I love this recipe both for #Shavuot and #Pesach, it’s flourless and creamy and as long as you have either a large blender or a food processor, and an oven that can reach 500°F/260°C, it’s very easy. #Mazeldon https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/basque-style-cheesecake-tarta-de-queso-recipe

Matzah with peanut butter is a special treat for my father and me after Pesach is over, since we don’t do kitniyot. One time, my father dropped a piece face down on the floor so we put it out for the critters. A lucky squirrel came across it, licked all the peanut butter off, and left the matzah! To this day I haven’t gotten over it. #Mazeldon #Pesach #Passover #Food #Matzah

Chag #mimouna to all the #Jews of the fediverse

For those who are unaware of mimouna (I wasn't until a few years ago as its not really an Ashkenazi thing) its a celebration of the end #pesach (#passover) where you eat anything and everything that you can't have during passover.

Red fruit slices are the most popular. My favorite are yellow, but my (admittedly small) family all like red best, confirming the accuracy of my poll. In any case, all fruit slices are delicious especially when made with real fruit juice. #Pesach #Passover #FruitSlices

Today is 7 days—one week—of the Omer (Malkhut within Chesed)

#CountingOfTheOmer

It’s also, for Reform Jews and Jews in Israel, the end of #Pesach. I am noting the occasion with a #donut.

As far as I understand it Pesach for Reconstructionist, & Humanist(?), Jews also lasts 7 days. Orthodox and Conservative Judaism lasts 8 days, so one more day of matzah (though I think it can be a bit wet on the last day?).

#Mazeldon #Jewdiverse #Judaism #Judaism101

Last night of #Pesach was a delightful non-traditional #seder of sorts for our family, in which we recounted some of what we learned and discussed where our thoughts went this season for each of the elements of the seder.

I think it might end up being a new tradition for us. I really liked having the recap/debrief session.

After asking in the House of Commons on 5 April 1944 that Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden confirm the arrest of #Polish #Jewish soldiers who had sought transfer to the British Army, MP Tom Driberg pursued the matter on the 6th, shortly before #Passover & #Easter.

He bemoaned the inability of the Polish military to stamp out #antisemitism and defended the soldiers against charges of cowardice.

Press coverage would now follow.

#Pesach #Mazeldon
10/n

the right hon. Gentleman the Foreign Secretary said—and | was very glad to hear him say it: “Naturally I will, after what has happened to-day, again have conversations on the subject with the Polish Government. | am sure no one could be more anxious than they are to see that there is no anti- Semitism in the ranks of the Polish Army.” A little further on he said: “Improvements have, | know, been made by the Polish Government." | certainly endorse what the right hon. Gentleman said about the good intentions of the Polish Government in this matter; | am not making any attack on them at all; but | am rather afraid that their well-intentioned efforts to stamp out anti-Semitism in their own Forces have not been successful, and that the conversations which the right hon. Gentleman says he will now re- open, if they are to be limited merely to the general question of anti-Semitism and are not to deal with the transfer of further troops, will be ineffective—because | do not believe that you can stamp out anti-Semitism by instructions, by Orders of the Day, or by anything else of that formal kind. | repeat that | know that the Polish Government's intentions in this respect are admirable: there is nothing whatever to be said against them for the very vigorous way in which they have tried to deal with the matter; but anti-Semitism, being essentially an emotional thing, cannot be dealt with in that way. It can be cured only by the process—a rather slow process, probably—of education.
Of the existence of this sentiment to a pretty wide degree in the Polish Forces, there is no doubt. I know of it from my own experience. I have during this war met quite a large number of Polish officers, in officers' messes and so on, and extremely gallant, charming, and decent young men they are. But, unfortunately, if one gets on to these awkward subjects—which one naturally tries to avoid if one is talking to them—one finds that they have certain fixed prejudices, one of which is this deep prejudice against the Jews. | have seen it in almost all the Polish officers | have met and talked to. If there were not this widespread prejudice, it would hardly have been necessary for the Polish Government to appoint, as it did, a commission of inquiry into this matter, which, I understand, made certain recommendations with a view to helping to check these manifestations. Above all, | am convinced of the existence of these anti-Semitic manifestations by meeting and talking to large numbers of these deserters who have come to London ... I have personally seen both the former groups & the group who were arrested last week, & their story is absolutely convincing. .... They are a tough, highly-trained combatant type of soldier, most of them, not the non-combatant clerical type or the sensitive intellectual type, although those types are also present in the group. Their stories are quite horrifying and absolutely convincing. | am certain, on internal evidence, of their authenticity.
All along they have emphasised strongly, in their conversations with me that they were not in any sense trying to run away from the war, or from their duty as fighting men. On the contrary, they want to do it where they believe they can do it more effectively, in the British Army. The letters which | have had from some of those who were transferred, through the good offices of the Foreign Office and the War Office, to the British Army, mention with special delight that the writers have been promised by their commanding officer that, after a preliminary period of six weeks of training and tests, they are to be transferred to the appropriate combatant units of the British Army, and not kept in the Pioneer Corps; they do not want to go merely into the Pioneer Corps. | am not saying anything against the Pioneer Corps, which does most valuable work; but | am sure hon. Members will see my point. It is a fact that there is this widespread anti-Semitism in the Polish Forces, and this fact is in itself intolerable in this country, in the midst of a war against the very kind of system and philosophy of which anti-Semitism is a conspicuous symptom.

