Someone today opined on whether short stories are worth the effort vs writing and selling long forms. If I recall correctly, they said they found they'd wished they'd stuck with the long forms after years of experience.
Generally, I'd agree (I'm a novelist myself). But then I thought: /If I had not spent the last five years writing lots of shorts, and recently very short stories, I'd not have gotten the experience starting and completing stories the way I have./
Writing novelette length, short, and super-short has gone a long way to vanquishing my recurring writer's block. It's given me the repeated experience of starting and finishing stories, building my confidence that there's always more to write. (I burnt out in '01 and didn't start writing again until '15, so I'm recovering.)
One of the hardest things for me to get over, which plagued my early career, was my inflated opinion that my ideas were somehow special and unique (they're not), and that I would never come up with more than a few worth writing. Writing lots of little stories cured me of that delusion.
My little stories might never sell, but they could act as regular content to convince people to return to my author website. I use shorts to introduce people to my writing style and to explore ideas I might incorporate in longer forms. I've definitely used it to work out character backstory, even stuff that might contradict canon. It keeps me from fearing the experimental stuff; at least it gives me a chance to get the nonsense out of my bloodstream. Some of this might go into an anthology one day (as if, but I can hope.) In any case, they're the practice equivalent of tossing nickels and dimes into the wishing well compared to burning C-notes attempting a sketchy novel.
This isn't writing advice, nor am I advocating one way or another. I'm simply reporting what I've observed for myself.

I really loved this #movie #adaptation! #DevrimLingnau puts on a truly enchanting performance as the titular character. Her first scene with #HannahRae (Laura) was surreal and subtly unsettling. Absolutely masterful performance and cinematography.

I'm writing a long novella, which means a self imposed discipline of no chapter longer than 2000 words, and each of five acts at 8000 words. Completed Act One and it seems to be working.
Usual me writes a sloppy 110,000 words and then hacks it down to a better plotted 100k.

Reading "Peter Darling" by Austin Chant, it's a good riff on the Peter Pan story with gay/trans themes done well! It's a novella, so I'm almost done. I couldn't find anymore good gay Sci-fi after reading Bone Rider (lewd sounding name, but it was a good idea).

I also recently got fascinated with Gérard de Nerval, a figure of French romanticism who also was a major influence on surrealism.
I read his novella AURELIA OU LE RÈVE ET LA VIE both in French, then in German to practise my French.
Was delighted to see that I was able to understand the general gist of this often convoluted story full of the most fantastic visions but also needed the German translation to get all the nuances and details.
Weird Fishes has been out in the world one year today. I like to imagine it still floating stealthily out there, tentacles drifting, ready to sting and ensnare. I appreciate everyone who has read this strange novella and shared it with friends. And if you haven’t read it yet, what makes you think you can escape its anemone embrace?

I’ve had a good reading run lately, have enjoyed:
If Found, Return to Hell - Em X Liu — entertaining fantasy novella with the cosy “I got myself into your situation and now I have to help you, goddammit” vibes.
Zero Hour - Ruth Ware — went on a major binge of domestic thrillers (female-led, usually wife and/or mother whose pleasant middle-class life is disrupted by murder/blackmail/secrets) a few years ago and Ruth Ware is about the only author I kept once I was throughly sick of the genre. She’s very versatile, swinging from historical thrillers to this ultra-modern tech-based thriller. (The other book that still sticks in my mind from this reading era, by the way, is Fierce Kingdom by Gin someone - that one hits hard when you’ve got a kid the same zoo-visiting age).
The House With All the Lights On - Jessica Kirkness — Australian memoir about her deaf grandparents, but very well-informed (not inspiration-porn). More than anything, it makes me regret not having the chance to be closer to my own grandparents.
The Great Dead Body Teachers - Jackie Dent — another Australian memoir about grandparents, this one tracing their path to whole body donation. Fascinating! Macabre for some.

I was a little worried when I saw him; Gareth Llewellyn had dark hair in a thick braid nearly to his waist, a bushy beard, and generally looked disreputable in corduroy pants, a baggy shirt, battered fedora, and green Wellingtons. He reminded me of the homeless men I saw on the streets back home, except that he smelled good.
