#OpenStreetMap
Just seen interesting hashtag #DumpGoogle and following it now!
So many interesting alternatives are available for Google "services" around!
I expect this tag will explode today with posts describing this fake "Ad Privacy" move from Google, but many posts describing the alternatives will have this tag.
Another alternative service to use instead of Google Maps is #OpenStreetMap .
@synlogic you should put effort into https://www.openstreetmap.org/ instead ! #openstreetmap
et là pour définir un sous ensemble on va mettre un signe ÉGAL je sais c'est dingue mais les gens vont comprendre que ça fait sens !

#OpenStreetMap has a few “This data was last checked on $DATE” tags (e.g. `check_date`).
Shouldn't there be a “I'm a mapper, and I think someone should check the on $FUTURE_DATE”? i.e. if you think a shop will open on a date, or a road will close, or open, on another date? 🤔

War was anderes (Ach, Suche... :()

Wtf.

Number of gyms in London per 1,000 people for #MapPromptMonday Sports. Didn’t feel too inspired by the theme but always a good reason to dig into some new #OpenStreetMap data.
Guess there are more gyms in the center as some people use them in their lunch breaks? Numbers are notably higher in Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster.

Or in this other example it's telling me to do a very bizarre long loop for a very short and simple walk. As you can see #OpenStreetMap has no problems with this route.

Very proud of my somewhat shy mum for talking to some locals in Kienitz, Brandenburg which led to her finding this genuine milk churn stand (a lot of the ones in Germany are new and only serve as memorials) in front of an abandoned house. #MilkChurnStand It's now on #wikimedia and #OpenStreetMap. 🤩

All I want as a web developer is to link to an address / lat±lng and for the users 🌎 map service of choice (#OpenStreetMap, #Apple maps, #GoogleMaps, whatever) to open without being dependant upon Google.
It's 2023 and even darling of the "free and open web", #Firefox doesn't support geo:// #indieweb
#OpenStreetMap https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/minutely-updated-vector-tiles/104197 is not getting as much attention as it should.
People have started talking about #OpenStreetMap versus #GoogleMaps again. I think I might want to update this 10-year old article about it

Someone made a game where you have to name every street in San Francisco. Cute. 🙂
(Of course it uses #OpenStreetMap data. All geo innovations need #OSM)
Programming stuff to work with #OpenStreetMap data also faces the problem that those pesky #OSMers keep mapping more things, and adding more and more data. 😂😭
Here in Russia I default to #YandexMaps, but it's entirely for proprietary reasons. I mean, look at just how closed off a lot of information here is! Transportation schedules are not an easy thing to come by, for some reason. Yandex's maps help me make routes I never thought of with data in their possession and even estimate the travel time.
I could only wish there was a way to transfer all this experience to #OSM #OpenStreetMap, but I see how quickly it would inflate the scope of project...

#OpenStreetMap 以前より大分使いやすくなってるな! :tony_happy:
I can highly recommend #OpenStreetMap by the way, I've been a heavy contributor to the map in the past but stopped because my main interest has changed.
I've spent considerable time with #JOSM, a powerful tool to edit the map.
But I am still in full support of the community map project idea and I want OSM to be used and normalized.
I don't understand why so many people still default to Google Maps or even Apple Maps.
#Google is trying again to convince you, YES YOU, to contribute for free to Google Maps.
Please don't.
It is 100% #proprietary, Google has full control over the data you added and people can only access Google Maps over proprietary channels where Google dictates the rules. This gives them too much power.
Contribute to #OpenStreetMap instead, it's a project by the community, for the community.

There's a new map style on OpenStreetMap.org! The Tracestrack Topo map from @tracestrack.
It's a mix of osm-carto and OpenTopoMap. It has many improvements: more tag support (busway, embankment, cuisine, solar plants, aquaculture, pitch, sea, tree etc.), CJK fonts, etc. There is
also better internationalisation: country specific road shields, peaks
using imperial system in the US, hierarchical place rendering in China, etc.

Are there any #OpenStreetMap routing APIs that allow me to query and get the distance between two postcodes by roads suitable for Heavy Goods Vehicles and avoiding tolls? I'm aware Google has one, but I'd like to support an open project if possible, especially if it has a paid API.
Example why open source funding is fucked up: Apple, Microsoft and Facebook all use #OpenStreetmap Data for their stuff. But they don’t donate enough money to keep it working. They rely on donations by us. Why?
TIL: the #OSM `waterway=fairway` tag: “a navigable route in a body of water such as a lake or sea”.
It's not a “way along which water flows”, but how you can go along water. Add that to another one of the “confusingly named waterways”. I found it when looking for long unnamed `waterways` in #OpenStreetMap
OSM Tag: <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:waterway=fairway>

Follow @kidsan@hachyderm.io, because he's an all-around good dude I met last week in #Darmstadt at #NixCon2023. He recently moved instances and lost a bunch of followers, so follow him if you're interested in the tech stuff he boosts ❄️
Follow @emily@hackaday.social for awesome #RetroComputing stuff and if you're into #Electronics. She's a self-described geek and her interesting posts reflects that 💡
Follow @leighelse@mastodon.nz, because she seems to be a very kind person who lives an interesting life. Also, she boosts various interesting stuff ☺️

Just be aware that using #OSM / #OpenStreetMap instead of #Google #Maps, doesn't necessarily mean using openstreetmap.org There are many great mapping services built using OSM data, which may suit your needs better. For example #OrganicMaps ( @organicmaps ) is a fabulous #FOSS #Android app that uses OSM data to give a #GoogleMaps like experience on mobile (including #LinuxMobile !)

some years ago I saw an achademic paper arguing that from a couple of simple indices you can draw a pretty effective estimation of energy costs of a piece of real estate property
and the simple data were
1) the position on the map (and exposition to the sun, ect)
2) the material the building is made of
3) the number of dwelling units the building contains
I'd love to find that paper again, as it may be useful/fun to map some of these data in the place where I live