That MP Tom Driberg & many other advocates for the arrested #Polish #Jewish soldiers, were on the left only confirmed the instinctive Polish & British right-wing charge (which one still encounters) that the "desertions" were an anti-Polish Bolshevik plot. 1) Driberg was not yet a Soviet agent. 2) He first tried to resolve matters behind the scenes, & 3) after going public, was careful not to criticize the Pl govt.

Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden's response to Tom Driberg on the problem of #antisemitism in the #Polish forces and transfers to the British was characteristically anodyne and evasive.

Driberg pressed him.

Eden pushed back.

But the question would not go away. For the next month and beyond, it made headlines.

Stay tuned . . .

7/n #Passover #Pesach #Mazeldon

The negotiations referred to by the hon. Member, as a result of which in agreement with the Polish Government the transfer to the British Army was arranged of a number of Jewish deserters from the Polish Forces in this country, constituted an entirely exceptional departure from the normal principle that transfers from 1 Allied Army to another cannot be facilitated in war-time. His Majesty's Government, however, took the opportunity to represent to the Polish Government the desirability of making a thorough investigation of the men's grievances & of remedying any that might be found to exist. They understand that a full inquiry has, in fact, been made & that the Polish authorities have taken all steps in their power to ensure that their declared policy of suppressing all manifestations of anti-Semitism is brought to the notice of all ranks in the Polish Armed Forces & that appropriate action is taken to carry it into effect.
...having regard to the overriding importance at the present time of maintaining at the highest level morale & military discipline in the Forces which are preparing to take part...His Majesty's Government & the Polish Government are in entire agreement that it would not be in the best interests of the Allied war effort to enable further members of the Polish Armed Forces to secure their transfer .... | regret therefore that it will not be possible for His Majesty's Government to intervene in the recent cases in the manner that the hon. Member suggests
Mr. Driberg Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are only about 600 men in all now concerned, and that the transfer of such a small number would surely not represent a serious dislocation of any war plans? While fully agreeing that the Polish Government have done what they can, | would like to ask him if he is aware that formal Orders of the Day condemning something like anti-Semitism, which is an emotional thing, do not really get down to the root of the matter, and that these most unfortunate 'and regrettable manifestations are still going on—to the detriment of the military discipline which he refers to.

Mr. Eden | have gone into this question with great care, as we did on an earlier occasion. As | § have already said, the arrangements under which the previous arrangements were effected constituted absolute exceptions to the normal principle. | have to have regard both to military 2012 discipline and to impending operations. | would ask the House seriously to consider, before they press me on a matter of this kind to encourage further movements of members of Polish forces from units which will shortly be going into battle under British command. I have investigated the matter very carefully, and | do not think there is any action | could take.

5 April 1944:

"Mr. Driberg...asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that despite the efforts of the #Polish Government there are persistent and widespread manifestations of #antisemitism in the Polish Forces in this country and that a number of Jewish soldiers & sailors are now undergoing or awaiting court martial for absenting themselves from the Polish Forces in the hope of securing their transfer to the British Force'

And this brings us up to today('s date in 1944).

Left independent MP Tom Driberg had all along been working, along with the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL: forerunner of UK Liberty; equivalent to US ACLU) to assist the #Jewish soldiers in the #Polish Army protesting antisemitism.

The arrest of the soldiers forced him to bring the fight into the open and prepare to raise the matter in the House of Commons.

6/n #Passover #Pesach #Mazeldon #antisemitism

Handwritten note by Driberg, on House of Commons stationery, to Foreign Secretary, raising the issue of antisemitism in the Polish Forces, and asking him to reopen negotiations for the current group of soldiers
Secretary of State | [ I have been in touch with the Speaker's office and have been told that the Speaker has allowed Mr. Driberg's question. 4 | In the event of Mr, Driberg moving the | : Adjournment under Standing Order 8, the B Speaker does not propose to treat the matter 2 as one of urgent importance. I was informed k2 however, that the Speaker proposes to allot Driberg a place in the list of those Members Who will raise matters on the Motion for Adjournment on Thursday. In this event of course a debate cannot be avoided. Unless therefore you prefer to give the official answer that has been prepared with the M| ] e < consequent debate thereon, it occurs to me that the best way of preventing a debate with the publicity which will attach thereto and with its consequent propaganda value to those who are unfriendly to the Poles, would be to reply tomorrow on the following lines: " ........ In view of the feelings 2 of anxiety expressed in the Hon. Gentleman's question, I propose at once to have the fullest discussions with the Polish authorities on the matters referred to in the question."

