I've been thinking, since you can set your swap to be stored on a virtual drive (gdrive is one I've seen, NAS as well, s3-compat possible), and while, yes, the latency is horrific (and the idea is a bit of fun rubbish in utility), it could be massively useful for increasing 'active' ram usage in older devices/operating systems <2000 if you can work out the networking stack and perhaps a FUSE model on them.

Every time a new C compiler comes out, we don't toll the bells and holler in joy, "Hey look, a new #programming language".

"We ended up building a #unikernel based on the drivers offered by rump kernels via rumpkernel.org: Rumprun. We were not trying to build an #OS-like layer but one day simply realized that we could build one which would just work, with minimal effort. The noteworthiness of the Rumprun unikernel does not come from the fact that existing software such as Nginx, PHP, and mpg123 can be cross-compiled in the normal fashion and then run directly on the cloud or on bare metal. The noteworthiness comes from the fact that the implementation is a few thousand lines of code ... plus drivers. The ratio of drivers to “operating system” is on the order of 100:1, so there is very little operating system in there. The #Rumprun implementation is that of an orchestrating system, which conducts the drivers."

No interest in using the #Ubuntu release, but this latest LMDE based on #Debian 12 Bookworm feels very solid and polished already.
I usually just use #Debian, but the additions and utilities by the #Mint team all feel like an enhancement to the overall Debian experience. The #Cinnamon DE is pretty nice to use too.
Well worth checking out.
Interesting - will have to try this - Tails is a portable operating system that protects against surveillance and censorship.

This is a reminder that sometimes #Chrome / #Chromium -based #browsers are necessary for certain websites or for #cybersecurity on an #OperatingSystem / #OS such as #Android and #MacOS due to #Firefox 's lack of system sandboxing, both unfortunate but legit reasons.
As many others have said, @Vivaldi is the best #browser for the job, rejecting tracking from #Google, the sites you visit, and themselves beyond a basic census with #Privacy and #security by design.

It's been a week since reinstalling
@opensuse #openSUSE #Leap on my #ThinkPad with a Seventh Gen #Intel i7 Pro. While it crawled with both #Windows #Windows11 and #Windows10, there has been NO lag at all after installing #Linux. I just tried running @whonix on it while plugged into a #Thunderbolt dock hooked up to an ultrawide monitor, and it was as snappy as ever.
Windows #OperatingSystem bloat is real, and if you've got old hardware, the speed issues are probably due to your #OS.

I have an old Chromebook that just lost all it's updates (Like last month, Aug 2023 was when support ended for it).
I tried to put Linux on it, but turns out it is ARM based (if I would have know that when I bought it I wouldn't have bout it).
I did get PrawnOS Arm64 to install, but WiFi doesn't work.
Anyone know of any other #ARM based OSes that might work?
Most of the ARM based distros seem to be centered around the Raspberry PI & don't even boot on this thing.

Ok its been years since I was last on Distrowatch, but I am surprised today that the top distro on it is called MX Linux, which I have never heard of.
So what is so good about it?
How the times have changed.
I remember when #Microsoft decided to "integrate" #DOS into #Windows and one could no longer have DOS as it's own entity (and the gradual stripping away of capabilities that came with it).
Pondering - was Microsoft's biggest mistake in the #OS wars moving in this direction? Thoughts?

I'm quite interested in the #OS for #development and would love to hear from others what they think about it.
Is there (for now, on Mac) a setup, with which i could use a secondary monitor to pin certain windows / processes? Mainly i need to keep an eye on build status, maybe a slack window, but otherwise i don't need to interact with it really. But i also don't want it to disappear when i tab to different windows.

@marcan this reminds me how #Linux also was the first #OS to run on #Itanium and how the #GCC is even the best compiler for that architecture - even better than #Intel's own!

But yeah, the only thing that would make @AsahiLinux even faster on #AppleSilicon would be if compiling stuff would be done entirely in RAM wherever possible, leveraging 10x->1000x more IOPS and lower latency.

So, after a bit of utilizing both desktops, I've decided to daily drive #Fedora with #GNOME over openSUSE and KDE.
There is something so... Fedora just clicks, dude. It works so well outta the box and feels like a great *almost* stock experience.
I love really getting to make my desktops mine with a fair bit of stability, Fedora provides this in spades. 💞 #Linux #OS

I continue:
- to occasionally muck about with my #Fedora #Kinoite & #oS #MicroOS VMs.
- my scepticism that immutables have any credible use FOR ME.
- to find more Cons than Pros. Here's another i just rediscovered today.
In ALL my "std" #KDEPlasma systems [multiple distros, both my PCs, multiple VMs] one of my most-used apps is #Yakuake, [dropdown terminal]. I want this also in my immutables.
K & M don't have it ootb. It's not in [real] #Flathub. HOW do i install it, yet stay "immutable"?
