When small animals or plants get stuck in gooey #TreeResin, they can be #preserved if resin hardens into #amber. “In #Lebanon, I have found some 450 different outcrops of amber, which is a lot for a small country,” said Dany Azar, #paleontologist at the #NanjingInstitute of #Geology & #Palaeontology & #LebaneseUniversity, and an author of the paper.

#Palaeontology: Bird tracks from the Cretaceous period discovered in the southern hemisphere 🦐

Modern avifauna has its roots in a side branch of the dinosaur family tree, a fact that most palaeontologists have no doubt about. Their closest living relatives are the crocodiles, and it is thought that their direct ancestors were probably arboreal, small predatory dinosaurs from the Maniraptora group.

A brown rock, with a lighter fossil insect in it. The fossil has a head with antennae (left), then a pronotum (~shiled shape plate), and then long wings with prominent veins. For the last #FossilFriday of #arachtober, meet a Phalangiotarbid arachnid. Phalangiotarbids are members of an extinct arachnid order - a fossil in siderite of one is shown left, and a CT scan and 3D reconstruction of that shown right. This fossil is around ~315 million years old. Members of this order aren't found in rocks younger than ~280 million years old - so the group went extinct at some point after this.

#science #nature #palaeontology

A photo of a fossil arachnid, which is kinda grey, and the animal is an inprint in the nodule - it has a big plate at the front and back in a picture of the dorsal surface, shown on the left, and on the right we see the underside, which has clear, spaced segmentation. Caption: Holotype and only known specimen of phalangiotarbid Goniotarbus angulatus (NHM In 22838). (A) Dorsal view, showing prosoma and opisthosoma, and legs 4L and 2L. Proximal portions of Leg 1L are visible at the anterior of the fossil, as are the trochanters of several of the legs on the right. (B) Ventral view showing coxo-sternal arrangement and ventral opisthosomal segmentation. Proximal portions of Leg 1L, then 2L 3L and 4L are visible. Scale bars: (A, B) = 2 mm.
A CT scan of the fossil shown in the other image - this includes close ups of two limbs, top left and right, in light and drak puple, its ventral anterior, top middle, and then a dorsal and ventral view of the fossil, bottom. Butied in the rocks are its legs - coloured in purple here on the 3D model revealed by the CT scan.

I think the remarkable thing that #archaeology has given me, is that fleeting moments we take for granted in any moment can become so profound and awe inspiring, that reality takes on whole new perceptions. A footprint, a cave painting, a bone or strands of preserved hair, man made tools, jewellery or a cooking pot can be found thousands of years apart. Telling their own story of life as it was. Sharing an intimate moment of another life and time long gone. #Palaeontology just blows my mind!

Personally, I think this story is a load of old bollocks.

"A 50-million-year-old #Insect #Testicle is one lucky find

"Soft tissues rarely last this long—even as #Fossils...

"...'That can only be a testis and accessory glands that are associated with the testis,' [Palaeoentomologist Sam] Heads said. 'That’s just phenomenal. I was not expecting to see that kind of structure preserved in a rock compression. I’ve never seen that before...'”

Given I'm working on a paper on this little critter today, for #FossilFriday, let me introduce Arthropleura. This genus is famous for large (~2.5m long examples), but it's actually the smaller ones - such as this 305 million year old example from france - that are better preserved. Isn't it cute?

#Science #fossils #palaeontology #paleontology

A fossil arthropod in black and white - it's about 3 cm long and we're looking down on it from above. The body is split into three longitudinal regions. It has a head to the right and tapered tail to the left. It looks a bit like a modern millipede in terms of the number of segments and general form

If you're in the UK, The Rise and Reign of the Mammals has just been published in paperback!

https://inquisitivebiologist.com/2022/06/24/book-review-the-rise-and-reign-of-the-mammals-a-new-history-from-the-shadow-of-the-dinosaurs-to-us/

Epic in scope and majestic in execution, it thoroughly convinces that the evolutionary history of mammals is just as fascinating as that of the dinosaurs.

🍂 🍃 Happy #Minnasota #fossilfriday. One of the strangest #leaffossil specimens I have seen yet. This #cretaceous leaf fossil was found by a friend of mine inside a large misshapen iron-rich nodule. Found on a sandstone outcropping in Southern Minnesota. 🍁

This is not the first amphipod discovered in amber. It is not even the first species of amphipod in amber from Chiapas, Mexico. But it is an instance for pause about previous interpretations. Previous workers suggested scenarios like floods to 'wash' amphiopods and other crustaceans into trees with sticky resin, or blown in by the wind. #amber #palaeontology #paleontology #paleocology

Introduction

I am a lover of #palaeontology (but I'm not professional or even formally educated) particularly interested in all things #dinosaurs, early #evolution & mass extinctions. My favourite dinosaur is Giraffatitan

I am also interested in mental health due to my own lived experience of bipolar 1. I am also autistic. Both have a big impact on me so I do talk about them a lot.

Massive animal lover. Favourite animal is the pangolin. At home I have rabbits & guinea pigs who I love to talk about. But I love most animals so always happy to see & talk about any of them

Musician trained as a viola player, I also play tuba/e flat bass in a brass band. I haven't played viola or violin properly in years but I do want to get back to that.

Qualified nail technician, but not really here for that.

For #FossilFriday check out this gorgeous #fossil #insect! This 49 million year old beauty is Pulchritudo attenboroughi, a #beetle found in the rocks of the Green River Formation, Colorado. what's particularly striking about this fossil is the pattern on its wing cases.

This is my official #introduction that I am attempting to move my primary activity over here. I am a scientific #author and #illustrator. My educational background is in #zoology but my focus is on #fossil ecosystems and these days I am probably most well known for talking about #palaeobotany
