSpaceForHate demonstration is eclipsing it.
This won't be decisive. As long as the govt allows money to flow to hate groups from foreign groups, and from tax-exempt religious organizations, then we'll continue to see elevated levels of hate activity.
I can't head downtown to the #NoSpaceForHate counterprotest today, I can only offer moral support.
But I'll be following along and watching to see if anything develops in my neighborhood, which has schools, and offices for boards, unions, some political officeholders.
Last night we were at meet-the-teacher and ran into a transgender student friend.
That's who I think of being harmed by the hate. A 12 year old who's figuring out life.
