The Hirschfeld Institute in Berlin opened in 1919. It was dedicated to investigating biomedical explanations of sexual orientation and of transgender identities, as well as supporting LGBT+ people. As part of his work, Magnus Hirschfeld helped ensure that trans people were able to change their names and have an ID card. Sadly, the institute was shut down by the Nazis in 1933.

#Unicode 15.1 added gender-neutral families: Previously the #family-#emoji was made up by one or two {Man,Woman}-emoji and one or two {Girl, Boy}-emoji, joined together by the zero-width-joiner.

Now there is the alternative of having one or two Person-emoji followed by one or two Child-emoji, again joined with the zero-width-joiner.

I’m not completely sure what to think of that: On the one hand I like the idea of not having to specify gender all the time and this way we only have to deal with four new #ZWJ-emojis and avoid the issue of how to order the genders.

On the other hand it doesn’t allow mixing between gendered and non-gendered individuals within a family, which could be useful if you only know or care about the gender of some of the members or if you have #NonBinary people in it.

And then there is of course still the question about families with more than 2+2 members. Often necessary, but it would also bloat the database further.

I really want a better and more reliable enby equivalent of "girl" or "man." I know out here in Cali, people see "dude" as effectively neutral, and in some gay circles the gay "gurl" is effectively gender neutral, but that doesn't carry everywhere. I just love to be able to drop the distance and be like, "I hear you, gurl!"

Of course, it's a minor thing and I can always try to use other phrases that are a bit more bulky. I just keep finding more and more that I want us to develop more extensive terminology for us non-binary folks that doesn't just refer back to the binary (though playing with that can still be fun).

One of my favorite things about mastodon is the ability to write a note on people's profiles you can update any time and only you see!

Realizing I have a spot to put reminders for myself about a person's pronouns, things they have mentioned that I related to (like if they are disabled), labels/terms they use as self descriptors or specify they do not want to be used to describe them, and any other facts about them or interactions I want to remember is AMAZING.

I made myself a little template early on with some of the info I am most likely to want to know so I can keep it all organized and also note if certain info is NOT shared- because, for example, as a trans person I may feel differently about a post about transphobia based on if it is by a person who has said they are trans (which I put in the note) v a person whose hasn't shared anything related to their gender (so the note has a blank there and they MAY be trans) v someone who has specifically said they are cis.

All you gotta do is go to a person's page, click the three stacked up dots, and click 'add note' and it will show up anytime you go to their page right above their bio!

I don't think I could possibly overstate how helpful it is to know I don’t need to worry about forgetting basic info about a person because I have a note I can check anytime I need to. It’s particularly helpful if you (like me) have any issues with your memory but honestly every human forgets stuff sometimes so I highly recommend it for any and everyone.

editing to add: if someone is an asshole I will also use the note to write something like "this person sucks", "ableist", "this person seemed great but then said X and ewwww" so if I end up encountering them again I get the reminder, which is also super helpful!

Okay, nonbinary folks. Serious question here:

Am I nonbinary?

How would I know that I am?

I came out as pan/poly last year. I was always an ally, but there are definitely some areas of gender that I did not investigate closely.

I'm fine with he/him. I'm fine being called a man. I'm masculine-presenting to the world. This is all fine.

At the same time:

* I really don't care about "gender roles."

* The notion of presenting as "too masculine" or "too feminine" is ridiculous to me. Just be you, dammit!

* The notion that you cannot do this thing because you are not of the right gender is also ridiculous.

* I wouldn't care much if a lover could take over in some areas of my life. This does not require them to be any type of gender.

* My marriage was to a woman 20 years older than I am. (26-year relationship.) Definitely not the standard gender roles playbook.

* I cry easily and without reservation. Not "manly" if you go by the usual playbook.

* I'm a caregiver Dom, but my primary concern is to blanket my lovers in comfort and affection. I'm definitely not domineering.

I've been thinking I would like to get back into practicing martial arts and would love to maybe host an informal group so I have people to practice and learn with! I practiced Taekwondo and Judo for over a decade, once upon a time, and used to teach back in my early 20s....but I am really out of practice and out of shape, so I need folks I can feel comfortable exercising and learning with.

What are #transgender and #nonbinary folks' experiences in #Rotterdam and the #Netherlands southwest coast?

I'm considering going to Rotterdam for a vacation, but I wasn't sure how friendly folks are towards trans and non-binary people.

I was also thinking of visiting some towns near the coastal dams, like #Scharendijke and #Stavenisse and #Zierikzee. I photograph nudibranch, and there seem to be a lot in those areas according to iNaturalist.

I know the general advice is that the southern part of the country is not trans-friendly. However, I didn't know if that applied to southwestern towns near the coast.

For context, I'm a short AFAB person with a beard who wears colorful masculine cut clothes. People tend to assume I'm either a trans man or a cis gay man, so I'm interested in how that might cause people to treat me.