In late March, 1944 despite the warning from the #Polish authorities, some 30 additional #Jewish soldiers--finding that #antisemitism had increased rather than decreased--traveled from Scotland to London seeking transfers to the British Army.

This time, the hammer came down: On 30 March, London police & Polish MPs raided the Yiddish theater where the soldiers were staying, placed them under arrest, & sent them back to Scotland for a court martial.

5/n #Passover #Pesach #Mazeldon #antisemitism

The authorities approved the transfer of 134 #Polish #Jewish soldiers to the British Army in February 1944 but then drew a line:

In mid-March 1944, #Polish Defence Minister Kukiel issued 2 Orders of the Day: 1 announcing that absence without leave would be treated as desertion in wartime—in the case of “conspiracy,” potentially carrying the death penalty (& threatening the offenders'' families)—& another condemning both "desertion" & antisemitism

4/n #Passover #Pesach #Mazeldon #antisemitism

The efforts of the London #Polish government & military to assure the #Jewish soldiers that they were welcome proved unavailing.

In January 1944, 68 soldiers left their posts in Scotland & traveled to London demanding to join the British Army.
Anxious about bad publicity, UK & Polish authorities silently approved the transfers. The Poles established a commission of inquiry on #antisemitism, but its biased nature prompted another 134 soldiers to leave.

There was no way I wasn’t trying the matzo toffee recipe this year since it’s just me and Mom. Recipe from the NYTimes.

#Pesach #Passover #food

Sugar and butter are melted and boiled together, then poured over broken matzo crackers. That is baked for about 15 minutes in a 350F oven, then topped with chocolate that is allowed to melt and gets spread a bit. Sprinkle on whatever else you want, I went with some flaky sea salt on part, and some powdered sugar on another section.

Mom devoured this shit and picked up every crumb.

I made enough we’ll be eating it for the first half of Pesach week.

Ketzeleh is just as good at hunting down chometz as she is hunting chanukiyahs #Pesach #Mazeldon #Cats #CatsOfMastodon #Ketzeleh

A wild eyed grey and white bicolor kitty chomping the Star of David shamash candle holder on a brass chanukiyah that has a strange crusty greenish patina that makes it look antique and is the result of a failed cleaning experiment. Yes she is trying to eat the chanukiyah.

Old black-and-white photo of what looks like about 25 men and boys in circa-1900 Eastern European clothing, posing in front of the windows outside a brick building. The two men on the ends of the front row each hold what look like giant wooden oars (presumably used to put things into the oven and take them out).

The French Jewish artist Alphonse Jacques Lévy (1843-1918) often drew, painted and sculpted scenes of the Alsatian Jewish world of his youth.

This picture, "Matzo Balls," was one of several Pesach scenes he drew over the years.

Drawing of a woman in 19th-century rural garb (a bonnet, thick blouse, apron) preparing matzo balls. About a dozen balls she has already rolled are in a bowl on a table in front of her.

#DearTeachers,

I hope your #Pesach preparations are proceeding apace! As we all prepare for Pesach, some of our #Christian students and staff may be preparing for their own week of holidays, which, however, does not coincide with Pesach.

The week commemorates the last week before the Christian prophet Yeshu's execution.

Many U.S. companies used to distribute Pesach recipe books to encourage use of their products.

Planters published this one around the 1940s. ("Mr. Peanut says, A Passover Enjoyment!" it says inside.)

One of my kids is gluten-free, so I ordered this box of oat #matzahs which just arrived. Then I looked at the sticker & that confused me. It reads,
"May contain gluten.
Tested from a sample and found to be gluten free" 🤔

I’ve had an email from my synagogue and we have a class on Thursday about Pesach as part of the Introduction to Judaism course (I join online).

I need to have a Seder plate prepared (I’m searching online now for appropriate vegetarian Seder plates) as we’re going to sort of go through a Seder.

But it’s also suggested we have Matso… and that’s something I can’t get in Japan in time. Is there something I could use as an alternative for this class?

Thanks!!

The grocery store near me has an end cap with Manischewitz packaged food, grape juice, boxed matzos, and a box of Shabbat candles. I'm shocked!

(My kid said, "I think they put this out just for us!")

Really disheartened that haggadot.com is advertising a #haggadah for #Pesach written with ChatGPT. Beyond all the reasons to avoid the AI boondoggle in general, a hagaddah should be written by a Jew, no one or nothing else. #Mazeldon
