Saw this excellent bumper sticker today, and made a new doggo friend at the gate right next to the car. Such a sweetie, let out small, breathy whines as I petted him. And just look at those enormous paws.

Something nice about a weekly routine, right?
Today was Tea and Tech Support Tuesday again, with my father.

The little black doggo is Nischke. He got her during the lockdown, she's a rescue who had to be given up by her previous owners as they went into an old age home.

It was love at first sight between her and my father. From the very first moment, at the SPCA, she decided that he's Her Person. She doesn't let him out of her sight. And he allows her on the furniture! Absolutely unheard of!

I sometimes wonder what my mother would say, if she was still alive. I kind of think she'd be fine with it.

Willemien (the red kitty on the windowsill) has *Opinions*, but she keeps them to herself.

Trying to get some writing done, but Jasper keeps stealing my teaspoon.

I mean, strictly speaking I don't really need a teaspoon to write, but it's so distracting! He looks so pleased with himself as he absconds with his loot. His plan is to take it deep into the sofa so he can have his way with it, and I can't allow that.

How many Senior pets do you see surrendered at your local shelters?

I see at least two per month at ours.

This week I learned two cats, 11 years old each, we’re surrendered bc owners moved to a no-pet property.

They were litter box trained, affectionate and sweet.

Tragic!

I now have two rat dig boxer permanently connected to the rat cage with a piece of PVC pipe. I swop them out. You can see how they flattened the grass in the "Garden Box", so it's taking a much needed break outside getting sun.

Since (hooray!) the lid fits exactly on another plastic bin, I replaced it with a the "Maze Box" which is basically another plastic bin filled with a cardboard maze and dry grass for the little monsters to dig through.

The holes in the lid are useful for dropping little bits of food through when the rats are in the dig box. They look hilarious, tiny noses sticking through the holes.

So far Maurice hasn't fallen down the pipe into the box yet, but not for lack of trying. I have to put him in there and take him out, his hind legs don't work at all any more, but he's just as keen to explore as the younger rats.

I usually take the rats out of the cage when I clean it, because it can be difficult to keep track of the little buggers escaping out of the open door and clambering about everywhere. But lately I've been cleaning while they sleep, not bothering to take them out first.

Saffy doesn't sleep, though. She tries to get hold of any rags I use. I'm not sure what her plan is?

I'm so proud of her. She's gone from being desperately scared of me, as in bone-rattling shaking, to being an utter snuggle bug. Last night she was curled up in my hand while I watched Critical Role. Suddenly she must have decided she wanted to get back home because she leapt from my lap into the door of her cage, almost a meter away.

I've never seen her do anything like it.

She was just as surprised as I was, she turned around and popped her eyes at me *pop pop pop* like a combination blink and stare. Like she was saying "OMG DID YOU SEE THAT?"

The rats are in the dig box! I was worried they'd have trouble getting up the vertical pipe back into the cage but they are skipping up and down easily.

Saffy was the first into the box. It's so interesting. She's the rat that's by far the most scared of people, but she's very brave when it comes to exploring new spaces.

Oof #today was just one long list of doing stuff that I'd not planned to do, mostly tech support for my father.

His computer monitor was actually whistling! Not that he noticed, his hearing's not that great.

But we had a very civilised tea on the stoep with all the dogs and cats in attendance, so that's OK.

Tomorrow I'll catch up with everything I was supposed to do today...

Whoops sorry posted this by accident without any information. Sorry for the people who commented on the original!

My rats now have an ON SUITE GARDEN THEY CAN VISIT ANY TIME THEY LIKE.

I grew wheat grass and various other safe plants in the dig box, cut a hole in the lid, and connected it to the cage pretty securely and (for me) neatly. There's a translucent bit of pvc poking through the cage door you can't really see, and another translucent bit of pipe extending all the way down nearly to soil level. It's all quite firmly fixed.

So far Nicodemus has sniffed at the "garden door" and not ventured inside, and everyone else is still fast asleep.

I think they'll get into it easily, and struggle to get out back into the cage. But I want to hold off from providing ladders etc until I see how they manage.

If Mr Zumbador doesn't object, I'll probably end up filling my entire house with connected boxes eventually...One big rat maze.

My shadecloth experiment is working beyond my wildest dreams!

It's 1) grippy enough for ramps that an old rat can climb 2) easy to clean and 3) not tempting for them to chew.

I built a big spiral ramp all the way up the cage. The central atrium, as it were, is filled with many shadecloth safety nets to catch silly old buggers who like falling off edges of said ramps.

The younger rats still climb up the sides, or race round in a big spiral, so they have more running space which is great.

I made a small heated space for Maurice, and as you can see he's found the warmest spot which is actually just *above* the warm box.

Today, after his breakfast, I bundled him into the black plastic penthouse bed right into the top of the cage which he can't reach even with the ramps. You can't see him in the picture, he's underneath Jasper, the handsome young fellow with the whiskers.
