A year from now, #MickeyMouse will enter #PublicDomain as 1928's Steamboat Willie crosses the #Copyright Rubicon. Can't wait that long for #RoyaltyFree #Disney? You're in luck! Walt Disney's first big hit, #Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, is public domain now.
In 1927, #WaltDisney was a man with a dream. A dream about a rabbit with a trolley. He took this dream and sold it to Universal as Oswald's debut, Trolley Trouble.
Trolley Trouble was a huge hit. Disney produced 26 Oswald shorts by mid-1928. Buoyed by his wins, Walt rode the rails from LA to New York to ask his boss Charles Mintz for a raise.
Instead, he found Mintz plotting to make Oswald shorts without him. Rather than a raise, Universal wanted to give Disney a pay cut and make Mintz the new head of Disney's LA studio.
Disney threw an epic #RageQuit and took the train back to LA, but he couldn't take the Lucky Rabbit with him - Universal owned Oswald's copyright. Embittered, Disney vowed to own everything he created until the day he died, plus 70 years.
The poster child for the revolution is here. #Oswald, the titular #rabbit character of the 1927 cartoon "Trolley Troubles" is now in the #publicDomain and I drew this to celebrate. Oswald believes in sensible #copyright #legislation, but uses the cry of "Destroy All Copyrights" to draw attention to his cause.
Note that Oswald here is based on the 1927 #cartoon and does not infringe on any currently existing trademarks held by any existing corporations.
Had a blast interacting with Ryan Grim at The Intercept and am extremely grateful that he took me seriously and decided to write up some of my research into the recently released #JFK docs.
TLDR; A CIA employee claimed the agency hired #Oswald at #Atsugi, a military base where Oswald was stationed in the late 1950s that was also a site of #LSD experiments. Later CIA employees cast doubt on this claim. There is so much more to this of course...

Following hashtags is so finicky. I've got to tweet the hashtag I want to use and then select it from my own tweet. If I try to search for what I want to follow, Toot-Mammoth gives me something other than what I was looking for, and thinks it is being helpful.
