A magnificent Festiva Maxima peony bloom, although a shade lover, seems to somehow gather the sunlight from the rest of the garden and enfold it into her glowing petals. The intoxicating fragrance of the Festiva Maxima haunts me, even though it's been 8 years since I've seen my sweet peony friend.

I used my own original photo to loosely sketch the image, then digitally paint it, freehand, in a very loose impressionistic style, in Corel Painter.

Is there a #peony community on masto? I received a few flowers as a gift, and suddenly I NEED to know what this one is, so I can try to grow them. I live in Interior #Alaska, so any zone 4 and up varieties are out right off the bat…

From what I’ve read today, I think this would be considered a “semi-double” bloom? [edit] From the pics I’ve found online, it’s neither a Buckeye Belle nor a Chief Black Hawk (both have different stamens than this).

This scene unfolds with variations, flower border at the back of my vegetable garden, every year. In 2019 I spent a lot of time working the situation on different mornings, going through a series of lenses, mostly vintage, to get different compositions — the old lenses draw in different ways. The result was that I have so many i like that I am unable to pick a “best" one. This one just popped up on my screen.

Peonies are so over the top. This peony bench is a remnant from the previous owner. The plant grows a flower or two every year, they're always as big as my two palms and utterly destroy themselves with the weight of the monstrous thing if not supported.
