#PHPledge
Shout out to the team at @FOSSBackstage for their #HealthAndSafety policy!
We hope that they add masking to their policy, but the bottom line for now is that they have a policy and they've committed to not weakening it between now and the event.
That is head and shoulders above the status quo of events that act like it's still 2019.

@phpledge @josh One last thing.
Will @fsf / @fsfe commit to having a #PublicHealth policy at their meet ups celebrating #gnu40?
Will any of the attendees who are speaking at these events commit to the #PHPledge?
It's only a few weeks away, but I did ask back in July, with no response.
Or does fighting for rights only apply to code and hardware?
@phpledge @josh We need leadership and leaders who do what John Scalzi and others did.
We need those leaders to take a stand and refuse to attend conferences without a rigorous #PublicHealth policy.
We need those leaders to sign the #PHPledge.
We need them to be brave enough to stand for everyone in their communities. Not just stand for those they can meet in person during a conference.
We need leaders, panelists and keynote invitees to politely decline if no policy is in place.
I want our flagship #FOSS organisations and their executive directors to look beyond their careers and their opportunities and to consider the larger communities they are leaving behind and actively excluding.
Perhaps I'm naive. I always thought choosing FOSS showed a more communal way of thinking.
We managed to encourage codes of conduct to ensure conference safety for vulnerable individuals.
Let's improve on that so that our conferences are open to everyone.
One of the points @phpledge and @josh makes is that you can ask for safer conferences to attend. We've done it before by pushing for conferences to have COCs with anti harrassment policies.
We need our community leaders to push for rigorous public health policies as #CovidIsStillHere
In 2013 @scalzi decided to take a stand on COCs by announcing he wouldn't be the guest of honor, or a panel participant unless the conference had an anti harrassment policy.
https://whatever.scalzi.com/2013/07/02/my-new-convention-harassment-policy/
We may be biased, as the pledge author is a co-organizer of the event, but we think the @northbaypython #HealthAndSafety policy is pretty great.
Two other events have already adapted the policy for themselves. Maybe it can be useful for you too!
Take a look at a model policy: https://2023.northbaypython.org/health-and-safety-policy
We've been a little quiet here, but our work is far from done!
Public Health Pledge author @josh will be presenting about event Health and Safety policies next month in Portland, Oregon.
We're building a community of practice, creating model policies, and notching a few wins.
As the puzzle pieces come together, we can make a renewed push advocating for change -- with the necessary tools ready for people to adopt.
What an honor! I'm thrilled to share that I'm a speaker at the first ever #FOSSY by @conservancy this July in Portland.
I'll be talking about event #HealthAndSafety policies and what the pandemic can teach us about taking our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to the next level. (Feat. the @phpledge!)
I can't wait to see the full lineup for the conference :ablobcatrave:

@luckytran To prevent this in the future, CDC should join #PHPledge https://publichealthpledge.com/
We congratulate @northbaypython on making #NBPy 2023 the second #PHPledge badged event 👏
The team is doing admirable work to creatively reimagine their event in the pandemic era.

We're delighted to have received two badging applications from events this week! 🥳
The Public Health Pledge event badge helps both participants and organizers:
- participants can quickly parse the Health and Safety policy
- organizers get clear targets to aim for
Event badging is a free service our volunteer team offers. In the process, we review policies and offer suggestions that help organizers do even better within their constraints.

COVID remains a going concern, with millions of excess deaths globally and millions more having been disabled, including many who are no longer able to work.
Against this backdrop we ask:
Do we take the simple steps to protect each other and our communities, or hitch a ride to wishful thinking?
The 164 (and counting) signatories to #PHPledge all agree:
We can do better than wishful thinking.
Join us, take a stand for safer and more inclusive events: https://publichealthpledge.com
Our team has been a bit preoccupied navigating industry headwinds but the work continues.
We are currently advising several events on #HealthAndSafety policies and will be gearing up for a big push in Q3. We started this initiative knowing it would be a long haul. This is a year of establishing footholds and creating good examples for folks to follow.
Thank you for your solidarity.
Together we will make events safer and more inclusive!
Definitely stealing parts of the @auc COVID safety policy for @northbaypython's policy. Well-defined language, identifying commitments made by the organisers, and requirements and expectations of attendees.

