Good afternoon, Fedinauts!

A new week; some cool new Photo Sharkives shares.

Mid-90s Akihabara, Japan.
A wonderland of rapidly changing video game consoles and console generations. And young Danny Choo (now quite a well-known travel blogger and founder of Mirai Inc) on his first visits to Japan gave us a photographic glimpse into this changing landscape that would have felt like a futuristic paradise to teen me!

I was especially happy to see the wall of PlayStation as that's my favourite 90s console and the one I've been most passionate about collecting over the years.

A dose of mid-90s anime cuteness for your Fediverse feeds - and the third ever PlayStation game to be released alongside the Japanese launch of the console on December 3rd 1994.

Crime Crackers is a pretty nifty little sci-fi dungeon crawler FPS with lite-RPG elements. Think Slayers in Space or Lost Universe, which actually was Slayers in Space. Catgirls with a cute peeking fang are also included in abundance!

Sadly, there's still no fan translation, but you could largely muddle through it as the gameplay is rather simple and maze-based. I used Retroarch's screen translation tools for our playthrough of it and it worked pretty well.

One for fans of early PS1 games from Japan like myself!

👾 Here's a couple of great retro titles for the PlayStation 1. Driver 2 and Sim City 2000.
The Driver series was my first true open-world driving simulator games & it blew my mind spending entire summer vacations playing them.
Sim City 2000 was another game I would play for hours at a time. I drove my parents crazy (they found it boring), but I played it for years and it never got old. Will Wright (creator of Sim City/Sims) & team are great folks, I cannot wait to see what the next fancy new thing is they are working on now! 😉😉😉

Thinking about the time I went 'Wow, #FF7 on #NintendoSwitch!' around the time of the remake and bought it without looking.

Picked up Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 at a thrift store a while back, but still have not tried it. Any thoughts on this game? @sleepybisexual 3DS is pretty challenging; you'll want a touch screen for some games. #Switch basically requires #Steamdeck or better. There are some Android based handhelds that are handing #Gamecube/#Wii now, but not Switch yet.

I have an #anbernic #RG35xx which has been worth every penny. It can handle #PS1, but not #N64 or #Saturn. It's based on #Linux.

I'm thinking about getting a #RG405v which can handle #Dreamcast and #Gamecube. It also has a touch screen. It runs #Android.

Although the gaming press lambasted Motley for his derivative early-aughts 'tude, poor controls, and...odd creative choices (that ESRB rating is no joke, let's just leave it at that), his debut title is still considered a cult classic to....er...someone, out there, I guess.

Beat Diablo as a level 25 rogue today on 9/7/2023 - 30 days after starting it. (After the quick cinematic at the end, it takes you back to this intro screen).

Here was my whole setup, guide book and all.

My living room TV with the Diablo loading screen on it, plus my PS1 mini and controller with Diablo guide book on front of it, and random Halloween decorations (and my Series X) on the table next to them.

Killed Lazarus, and I'm at the end - exactly 30 days after starting my run as Alathra the rogue! I like to take it fairly slow, and I have. Now for the big demon himself. I suspect I won't have too much trouble - Lazarus is usually tougher and he was pretty much a breeze. Rogue arrows ftw! Find or buy a good bow!

Down in level 13 (and Alathra is now level 20). Was thankfully able to skip a lot of level 11, as those damn demons there kept surrounding me and killing me- but the succubi and other demons aren't too bad now since I found this BADASS bow that adds 101% damage. Almost breezing through level 13. Only a couple more to go!

Breep-Breep! CODEC call coming in as it's the 25th anniversary of the Japanese release of the seminal METAL GEAR SOLID on PlayStation.

It's hard to understate just how landmark a title this is. It's everything that the stampede to FMV games on Mega CD and 3DO tried to do in terms of being a cinematic game - but with amazing gameplay. You didn't need live-action to be 'realistic' and 'cinematic' - Metal Gear Solid truly showed where the emphasis should be placed.

It's still an awesome game to play today and if you don't have a PS1 and a copy to hand, it's worth emulating that version with a memory card file full of saves just for a certain scene!

If you have any MGS memories you'd like to share, let's hear them! When did you first play it and did you import it from Japan or the US if you're in PAL?

Finally making some damn progress on level 9 in Diablo with my rogue run.

A big key for the rogue here is firing arrows toward where you know the monsters are (once you've died from them enough times to learn, ffs) to taunt them to come over near one of these wood enclosures with the door.

