Been on my feet working all day. My hands/body ache, but it is what is required to provide food for us. Not a complaint. I like being connected to my nourishment. I know exactly where it comes from, how it was cared for and what it takes to have such a basic need met. I am grateful. Time for a wave of pure WATER!

Why study the #ocean? A standard list of reasons might include making predictions about climate or because it’s a source of food and other resources as well as a major transportation route. My list is a bit different:

1. To understand, as much as possible, our home and source of life;
2. To appreciate our own smallness in the grand scheme of things; and
3. To participate in something larger than our human selves.

Why don’t we give reasons like these when justifying scientific research?

El Niño and Extreme Atlantic Ocean Heat are About to Clash

"Globally, warm sea surface temperatures that can fuel hurricanes have been off the charts in the spring of 2023, but what really matters for Atlantic hurricanes are the ocean temperatures in two locations: the North Atlantic basin, where hurricanes are born and intensify, and the eastern-central tropical Pacific Ocean, where El Niño forms.

This year, the two are in conflict – and likely to exert counteracting influences on the crucial conditions that can make or break an Atlantic hurricane season. The result could be good news for the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts: a near-average hurricane season. But forecasters are warning that that hurricane forecast hinges on El Niño panning out."

The ocean is full of connections, and here's another one. The idea that whale poo helps redistribute the critical nutrient iron in iron-poor seas has been around for a while, but now it looks as though the penguins are at it too.

What’s important is that when species suffer population decreases, it’s not just about losing charasmatic animals - it’s about breaking the links in the ocean systems for recycling and energy distribution.

Ocean surface warming is “off the charts” and “eye-popping.” In March, sea surface temperatures off the east coast of North America were nearly 14C higher than the 1981-2011 average. ‘What a wonderful book . . . a history, ecology and conservation exploration. I loved it!’

Today is the 93rd anniversary of the 1st test of the Bathysphere (May 27th 1930), the first capsule to take humans down into the ocean depths. It was William Beebe’s idea & Otis Barton did the engineering. They were the first people to see deep ocean creatures in their natural habitat, setting a record dive depth of 670 metres in 1932. Beebe described it as “dangling in a hollow pea on a swaying cobweb, a quarter of a mile below the deck of a ship rolling in mid-ocean”.

Headline at the Guardian:

"Is it too late to halt deep-sea mining? Meet the activists trying to save the seabed"

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/may/21/is-it-too-late-to-halt-deep-sea-mining-the-activists-trying-to-save-the-seabed
___________________________

If mining companies are given the go-ahead to exploit the ocean depths, the environmental cost will be devastating.

Miners hope to drill into hydrothermal vents (those iconic deep-sea chimneys), and also extract metals from mountains protruding from the seabed. Most commonly explored, however, and likely to be the first mining undertaken, are what’s known as polymetallic nodules: lumps of metals and minerals mixed with all sorts of sediment, which sit on the ocean floor.

This mining will see hordes of large mining machines moving along the seafloor like bulldozing combine harvesters, scooping up nodules and whatever else is in their path.

“Everything around them will be disturbed,” says Dr Diva Amon, a deep-sea biologist. “The top 10cm for certain, home to the majority of life on the seafloor. That means huge amounts of habitat and animals will be lost.” Out the back, water, sediment and shredded wildlife will be pumped out, wreaking havoc. Everything else collected will be pumped through a network of pipes up to a ship on the surface. “Here the nodules will be separated from other materials like water, sediment, and likely crumbled pieces of metal that will be spewed out into the ocean as waste.”

Something I learned today: books get trailers now. Blue Machine is out next Thursday (June 1st) and here's the trailer for it.

You can also hear me talk about it at the launch book talk in London at @Ri_Science on publication day: https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/blue-machine-uncovering-oceans-power #Ocean #BlueMachine Do join us!

Beautiful sunset view from the beach at Ala Moana Regional Park, Oahu, Hawaii. Centrally located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, the 100-acre park is a favorite with locals. In the ocean, a distant reef, swimmers and surfers can be seen enjoying the warm water while the setting sun shines golden on the gentle waves and reflects in the clouds above.

Global warming can be deadly. Almost everyone knows that.

Fewer people know about ocean acidification, and how destructive it can be.

Fewer still have even heard of the ocean oxygen problem — which, in the long run, could lead to far greater damage and many more extinctions than any other threat we face.

Researchers complain that the oxygen problem doesn’t get the attention it deserves, with ocean acidification and warming grabbing the bulk of both news headlines and academic research.

Just this April, for example, headlines screamed that global surface waters were hotter than they have ever been — a shockingly balmy average of 70 degrees F. That’s obviously not good for marine life. But when researchers take the time to compare the three effects — warming, acidification, and deoxygenation — the impacts of low oxygen are the worst.

As the atmosphere warms, oceans around the world are becoming ever more deprived of oxygen, forcing many species to migrate from their usual homes. Researchers expect many places to experience a decline in species diversity, ending up with just those few species that can cope with the harsher conditions.

Our future ocean — warmer and oxygen-deprived — will not only hold fewer kinds of fish, but also smaller, stunted fish and, to add insult to injury, more greenhouse-gas producing bacteria, scientists say. The tropics will empty as fish move to more oxygenated waters and those specialist fish already living at the poles will face extinction.

Oxygen levels in the world’s oceans have already dropped more than 2% between 1960 and 2010, and they are expected to decline up to 7% below the 1960 level over the next century. A 2021 paper showed that the oceans are already committed to a fourfold greater oxygen loss, even if CO2 emissions stop immediately.

A wide view of two harbour buildings, one 90s modern looking and beige on the left, and another in blue and white Victorian warehouse style on the right. Between them flows a deep blue canal that leads the eye to the green mound of Signal Hill rising above rows of houses in the distance under a silver-blue, partly cloudy sky.
A seal relaxes on a floating wooden dock, their head turned upward to soak in the warm glow of the sun, with turquoise water, a black and white boat in the background and the base of Devil’s Peak in the distance.
View across some rugged grey rocks and a turquoise by with the imposing round shape of the Cape Town Stadium under a dramatic clear blue sky in the distance.
View across a pristine ocean scene under a clear blue sky on a sunny day, with some rocks and bright green succulents covering the foreground with a lone pink flower punctuations the frame at the bottom right.
