Here come the Western Oklahoma Bulls – ABA Basketball
https://realabaleague.com/here-come-the-western-oklahoma-bulls/

Minor-league basketball players will make a major impression here when the American Basketball Association season tips off in November.

The Western Oklahoma Bulls, one of the ABA’s newest teams, will play home games at Elk City’s Arrowhead Center.

My opinion (and not those of my nonprofit employers) -please vote NO in December.

We have too many unmet human needs in this city for us to consider giving so much money away to a private interest, even a beloved NBA team.

"In August, a clouded leopard mother named Rukai gave birth to a kitten, who’s “eating, sleeping and growing,” according to the keepers at the Oklahoma City Zoo where he was born.

The tiny tropical predator, named JD, is doing well, and the zoo reported that as part of a program to ensure the clouded leopard’s survival in the wild, this little fellow will play an important role as an ambassador to the public, 99.999% of whom will never see this nocturnal predator in the wild.

But even with all this seriousness, the zoo couldn’t help but forecast their August as “cloudy, with a 100% chance of making you go ‘Aww.'”

Clouded leopards are native to South and Southeast Asia, but have disappeared entirely from several nations like Vietnam and Taiwan. Current science states that it was the first cat to diverge from the common ancestors of all big cats over 9 million years ago."

#US States Take Aim at Protesters’ Rights

Right to Peaceful Assembly at Risk

by Jonathan Pedneault, February 16, 2021

"#Peaceful #protests are protected by the #UnitedStates Constitution’s First Amendment as well as #international #HumanRights law. But a legislative assault aimed at eroding these protections is underway in several state legislatures.

"It’s nothing new. Various states have long-tried to curtail the right to #protest. They do so by legislating wide definitions of what constitutes an 'unlawful assembly' or a 'riot' as well as increasing punishments. They also allow police to use catch-all public offenses, such as #trespassing, obstructing traffic, or disrupting the peace, as a pretext for ordering dispersals, using force, and making arrests. Finally, they make it easier for #corporations and others to bring lawsuits against #protest organizers.

"While proportionate restrictions on the right of peaceful assembly, like creating buffer zones around abortion clinics to ensure access, may be necessary, the use of catch-all offenses against peaceful #demonstrators or the imposition of increased penalties to deter assemblies are not.

"At a time of large mobilizations across the US, attempts by states to deter and impose criminal penalties on peaceful protesters should be stopped.

"According to the US Protest Law Tracker, created by the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, there are currently 51 bills under consideration in 24 state legislatures, including as many as 10 in #Oklahoma, that they warn would threaten the right to assemble peacefully.

"Among the proposed laws are nine, including three in Oklahoma, that the Tracker reports would provide civil and/or criminal immunity for drivers injuring or killing protesters unlawfully disrupting traffic and one stand-your-ground bill in #NewHampshire that would allow deadly force against protesters 'likely' to use 'any' degree of unlawful force during a riot.

"Other bills would increase penalties for participating in unlawful protests, something that happens automatically in many jurisdictions once someone marches without a permit, or for committing an offense – including jaywalking or trespassing – while in an unlawful assembly.

"International human rights law protects the right of peaceful assembly and requires authorities at all levels to facilitate such assemblies and avoid unnecessary or disproportionate restrictions on them. The mere act of planning or participating in a protest should not be criminalized. Authorities are also required to protect people participating in such assemblies – bills that encourage or allow violence against protesters are inconsistent with those obligations, and states should abandon them."

Text from article:
For Bennett and the ownership group, however, this isn't enough. He is demanding massive new subsidies from the taxpayers of Oklahoma City. If the city refuses to pony up, the implicit threat is that Bennett will move the team to a city that will meet his demands.

Currently, the Thunder play in the Paycom Center, which was built in 2002 at taxpayer expense. When the NBA franchise moved to Oklahoma City in 2008, the city approved over $100 million in improvements... In 2019, the city approved another $115 million in improvements...

About $70 million of those improvements were put on hold in 2022 when the Thunder ownership indicated they were no longer interested in renovating the Paycom Center. Now, Bennett and the other owners want a brand new arena. In July, Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt (R) warned that the team could leave if the city didn't build the new facility. Bennett originally moved the team from Seattle in 2008 after the city rejected similar demands for a new publicly financed arena.

Previously, Holt said that Thunder ownership had committed to make a "significant financial contribution" to the new arena. Last week, however, plans for a new $900 million arena for the Thunder were finalized. The team contribution would be just $50 million, with taxpayers footing the remainder of the bill. That's about $3,200 for every Oklahoma City household.

Text from article:
The molar pregnancy Jaci Statton had would never become a baby. It was cancerous, though.

At the last hospital in Oklahoma she went to during her ordeal last month, Statton says staff told her and her husband that she could not get a surgical abortion until she became much sicker.

"They were very sincere; they weren't trying to be mean," Statton, 25, says. "They said, 'The best we can tell you to do is sit in the parking lot, and if anything else happens, we will be ready to help you. But we cannot touch you unless you are crashing in front of us or your blood pressure goes so high that you are fixing to have a heart attack.'"

Oklahoma has three overlapping abortion bans, with different and sometimes contradictory definitions and exceptions. A study published Tuesday along with a commentary in the Lancet medical journal shows hospitals all over Oklahoma are struggling to interpret the laws and create policies that comply with the state's abortion bans. The resulting confusion is having dangerous consequences for women like Statton.
