I can’t count how many times I’ve walked right by this tiny, old #ToynbeeTile just a stone’s throw from #Philadelphia city hall. I’ve seen some of these old ones down in the narrow old alleys of #SouthPhilly but to have a decades-old tile in the shadow of City Hall is really something else. It’s also in a crosswalk so it blends in with the degrading crosswalk stripes, I only realized it was a tile after noticing some of the text. The message is tough to guess at, probably starts “…[hel]lions…”

I used to work in #WestPhilly and so I sometimes zip over there for formerly convenient things like dentist and haircut. Today was that day, so I offer some architectural bits from that side of town... Lots of #reflections here. #Philadelphia #streetPhotography #architecture

A tall modern building, the end of which juts out at a diagonal to the street line. Part of it comes to a point, and other sections (clad in a lighter gray color) ar cut out from the angled section. Not sure if they did this for the look of the building or for the view down Market Street, but I like it (and the contrast to the two 3-story row houses immediately adjacent, at the lower left in the photo).
Photo of a classic-looking gothic-style church, with two squared towers, a rose window, and an elaborate entrance. The front is dappled and patterned with light reflected from the modern glass building directly across (in today's rare sunshine).
Most of this building looks like a simple glass highrise, but the right side in the lower section (maybe floors 3-5 and 7-10) the flat glass surface is interruped by two set-back portions that also bump outward from the glass side of the building. Those portions appear to be made of cement or some similar material, although they do have windows... In the lower left part of the flat plane, some other buildings are reflected -- the rest is sky blue.

(Also, sharp eyes might pick out the seemingly random sculpture down by the entrance to this building, in which the letters of LAWN have been arranged like the stacked letters of the famous LOVE statue from downtown, but each letter a different color.)
Photo from street level looking up a gridded glass highrise toward the blue sky. In the lower-right portion of the building is reflected another modern building, as though subdividing those grid squares into further segments with alternating turquoise and white stripes.

Today in Labor History March 15, 1877: Ben Fletcher, African-American IWW organizer was born on this date. Fletcher organized longshoremen in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He joined the Wobblies (IWW) in 1912, became secretary of the IWW District Council in 1913. He also co-founded the interracial Local 8 in 1913. By 1916, thanks in large part to Fletcher’s organizing skill, all but two of Philadelphia’s docks were controlled by the IWW. And the union maintained control of the Philly waterfront for about a decade. After the 1913 strike, Fletcher traveled up and down the east coast organizing dockers. However, he was nearly lynched in Norfolk, Virginia in 1917. At that time, roughly 10% of the IWW’s 1 million members were African American. Most had been rejected from other unions because of their skin color. In 1918, the state arrested him, sentencing him to ten years for the crime of organizing workers during wartime. He served three years.

(3/3) The Chestnut Hill Water Tower c. 1896, 1905, and 2023.

The earliest shot is from PhillyHistory.Org and the second is from the Germantown Historical Society.

Modern shot with the Seneca Improved View Camera (c. 1917), paper negative, scanned with a cell phone while still wet, and inverted in PS.

I couldn't get far enough back to get the same angle as the 1904 shot because of trees and my longer lens. But a better exposure since I bracketed.

#BelieveInFilm #LargeFormat #Philadelphia

circa 1896 view of the Chestnut Hill Water Tower. Built in 1859. This is a similar view as the following, but it is well before most of the houses were built or the road was finished. The actual tank is in good shape on top of the tower.
circa 1905 view of the Chestnut Hill Water Tower. Not quite the same view as the previous. Now the houses are built and the sidewalks constructed. The tank is still visible.
2023 shot of the Chesnut Hill Water Tower. The tank is gone, having blown away in 1917! The houses on either side are the same, though. The street is now tree lined, so it was necessary to get closer to the tower in order to get a good view of it.

(2/3) The Chestnut Hill Hotel, c.1900 and 2023.

Archive Image from the Germantown Historical Society.

Modern shot with Seneca Improved View Camera (c. 1917?), paper negative (cell scanned while still wet!) inverted in Photoshop. Not quite the right angle or field of view, but I think Id have needed a wider lens and to play in traffic to make it better. Didnt nail the exposure. But fun first try, and I hadnt shot paper negatives in a while.

#BelieveInFilm #LargeFormat #Philadelphia

Historic Photo of the Chesnut Hill Hotel. C. 1900, showing the original version of the building. With turrets at both ends of the building. Many people are standing around in front of the building.

The watermark of the Germantown Historical Society is visible.
Modern photo of the same building, 123 years later. The turrets have been removed, the porch is now an outdoor restaurant, but the building is still recognizable. The turrets were apparently removed c. 57-58.

I managed to get groggily through my ambitions for the day (including late-day yoga!), so I'm celebrating with a few favorite shots from the #PHS Flower Show earlier this week. There's a lot of flash, but I found I liked the little container plantings, Ikebana arrangements, and generally things more human-scaled than the entrance display and full landscapes. (Also, you can breathe in those areas!)
#Philadelphia #plants #FlowerShow

