A soft blue sky with billowing white clouds. The ocean below is several shades darker, perhaps a cornflower blue. Long swells are breaking against the shore, creating a wide band of froth. We are standing atop a seacliff a couple hundred feet above a large bay, looking out over the top of a thicket of leafy green shrubs with long clusters of purple blossoms. On the far side of the bay a rugged green mountain rises from the edge of the bay hundreds of feet to its wooded summit.

We are walking through an area of sand dunes along the Pacific coast of Oregon. The sun is shining, although more rain clouds are visible well offshore. We can just see a small strip of the blue ocean along the horizon, frothy waves breaking on the coast. The dunes are tall, made up of slightly pinkish beige sand. There are clumps of grasses Growing along and around the bases of the dunes in many places. A rather large tidal pool lies in front of us to our right between the dunes.

Port Orford, Oregon, looking south towards Humbug Mountain. A gem of a park and a fantastic place for a park bench on the Pacific Coast Highway near the Oregon - California border. March 1984. I wish I packed a lunch.

A green meadow sprinkled with small white flowers on a slight rise along the Pacific coast of Oregon. The sky is a soft blue with many billowing clouds. A beautiful blue bay with many majestic craggy sea stacks. Impressive waves are crashing against those rocks and the beach of dark beige sand. A sea cliff of varying height borders the beach, backed by a series of rugged wooded ridges. A mountain rises behind them, its top brushed by the clouds. At the far end of the bay, the sea cliff rises to a lofty mountain right against the shore.

Dune, grass, blue sky and clouds. A rainy day turns fine at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, March 1984. Signage at the Wallowa-Whitman Mission has been updated to include #Indigenous perspectives about Whitman. NPS Director Chuck Sams (who's Cayuse and Walla Walla) described it to me as "one of the best examples I’ve seen in my own lifetime" of public signage adjusting for honesty about colonial violence.

But the signage at Deadman's Pass in #Oregon continues to erase Indigenous people and perpetuate settler mythologies.

(More from my conversation with Director Sams: https://www.hcn.org/issues/54.11/indigenous-affairs-national-park-service-from-dominance-to-stewardship-chuck-sams-indigenous-approach-to-the-nps)

Signage at Deadman's Pass does mention Marcus Whitman, a missionary high on Manifest Destiny who got his ass handed to him by the Cayuse.

Whitewashed and demonizing accounts of #Indigenous heroes protecting their lands and people inspired even more colonizers to descend upon Cayuse lands and persecute the people with religious oppression.

Cayuse and Nez Perce linguistic anthropologist Phillip Cash Cash once told me about a place in #Oregon called Deadman's Pass, where settler-colonizers murdered an #Indigenous family gathering food. Even today, public historical signage at Deadman's Pass gives a pleasant view of settlers, calling them "emigrants" and lionizing their efforts at colonization. The signage makes no mention of #Indigenous people.

"One morning, I woke up to my dad’s panicked voice yelling, 'Get up, get up, get up!' He threw my bed aside, and he and my mom threw gunnysacks full of fish into the hole, along with a net covered in fish scales. He quickly changed and scrubbed off what mud he could, tossing his scaly clothing down with the fish.

"Soon the state game wardens came knocking at our door..."

Walking through the rain towards the ocean. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, March 1984.

As the rain clouds begin to break up a bit we are walking a trail through light rain towards the nearby ocean. We are crossing a very broad swathe of sand dunes along the Oregon coast. Some of the dunes are covered with groves of evergreens, others tall golden grasses, and many are just barren sand dunes.

I saw her perform this live at Beall Hall on University of #Oregon campus (she was incredible), and prior night attended a talk with Glass at the Hult Center's Soreng Theatre. His work is very easy to love, might be the combination of melodic repition and easy to follow scores.

Even when living directly in the middle of an Old Growth Doug Fir forest (yea!) in #Oregon, this allergy year has been one of the best ever.

Until yesterday, when the Cottonwoods started spewing their cotton balls of seed/pollen. Looks like light snow falling. My ass has been kicked for 48 hours now. Made it up to the viewpoint on Larch Mountain for this first time this year. The ascent was just over 4000 feet if elevation over 7 miles and 3 hours. While the snow cooperated, the clouds unfortunately did not. I saw the tip of Mount Hood poking out of the clouds and could barely make out St Helens in the distance. The rest were hiding. The snow has mostly melted with some snow fields above 3500 feet.
