One of the ways in which I would like to minimize disk usage is using #JpegXL instead of #PNG (or even #JPEG, but I'm not hosting JPEG images), which I cannot do as long as #Firefox doesn't enable JPEG‌ XL‌ support in the mainline edition of its browser (no, I don't care that #Google has decided to boycott it in #Chrome, just like I haven't cared about their lack of #MathML support and proper #SVG animation support for years).

Been spending the afternoon optimizing World of Warcraft Datamining automation for https://wyrimaps.net/wow. Got to the rather exciting point where I only have to extra the resources I need from the game and scanners will pick up any new work and miners will then do that work. On my part, what I've started doing has been to start serving it as the preferred format for the (very few) self-hosted images on my website, and I'm pleased to announce that I *am* getting hits for the #JXL version of the images instead of the #PNG version from #Apple: I knew that #SafariBrowser had introduced support for #JpegXL this summer, and I can now confirm that it seems to be working (so, #Mozilla, how about switching that flag to the main branch?)

It's a great way to save some space on your computer but also on your beloved #fediverse instance (storage aint free after all) !

I've started playing around with #JPEGXL for reasons <https://sociale.network/@oblomov/109806549839076180> and it's honestly an amazing format. Excellent for archival with lossless compression, transparency, animation, perceptually optimal lossy compression. It could replace all existing web image formats (#JPEG, #GIF, #PNG, #WebP, you name it) tomorrow.
So the question is: why did #Google withdraw its support for it, after contributing heavily to it on the first place?

Logging is threatening the Torricelli Mountains, a biodiversity-rich forested range in Papua New Guinea known for its tree kangaroos and other threatened species of birds and mammals.

The Tenkile Conservation Alliance, a Papua New Guinean NGO, has led an effort to protect the area, but the government has yet to officially designate what would be the Torricelli Mountain Range Conservation Area.

À chaque fois qu'on poste une image, on met une description alternative. C'est bien !

Si on poste plusieurs fois la même image, ou si on l'emprunte quelque part pour la reporter, on doit copier coller le alt en plus de l'image.

Pourtant les images ont des méta-données. Est-ce qu'il existe pour chaque format (png, jpg) un champ méta-données prévu pour le alt (idéalement pour chaque langue) qui pourrait être utilisé par Mastodon pour pré remplir le alt?

Me: The creator of #GIF said it should be pronounced “JIF” so obviously that’s the correct pronunciation.

Also me: The creator of #PNG suggested that it be pronounced “ping” but I’m not doing that and neither should you.

I am curious why doesn't #Whatsapp Web doesn't allow sharing of #png or #jpeg files

@stux In all honesty, .webp is a great invention in its own right.
If you just objectively look at things like compression, filesize, features (transparency) etc. it's just a great blend of other things.
#PNG s have transparently but they take up a huge amount of space whereas #JPG s can't handle transparency and their quality can deteriorate easily (depending on the settings, of course).
I'd just wish for a greater adoption of support for #WEBP since it's been around for like 12 years now...

It's amazing how many awful versions there are out there of the #Nakatomi logo. I found a #PNG that was really close and used that for a template to make an #SVG of it. Yes, I hand made the SVG to make sure all the things were correct as possible. The #font seems to be different all over the place from what I have seen in the screen captures though.