Photo of a large installation with a Chinese theme (clearer in the flower panda and tea table elsewhere) that has tall bamboo/caned structures almost like half-parasols, ornamented with violet orchids. I liked the dramatic mix of the structures with the flowers and ground plantings..
A container planting involving a mass of succulents. The container is an oblong cement or stone planter, maybe 14 or 16 inches long, and it's been filled with a real variety of plant types, from hen-and-chicks low guys to taller, fuzzy green leaves, to dangling burro tails and a number of things of various shapes and shades of green, yellow, and rust, with no soil visible in between.
A single pot filled with what I think is one cactus plant, which appears almost like a bunch of grapes laid horizontally. Each little protrusion of cactus is covered with a fine fuzz, and the source of the fuzz/needles can be seen in a satisfying geometric pattern of rows of white dots against the green skin below. The remainder of the terra cotta pot is filled with fine gravel or sand.
Photo of a modern ikebana (Japanese cut flower arrangement) construction around the theme of "lightning." (The overall show theme was The Garden Electric.) Some thin, flat leaves that are yellow in the center and green at the edges have been laid in four segments in a zig-zag that very much looks like a lighting bolt -- held in place between plexiglass panels, as best as I could tell. At several junctures a young bird-of-paradise-type flower sticks out, accompanied by a spray of tiny yellow orchids. The whole thing is about 3-4 feet tall, very striking, and apparently won some kind of grand prize at the show.

Spent the morning at the #Philadelphia Flower Show -- more on that another time. But my #PhotoMonday offering comes from nearby, somewhere just off 12th. No idea when this arrived, but it's new to me!!! The figures are sort of... terraced in a way that makes them look 3D printed, but I don't know what the actual material is.

View down an alley off a major street, at some kind of umbilical connection between two buildings across the alley width -- small for a walkover, but small for a duct, so who knows. (I guess it could be part of the piece?) At each end, where the "bridge" meets the building on either side, is a jumble of naked, bald figures made of some light gray material, sort of bracing themselves against the building, holding up the bridge and generally reaching to hold things together. The figures are quite realistic, although they have very neutral expressions.

Today for #PhotoMonday an assortment of Signs Around Town that made me smile for one reason or another. (See image text for more.)
#Philadelphia #streetPhotography

Photo of a sign hung on a chainlink fence. The sign is in black and red, and offers "For Lease... Retail Space" and a phone number (rubbed out by me). Behind the fence is a huge rubble pit-stage construction site. Ambitions!!
Photo of a townhouse window where several things have been leaned against the glass outside the blinds. On the left is just the edge of some kind of official-looking sign (maybe Tenant Needed?), on the right is a pink and purple painting of a night sky, and in the middle is a small canvas painted with a rainbow and the word "ME!"
Photo of the (side) entrance to a building. Shown is the upper third of a wood door with a vertical window (with round bottle-bottom-style glass) and a poster about something. The door is surrounded by a gray wall and door frame, above which is written, in white paint and curly script, the words "a feel good bar".
photo of a brown brick wall with a green parkingn sign bolted to it. In yellow print the sign reads: "No Parking Violators Towed." We know what is intended, of course, and yet it feels like a reassurance...

Here's a sampling of the many #murals in #Philadelphia

#StreetArt #Mural

Contemplation, Clarity, Resilience, by Eric Okdeh. The culmination of months of workshops at the Kirkbride Center, an inpatient behavioral health facility, Contemplation, Clarity, Resilience speaks to the process of acknowledging, accepting, and overcoming hardship.
Atlas of Tomorrow is a mural by artist Candy Chang, which has a kinetic component in which the viewer can spin the wheel at the bottom.
Eight storeys' high, Common Threads features characters based on antique figurines owned by the artist's grandmother, with students from two area high schools mirroring their poses. The mural, which was created in 1998, reflects the common threads that link us across cultures and across time. On a typical weekday, 5,800 people pass through the SEPTA stop at Broad & Spring Garden Streets, making this one of Mural Arts' most visible and iconic murals.
"Colorful Legacy" mural by artists Willis “Nomo” Humphrey and Keir Johnston. The project has helped to raise awareness of the issues men and boys of color face in gaining access to education and jobs, increase men and boys’ access to behavioral health services by reducing stigma, and building momentum toward both community and individual wellness for a diverse group of men and boys of color in Philadelphia.

Streetartwall. In a bar is sprayed this Mural of an eye. On a wall in the staircase, which is completely covered with colorful graffiti, posters and stickers, the eye is partially sprayed over it. In the colors gray, white, brown and black, it is very realistically depicted with reflection in the eye center. One discovers two figures sitting side by side in it.

View of a cavernous interior; through a gaping hole in the floor the floors above and below are visible. The building has been stripped to bare concrete and the floors, walls, and support columns. Work lights placed sporadically about light the area

A 31-year-old PhD student Julie Hudson was arrested in Philadelphia based on a warrant issued by #police outside #Houston, #Texas.

The #Philadelphia woman, who says she has never been to Texas, spent nearly a week behind bars for a crime that was committed there after police outside Houston falsely concluded that she was the same person who was captured in surveillance video shoplifting at a local sporting goods store.

Those are amazing! Check out this link to the artist who created the Philadelphia Magic Gardens. They’re all mosaics and mosaic sculptures from found objects.

A beautiful curving pathway with walls on both sides. Every surface is a different, colorful mosaic created from found objects. Mostly pottery, dishes, glassware, bottles, and some metals.
You are gazing up at wall with differing levels. Each has a new delight of colorful found objects that glimmer in sunlight. There are wine bottles, plates, bowls, pottery, and more.

An #introduction: Hi! I’m Travis! I’m a queer #solarpunk #softwareengineer living in #philadelphia.

During the day I work at @azavea developing #geospatial web apps. I also volunteer as a team lead with #CodeForPhilly developing #civictech.

I previously have worked as a bike mechanic, #biketour leader, and video producer. I have been dabbling in #mtb and #pixelart as hobbies, and have 2 cute cats.
