Very happy to see that the Journal of 20th Century Media History has started publishing.
It's an excellent new #openaccess #mediahistory journal just launched under the editorship of Rob Rabe:

Remember folx: there is no such thing as a free lunch. These 'read and publish' agreements are funded by massive pre-paid contributions from libraries. We pay subscriptions AND pre-paid publishing fees. #CAUL #openaccess

The #EuropeanCommission is finally considering "if #OpenSource software (#OSS)…can be used as a foundation for developing the new #publishing platform" for EC-funded #OpenAccess research.

Unfortunately, the new software would merely "underpin" and supplement #OpenResearchEurope (#ORE), not replace it. ORE is proprietary software owned by #TaylorAndFrancis. When the EC called for bids on ORE, it did not require open code despite many calls to do so.
Update. Here's another #paywalled #editorial supporting #OpenAccess. In fact, it announces that the journal is flipping to OA. Even the one-paragraph OA excerpt includes a critique of paywalls.

The journal is published by the British Infection Association.

The new system "will no longer consider only the impact factor [#JIF] of the journals in which scientists publish…And in an attempt to reduce the level of public funds being spent on publication costs, assessors will take into account papers published on noncommercial, #OpenAccess publishing platforms that don’t charge author fees [#APCs], such as Open Research Europe."

"Medieval Feminist Forum" sounds like a cool #OpenAccess journal!
https://scholarworks.wmich.edu/mff/about.html
But sigh: ir.uiowa.edu switched to some #ExLibris product and removed the journal archive, all incoming links were broken with no redirects in place, #DOAJ and #Unpaywall know nothing about it, BASE doesn't have the new OAI-PMH endpoint.
I bet the repository admins are crying in their sleep. Sometimes working in #libraries is frustrating.
So, #InternetArchive to the rescue:

Terribly confusing headline here. The journal was (formerly) diamond open access (no author-side fees), and recently changed to an APC-OA model. The editorial mutiny is a rejection of the APC model. The editors are unhappy with the APCs, not with diamond https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/mass-resignations-diamond-journal-over-ps2500-author-fees

Anthrobots were derived from the adult human lung, which self-constructed into a multicellular motile biobot after being cultured. They were found to be capable of traversing, and inducing rapid repair of scratches in cultured human neural cell sheets in vitro. This suggests the potential for personalized regenerative medicine.

I've seen repeatedly this Venn diagram of #OpenAccess types used in discussions of #OA publishing. It wrongly classifies Gold OA as restricted to author-pays, exclusive of Diamond OA, which I find very annoying.

Well, this amazing paper provides an answer to that question:
From 2015-2018, authors paid $1.06 billion in APCs straight into the pockets of the big corporate publishers.

I'm doing some quick and dirty analysis of publicly available DOAJ data; the public data dump.
https://doaj.org/docs/public-data-dump/
I've found approximately 940 society-affiliated, diamond open access journals. Could be many many more in there if I search for non-English ways of writing society.
Doesn't seem to chime with: "A few society journals have adopted Diamond OA..." 🤷♂️
I have an honest question about #OpenAccess #ScholarLed publishing, especially (but not exclusively) in non-STEM fields: The general narrative is that academics do all the work, and publishers just add their logo and take a huge fee, so we're better off doing it ourselves. But there's one thing publishers actually do, which is #typesetting. (Okay, not they, but their contractor in India.) Universities/libraries might offer an OJS instance, but no typesetting service. How do you solve this?
#MIT just released a major 56 pp report on #OpenAccess & the future of academic #publishing. I esp like the fact that the last 12 pp are devoted to 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 "to spur research that will…inform future policies & their implementation."

Maybe scholarly societies have taken the instruction to follow the money too literally? There now are societies that make 83% of their nearly $700 million in revenue from publishing (American Chemical Society). Or 88% of $130 million (American Psychological Association). Or 91% of $5 million (Biochemical Society). In essence, societies like these (there are hundreds predominantly in STEM subjects) are publishers first and societies second.
Pretty much everybody by now realizes that "transformative agreements" (TAs) are a dead-end. And yet, the German DEAL consortium now offers a new TA. As if to add insult to injury, the DEAL is with Elsevier, the most reviled of the ex-publishers turned surveillance platforms. Because the TA is opt-in (signatures required by Jan 15), we summarize the reasons why agreeing to it would be a bad mistake:
Let your institution know, what you want them to do!
Resilience: another advantage of openly-licensed content
https://rossmounce.co.uk/2023/11/30/resilience-another-advantage-of-openly-licensed-content/
New musings from me on cyberattacks, 'unplanned downtime' , the downside of consolidation in academic publishing, and the benefits of the open access repository ecosystem and open-licencing of content...
"the dominant #openaccess movement has so far been EU and US-centric, leading to unequal participation from other regions. The consequences are worrying, as high article processing charges (APC) and transformative agreements (TAs) have created an inequitable system in scientific publishing. "
https://upstream.force11.org/the-imperative-of-reforming-scientific-publishing/

Wow, PLoS' first logo, from the year 2000!
In 2005, I joined the advisory board PLOS ONE and it started publishing in 2006. #scientificPublishing #openaccess
What's the gap between #mitigation scenarios assessed by the #IPCC and national greenhouse gas inventories - and what does that mean for pledges towards #ClimateNeutrality?
Great work just published #openaccess in Nature, led by my IIASA colleague Matthew Gidden...

#France institutional repository of #scientificPublications @hal_fr has announced that it will now allow to collect automatically #openAccess version of papers they list.
This involves #openAlex data and then locating potential files via #unpaywall .
Note for those in France: they're willing to have people test this, notably those who have open access papers not yet in their base.
The Open Climate Campaign (#OCC) is looking for a #communications manager.

Online now: Video of "prestigious journals struggle to reach even average reliability":
http://dx.doi.org/10.34734/FZJ-2023-04610
You can't be bothered to read about all that is wrong with #impactfactor and journal rank? Here is the video with all the data on how the most prestigious journals publish the least reliable science.
New study: "More than 70% of #DiamondOA journals are published by universities, around 15% by publishing companies, while the rest are published by societies, professional associations, or libraries. A disruptive approach requires a shift in researchers’ mindset, recognizing and promoting the value of these journals, and actively seeking to publish in them."

Congratulations to Sheril Jane Hook on her newly approved doctoral dissertation. One thread of her argument is that #OpenAccess is too often ignored or excluded by the field of #InformationLiteracy.

Coming over the next few months: #OpenAccess to 40k hours of security video of the #Jan6 mob attack on the Capitol.
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/house-speaker-says-jan-6-security-footage-posted-online-public-access-rcna125778
The OA video will exclude footage that "compromise[s] security" or "doxes, or harasses private individuals."
#Republicans made the decision. Dem #JoeMorelle objected on security grounds.
Recall that in Feb 2023, #KevinMcCarthy gave 41k hours of footage to #TuckerCarlson, but not to the public.