Then, you run inside, close the door, and fire out, chugging health potions. It works. They run over fast and want to surround you. My rogue Alathra is level 18 now, and pretty tough (Arkaines Valor etc) but if the monsters surround you on floor 9, they'll just kill you over and over. You can't even chug potions fast enough.

So I fully filled my inventory with health potions, had a town portal ready to go, kept saving every time I killed a few more, and I think I'm finally getting somewhere now.

I mean, I kept dying here a LOT. Was even trying Stone Curse, melee weapons, anything. It was brutal. Maybe now I can progress some more.

Is anyone going to be playing Armored Core VI today?

Being deep into Baldurs Gate 3 and then Starfield soon means it's going to be a future play for me, but I've appreciated the series ever since Armored Core 2 on PS2.

I picked up the very first Armored Core for PS1 a few years back and it was pretty neat stuff to see where it all began - wobbly mecha polygons and all.

Still working my way back down to floor 9, gradually, just hangin out a little, grabbing up good gear. Got a better bow.

Every time I come back to town to sell stuff, I feel Griswold eyeing my badass backup axe, the unique and indestructible Wicked Axe, (that I'm keeping to thrash those jerks up close that instantly surround you on floor 9).

Not gonna happen, man. 🤣

Well, I kept hitting a wall at floor 9 in my PS1 mini Diablo run, so I just saved my character and restarted the whole game to respawn monsters. Had to sell my extra stuff and they took the special stuff (Arkaines Valor, etc) but I bought a new helmet and armor and now maybe I can get a little bump before trying floor 9 again. Argh!

Alathra's now level 16 and I'm starting in on floor 9, which is of course where that difficulty ramps up! However, I just went back to kill the Butcher and now I'm gonna take out Leoric. The Butcher was SO easy to take out with a level 16 rogue 🤣 I figure Leoric will be too. Diablo tip - wait to kill these two til later, when you're stronger! 🔥

Update - I played a little bit yesterday and today, my rogue Alathra is now level 5. Cleared out floors 1 and 2 except for the butcher, trying to get a little more experience down on floor 3 here etc before I tackle him.

It's SO much fun (I always have to speed it up though, the regular walk is so slow -- there's a tip for ya, as long as you can deal with slightly faster monsters. It's a game changer for me).

It's just a thrill every time I play this game. I always forget how much I love its AMAZING soundtrack and sound effects. I remember first seeing it at my friends house when it first came out, and I've been hooked ever since.

Moved the hacked PS1 mini (it has like 80+ games on it now thanks to Autobleem, the most important of them being Diablo) to the living room to start up a new Diablo run. I beat it two years ago in September and I started my run(s) in August 2021. Something about August and fall, I guess. Last time, I tried a sorcerer but struggled til I switched to fighter, which I beat it with. This time, I'm trying a rogue. Never tried rogue before. Should be wild. Time for tons of saving and leaving all my gear on the ground in town! 🤣

To prepare for the new show, I played #TwistedMetal 1 and 2 for the first time since I was a kid. It was alright.

First game had the more memorable characters, and second had much better controls and maps. I played as the dude on the cover with the giant wheels - it was a trip. The physics on the car were impressive #PS1 #PlayStation #gaming

It’s the 25th anniversary of Brave Fencer Musashi this month. It’s one of the lesser known action RPG games from the #PS1 era that was made by Squaresoft.

It’s been cool going back and playing it today. It’s fully voice acted by big names. And many of the gameplay elements were groundbreaking for the time — from Crash Bandicoot style running towards camera boulder chase levels - to platforming on rotating platforms aka Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy. It’s astounding how much they packed in.

Decided to fire up my #PS1 version of #DragonQuest 7 - back when it was still #DragonWarrior here! - and whoof! Like, the game had some dodgy graphics even in its era, but time has not been kind to it in the slightest.

@timixretroplays your banner image reminded me I still have an old #PS1 style #gravis GamePad Pro! The little screw hole in the middle of the d-pad for the joystick was clutch!

Just hooked the #RG35XX up to my TV with an HDMI cable and it just worked!

USB controller too; though charging won't pass through my hub.

Pretty impressed with #garlicOS! #RetroArch is clunky and ugly but once you get the hang of the wordy menus it's not so bad.

#PS1 games look great once you get them scaling properly.

I think me and this #RG35XX are gonna experience most of the #Playstation library for the first time together.

I was a #Sega fanboy, so I sort of refused to care about anything that was a PS exclusive, but there seems to be some really good stuff from the #16bit era that got even better on #PS1.

#finalFantasyTactics looks kinda awesome, and #castlevania symphony of the night looks like it could be the best version of that game!
