That's great! Fire crews now believe the fire will not spread any further, given current conditions. Extra resources are now being redirected to help with the Shelburne fires.
It's worth noting that the fire is very much still an active concern. It's actively burning, and it's burning hot. It's going to take a lot of water before emergency services feel secure that its truly out everywhere. Especially since it's not currently out anywhere. But we're expected to get a lot of rain this week, so fingers crossed! #HalifaxFire #Halifax #HRM #NovaScotia #NSWildfires

Aerial images and video of the Tantallon fire have been going around today, showing the region blackened and charred.
This is unfortunate, because what they don't show is flames. This is leading to people on social media believing that the fire has been successfully extinguished.
I cannot stress this enough: things do not need to be golfing flames to be on fire. Anyone who has cooked with hot coals will know this. Those charred regions are still flame hot, and can flare up at any moment. They are merely burning slowly, in a lower oxygen environment.
There's still considerable risk of spread, and if the fire does flare up again, it has the potential to do so in a catastrophic fashion. Sparks can travel, large distances, and they can ignite trees many metres away.
Please don't think that just because you're not seeing a towering inferno that the fire is out.
It's not even contained right now. #HalifaxFire #TantallonFire #NSWildfires #Halifax #HRM #NovaScotia
Press conferences notes cribbed from @HRMFireNews@twitter.com:

- The coast guard is currently supporting firefighting efforts in Shelburne
- 20 woodland firefighters from New York and New Hampshire are either on their way or have arrived

- Reinforcements are coming

Another challenging firefighting day around #Halifax with gusty winds and moderately low relative humidity values with extremely dry fuel load.

Holy crap, this is bad, and it’s only prelim estimates.
"Municipal fires and impacts update – May 29, 8:30 p.m.
The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that preliminary estimates indicate that approximately 200 homes or structures have been damaged as a result of the fires. A full assessment of the damage cannot yet be confirmed. The estimated numbers are based on initial visual inspections by first responders."
As of 15:00 ADT Monday, the #HalifaxFire had burned 788 ha. Other details, including how evacuated households can register with the government to receive needed resources in the linked article.
#HalifaxFire information from a recent press conference:
• 14,000 evacuated (earlier reporting from CBC had said 18,000).
• The #fire is burning back on itself, but since it spread so quickly yesterday there’s still a lot of fuel.
• 100 firefighters using 30 assets with a plane from Newfoundland.
Emergency services are also asking that people stop sending drones up to check out the wildfires. They risk interfering with efforts to map the fire and usage of the water bombers.
From @HfxRegPolice@twitter.com:
... you cannot operate an aircraft or drone within 9.3 km of wildfires. It is illegal, you could be impeding firefighting operations ...

The ‘GOES East’ basemap (zoom out) shows the wind is currently out of the north.
The map has other GIS overlay layers you can turn on including MODIS and VIIRS heat detections. For help, see the “Map tips” link in the upper left corner.

NS folks, there is a province-wide burn ban right now - you probably heard that. For obvious reasons I think. But also… advice is to please avoid burning anything outside, even your propane BBQ or fire pit. You just never know, better safe than sorry. Fire crews are already overworked.
10:00 ADT METAR from CFB Shearwater:
Temp - 10°C
Dew point - 1°C
Sky - Scattered clouds
Wind - N at 31 km/h gusting to 46
Local news reporting from #Halifax, #NovaScotia on the Fediverse. Including #HalifaxFire information.
09:50 ADT - #HalifaxFire not currently visible on #weather radar. A good sign that, for the time being, it’s not experiencing extreme growth and/or creating difficult firefighting conditions. This does not mean these conditions will continue all day.
Morning update on the #Halifax #wildfire situation. About 18,000 people evacuated. Winds gusting to 50 km/h out of the north will generate rough firefighting conditions today but the humidity will be much higher making #fire behavior less extreme.
Information on shelters, detailed evacuation maps, etc. at the link.

I know there are Halifax Examiner folks still active on here. Thanks for sticking around. Really noticing Tim's absence these last could of days.

Internet disruptions related to the wildfires have been reported here in Nova Scotia, with over-the-air (satellite, cellular, etc.) service being affected due to the high volumes of smoke.
Given the lacklustre television coverage here, that leaves people most likely to be affected with only radio as the most reliable source of information.
Keep your FM receivers on, folks. Check to see if your cellphone has one (many Android phones have unadvertised FM receiver chips in them). If the fibre line feeding your neighbourhood get torched, or if you're using over the air connections, you may struggle to get timely updates otherwise.

Advice I see going around elsewhere: if you might even be remotely in the path of the fire, do not put your phone on silent/DND overnight and make sure you can get alerts if they are sent.
I know it’s habit to have your phone automatically go into DND/silent/etc so figured it’s worth mentioning.
Also, have a bag packed with your important docs, meds and basic essentials ready… just in case.
Here is an interactive map with satellite hotspot data for the 2 major wildland fires in #NovaScotia. Zoom in for detail. There will be additional hotspot data in the morning after the next satellite passes.
The “Map tips” (link in upper left corner) explains the MODIS/VIIRS **data limitations**.
I am working on updating the ‘Tips” and also getting access to the Sentinel satellite data.