Hello from the #PHPledge team! It's 2023 week 12, and the work continues apace.
➡️ We are about to reach out to event organizer signatories to invite them to our badging program.
➡️ We have enough feedback on our v2023-01 badge standard to begin work on the next version.
➡️ New signatories continue to stand up in solidarity!
Keep sharing your concerns about #HealthAndSafety with organizers, and point them our way.
Together we'll make events safer and more inclusive 🤝
It's a great day! :party_sparkles:
Today the Public Health and Safety metric in the @chaoss event DEI badging initiative reached release candidate status. We're proud to have reached this milestone alongside Event Location Inclusivity, a timeline consideration.
As an established badging program, this will extend the reach of our work to raise the bar in event organizing 🚀

We have been taking steps to ensure that the #OpenInfraSummit Vancouver 2023 is a safe and inclusive environment by being the first event to take the Public Health Pledge!
Onsite Safety Precautions: https://openinfra.dev/summit/vancouver-2023/summit-onsite-safety/
Badge Standard: https://publichealthpledge.com/badging
The Public Health Pledge event badge distills a wide range of policies and practices into a set of grades. This helps attendees quickly assess an event against their own risk profile, and determine how to navigate that risk for themselves 😷
Another benefit:
Dialog with folks who've been working with many organizers on #HealthAndSafety! We can help you navigate sticky challenges and find opportunities to improve.
Apply for your event today ➡️ https://publichealthpledge.com/badging
We congratulate @OpenInfra on making #OpenInfraSummit Vancouver 2023 the first ever #PHPledge badged event 👏
The #OpenInfra team earned top marks in four of the five measures of our v2023-01 standard:

➡️ Vaccines: Robust Policy
➡️ Tests: Efforts Made

Hello from the #PHPledge team! It's 2023 week 9, and the work continues apace.
➡️ We're beginning to onboard more volunteers.
➡️ We just completed our first event badge review. More on that tomorrow!
➡️ Work on the @chaoss Public Health and Safety metric is complete, and is closer to being rolled out.
Thank you all for taking a stand.
Together we'll make events safer and more inclusive!
We're excited about our collaboration with @chaoss!
Their DEI event badging initiative has evaluated over 100 open source tech conferences since its launch in 2020. It's an evolving standard, and soon this evaluation will expand to include an assessment of event Public Health and Safety measures.
If you're organizing an event in open source, we encourage you to learn about the initiative and apply!

"Help! I signed the #PHPledge and didn't realize an event I planned to attend is in violation. What do I do?!"
Don't fret! Reach out to us.
We can help you navigate a tricky situation with integrity. There are creative ways to both connect with your community and be a shining example of what's possible.
Of course, none of that involves attending the violating event. Taking the pledge involves hard choices, and we appreciate your solidarity 🤝
Are you organizing an event? Do you want to signal to attendees that you care about their health?
Apply to our event badging process: https://publichealthpledge.com/badging 🏅
Our team reviews applications weekly, can help you spot opportunities for improvement, and will issue a badge you can use to help participants quickly assess and navigate risks for themselves.
And, given current climate, a #PHPledge badge will help your event stand out.
Hello, from the #PHPledge team! We deferred our weekly Monday meeting to soak up the US federal holiday.
But the wheels keep turning:
➡️ We're kicking the tires on our event badging process
➡️ Preparing to proactively recruit events to that badging process
➡️ Efforts to incorporate our work into @chaoss events DEI event badging continue apace
➡️ The first COVID-conscious fringe events we're aware of are coming together
We're very excited to hear rumblings of people organizing COVID conscious "fringe" events around big events that fail to deliver on health and safety.
This is just one of many ways we can come together and build a new consensus for safer and more inclusive events.
Some highlights from this week's #PHPledge team meeting:
➡️ Establishing how we run our event badging and review process
➡️ Preparing to incorporate feedback into the next version of the badging standard
➡️ Reviewing our first event badging submission
➡️ Building out volunteer on-ramps and infrastructure before a round of onboarding
We're all volunteers but week by week the wheels keep turning!
We're starting the week in celebration!
There are 150 individual signatories to the #PHPledge, including researchers, physicians, educators, engineers, organizers, artists, and more 🥳 They all have made a commitment to safer and more inclusive events.
Meanwhile, we're putting our new event badging process through its paces, and aligning with likeminded efforts at @chaoss.

Busy week for the #PHPledge team!
We're gearing up to onboard more volunteers and launch the process to put the event badging standard to work, collaborating with the @chaoss DEI working group to extend our reach, and in conversation with event organizers to support their work on Healthy and Safety. Oh, and updating our signatory list!
Thank you all for your support and commitment to raising the bar.

@anildash @danhon @Meyerweb I have a theory; there is no mention AT ALL in the post about public health questions and whether the content-seekers feel that conferences are doing enough to make it safe for them (because they likely have a different calculus and risk model from the networkers). nothing about the #PHPledge or masks or even code of conduct safety, or how that plays into the community that an event grows from...
