I am starting #ArtAdventCalendar with this Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta), a small North American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell. Each print is 8” by 8” on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. I am truly charmed by the idea of a snail shell nest!

This work features 2 large linocuts of two leaf cutter bees: Megachile relativa and Megachile brevis. These linocuts are made on collaged Japanese washi papers and cellophane to capture the colours in their bodies and wings. Each print has its own array of leaf and petal prints from leaves and petals used by leaf cutter bees from my garden. The plants used include raspberries, roses (leaves and petals), lily of the valley, lilac, hollyhock, cone flowers and more. Each print is 17" tall by 12" wide

Cabbage White Butterfly on a faded morning glory. Now that I know what these little guys are called, I keep seeing them everywhere. And they're not too hard to photograph. 🥰

(I was waiting for my wife after an event, and only had my walkaround lens, hence the image isn't very sharp. It still seemed pretty enough to share late on a rainy Friday.)

Still busy collecting, not too cold yet.

We are in October but the hard cold hasn't hit yet and on sunny days like this one was, the bees are frantically busy, lining up for a feed, like Grand Central Station at the ticket counter.

Have a great Friday, Fedi Friends.

Lawns use a lot of water. Native plants use a lot less water. Many native plants are beautiful flowers. They also help bees, which are endangered and upon whom are agricultural system and ecosystem depend.

Clover lawns also use a lot less water, require much less maintenance, and help bees.

#bee on Carlina acaulis in the #garden
This is a #composite #flower so those 'petals' aren't, nor are they ray flowers as in many composites (sunflowers, asters, daisies etc)- those white strappy parts are papery bracts, just there to draw #pollinator attention. The actual flowers are all those tiny things in the centre- --cont-

A smallish bumblebee with light gold hair on the front, a black bald 'shoulder' part, and an orange band on the 'rump'- not very visible in this view, covered with folded back shiny translucent wings. It sits on a large flower head with whitish pointy stiff bracts pretending to be petals, and a flat centre with piles of tiny florets, the outer rings seem to be open and they look like tiny purply red pistils. The centre area is whitish, and I can't tell if those will be more pistils or stamens. Some spiky/thistly leaves visible behind.

"The teams removed the viburnum hedges that were there near the popular splash fountain to clear the space and add in 4,000 pollinator-friendly native flowering plants and grasses."

Very cool! 😄

Let #dandelions grow. #Bees, #beetles and #birds need them

May, 2015

"As I write, thousands of hectares of such #wildflower habitat are being destroyed under the blades of our #lawn mowers, and the bees, pollen #beetles butterflies and #moths are going hungry. As a weed, it’s one of the most unpopular of the bunch: dandelion tap roots are notoriously hard to dig out, the plants have an almost unrivalled knack of propagating themselves, including in walls and cracks in paving where nothing else would live, and – to add insult to injury – they are often the first flower we see in spring and the last in autumn. The dandelion is bold and brash and unrelenting. But that is why it is brilliant. It’s virtually everywhere and nearly always in flower; it’s the #pollinator’s best friend.

"#Bumblebees, solitary bees and #honeybees all visit dandelions for food, along with hoverflies, beetles, and #butterflies such as the peacock and holly blue. #Goldfinches and house #sparrows eat the seed. Yet most of us gardeners miss out on the spectacle of watching wildlife feast on our dandelions, because we wage such a war against them as weeds."

I've heard that we focus too much on the monarch butterfly to the detriment of other bugs. Its stunning beauty gives it a marketing edge that other insects don't have.

But monarchs bring people into the #pollinator world. Once someone gets into monarchs, they learn about caterpillars, wildlife habitat, native plants. And planting #milkweed and nectar flowers for monarchs helps lots of other #butterflies and #bumblebees.
