So does anyone else kinda not like #Duolingo? Like, it’s a nice and easy way to begin #learning a #language and it seems a lot of my friends also use it, the problem is instead of getting real people to do the voices they use text-to speech, which means you often do not get the correct #pronunciation. Like, often you get both a normal speed and a slow speed recordings of the pronunciation to pick from, and the two versions will often use completely different #TTS voices that not only have diffent quality, but also very different #pronunciations despite being the same words or sentences. It seems like the wrong way to learn a language. Also, what is up with the #owl? @actuallyautistic

1/ Felt a little under the weather the last couple of days, so this morning before getting up I was briefly thinking/ #meditating on Earth Power/ #LifeForce / #GreatMother/ #BirdGoddess (all the same thing, more or less)- as a calming /focussing /affirming/ #balancing practise. In the middle of that I had a momentary #vision of an #owl flying away. So after rising I did a little searching on owl symbolism, particularly in the #Baltic #pagan tradition. #Latvian #mystic

In 2016, I was sitting in my livingroom when something slammed against the patio door. I ran over and saw this little guy lying on his back with his legs in the air. I thought he'd broken his neck. A flock of crows roosted on the patio railings. I went outside, and the crows didn't fly away. They made little placating sounds at me, like, "Hey, that's ours. Just leave it there and we'll be cool, ok?"

But I bundled up the little owl, and the crows freaked the fuck out. They started cawing in earnest and hopping up and down. I brought the owl inside, who still was not moving. He was knocked out. Then he burst into consciousness and started flying all around the house. I managed to catch him, bundle him up, and put him in the bathroom. He kept shrieking at me to scare me off, and I guess it worked, although his cries were cuter than they were scary. I left him in there with the lights out while I called a wildlife rehab centre. He pooped all over my bathroom mirror.

They came and picked him up. I'm glad to say he made a full recovery. #owl #SawWhetOwl #bird #birds #wildlife #WildlifeWednesday

I guess the parents eat it. Or it cannot climb down tree? Kinda hard to see why not. So, parents are smart enough to eat it when the kids are gone.

Over the past year a Cape eagle-owl has become a regular visitor to our garden, softly hooting in the evenings and early hours. Occasionally another owl will join. The owl regularly sits in the tree a few meters outside the window beside my wife's workstation.

For her birthday, the kids and I surprised her with this lovely owl box that we'll install in the owls' favourite tree. Hopefully we can attract a breeding pair over the next year.

We think the owls enjoy the garden snacks – the trees attract plenty of smaller birds, and we know the soil hosts several shrew families. The pond also has fewer frogs than in the past...
