My newest soft pastel work is a nigella flower, also called love-in-a-mist, on a pale blue-violet backdrop. This art has more of a calm, monotone color scheme. The details of the flower's center were a challenge.

I began working on this flamingo pastel last weekend during a demonstration. I wasn't sure I wanted to finish because I was using some lesser quality materials but decided to go ahead and I'm glad that I did. It is looser than my current style but I like it.

This white duck used to be a member of our flock. She was the lone duck in a group of hens but she was the boss. I created this soft pastel portrait a few years ago. We had to re-home our flock last year because of city code enforcement even though we had them long before the laws were passed.

I believe that I've mentioned how much I enjoy working on white flowers in soft pastel. Magnolias are a favorite subject because we have a giant Southern magnolia tree in our back yard which blooms around May and provides me with a lot of inspiration.

This toucan portrait features one of the more colorful birds that I've worked with in soft pastels. I like the whimsical tilt to his head and the multiple hues of the beak. This was on textured paper. I'll have to try one on the smoother Pastelmat that I now use sometime.

This pastel artwork is one of my more fanciful pieces. I wanted to impart a sense of mystery with the creature peering shyly from beneath the roses. The viewer may make up their own story about what this being is and why it is there in the garden. I was also particularly pleased with the rosebuds. I love doing white flowers.

'Buttercup Bunny Rabbit' was created in soft pastel a couple of years ago. When I was a child I recall picking wild buttercups and holding them under our chins. If the yellow appeared on our skin it meant we liked butter. Who doesn't like butter though?

It won't be long before the wisteria vines bloom. I love these delicate purple flowers and the scent is heavenly, but they sure are invasive. I'm forever pulling the running roots up out of my garden, and they don't do the trees any favors.

I've been thinking about doing some new spring florals lately. This Easter lily in soft pastels was created in 2020 for use in Easter greeting card designs. White flowers are a bit of a specialty of mine. I enjoy the challenge of choosing subtle colors to enhance their look.

Our trees have been full of robins lately as spring seems to be early this year. I did this soft pastel of an American robin a couple of years ago. I used it for spring greeting card designs but I think robins are wonderful in any season.

'Owl Portrait in Profile' created in soft pastels back in 2020. I started using Clairefontaine Pastelmat instead of the papers with a more pronounced texture around that time and it has transformed my work.

The saucer magnolia trees are getting ready to bloom in my area. I love to see this early sign of spring but, sadly, most years they end up freezing off. I don't know about you, but I could use something cheery to look at on this gray February day. This primrose was done in soft pastels on a textured paper. I like the way the pink shades from a delicate pale at the petals' edges to a more vibrant red and golden yellow at the center.

Happy #Caturday - Here is a portrait that I did 30+ years ago of my sister's cat, Cass. My style was much different in those days. I was only a few years out of college with a degree in art education that I wasn't using. I had not yet evolved into the artist that I am today. Still, it has a certain charm and is one of my better artworks from that period.

'Blue Heron in the Reeds' soft pastel artwork just completed. I'm happy with the way this one turned out. I wasn't sure about the background, but I like the yellow ochre. It's just bright enough. These large wading birds inhabit the marshy areas, especially down near the coast.

There are many ways to express the concept of love in artwork. Romantic subjects are not my strong suit, but I think my 'Flamingo Valentine' in soft pastels on a lightly textured paper manages to do so, even if in a whimsical fashion.

This pink dianthus blossom artwork was created in soft pastels on sanded paper. I'm not really fond of working on the sanded papers but this one turned out well. These pretty flowers bloom in early to mid spring where I live and have a wonderful scent. I love having them in my garden.

I've just finished this pastel of a wood duck in profile for the 'W' piece in an alphabet bird challenge in which I've been participating. This creature has a distinctive red eye that I find fascinating. I have no idea what I'll do for a bird starting with an 'X' but I think it may have to wait until after the New Year.

I just finished this hydrangea pastel art yesterday. This is the second time I've done pink flowers recently. I'm trying to use colors that I have more of before buying the ones of which I'm running low. Sadly, good quality soft pastels aren't cheap. These delicate flowers will be wonderful on greeting card designs.

This bluebird pastel is one that I did two years ago. I like the way that the softness of the feathers contrasts with the strength of the bird's foot clinging to the twig and the strong vertical lines leading up to the face. The symbolism of happiness also appeals to me.

It's #Caturday again so I'm posting one of my favorite soft pastel pet portraits. The wrinkled skin of this Sphynx cat presented a challenge, but I think it turned out very well, especially the eyes. My own cats have always been the regular, mixed breed kind but I've always found this breed to be uniquely beautiful.
