"Global response of landfalling extreme ARs to #anthropogenic warming
"ARs can induce extreme precipitation when making landfall, especially in high topography areas. Figure 4 shows the landfalling EAR response to global warming in the North Pacific (NP), North Atlantic (NA), and South Pacific (SP) in HR CESM (the number of EARs landfalling along the east coast of the South Atlantic is small and is not shown here). Consistent with the overall EAR changes, future landfalling EARs are also significantly enhanced with an even stronger amplification (Fig. 4a–f). Compared to HR-HIS, the accumulated IVT and precipitation associated with landfalling EARs in HR-RCP are generally increased by a factor of two in 2050–2100 (Fig. 4a–i). Also, it is evident that the landfalling EARs induced precipitation relies heavily on topographical lifting, and the precipitation enhancement in these areas can reach as high as 200–300% (Fig. 4g–i). The results suggest a higher amplification rate of landfalling EARs (~threefolds) than global EARs (~twofolds) in a future warming climate and it is these landfalling EARs that will cause severe hydrological hazards and directly impact the coastal regions."

"It will be a wet and snowy start to December across the Northwest as the region remains the focal point for a series of storms featuring a month's worth of rain and feet of mountain snow.
"A flow of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, known as an atmospheric river, will send a nearly continuous barrage of storms into the Northwest into the first week of December, increasing the risk of flooding in the lower elevations while snow could clog mountain passes, leading to travel disruptions throughout the region.
"The train of storms will continue to spread rain across western Oregon and Washington into northwestern California through much of the new week. Cities across the region including Portland and Eugene, Oregon, and Seattle can record multiple inches of rain through Tuesday. Rainfall totals will be the highest along the coast and in the coastal mountain ranges where upwards of a foot of rain can occur in some areas. "

During an afternoon trip to #Edmonds, #Washington in the great #PacificNorthwest, I saw a public #art installation that I thought was pretty neat! The #salmon are windmills with bells that tinkle when the #wind blows strongly enough (which it did not, because it was a beautiful, mild #autumn day).
The ferry in the background is the #KingstonFerry. There were people #fishing off the dock, catching flounder, salmon, and perch. Others had their #crab pots down, and one guy caught some #shrimp!

I keep seeing social media posts telling us not to rake up our leaves and to let them rot in place.
I live in the wet, rainy Pacific Northwest. Over the years I have dealt with many fungal diseases that can affect the leaves of plants, trees, and shrubs.
Do not leave these leaves. Fungus can easily survive on fallen leaves. Garden sanitation (i.e. raking up the leaves) is an important tool in disease management.
Remove and destroy leaves afflicted with fungus to help prevent future infections and disease outbreaks.
Don't move to Portland, it's terrible here

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — "Federal regulators on Thursday approved the expansion of a natural gas pipeline in the Pacific Northwest over the protest of environmental groups and top officials in West Coast states, who said it goes against the region’s plans to address #ClimateChange and could pose a #wildfire risk.
"The project, known as GTN Xpress, aims to expand the capacity of the Gas Transmission Northwest pipeline, which runs through Idaho, Washington and Oregon, by about 150 million cubic feet (4.2 million cubic meters) of natural gas per day. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave it the green light in a vote on Thursday.
"#TCEnergy plans to modify three compressor stations along the pipeline — in #KootenaiCounty, #Idaho; #WallaWalla County, #Washington; and #ShermanCounty, #Oregon. Compressor stations help maintain the pressure and flow of gas over long distances in a pipeline.

After you pull the dried flower fluff off, there is a small cone that is a pile of seeds packed together standing on end. Sometimes over a hundred seeds are in that cone. Hand cleaning is well worth the effort.
