Printed colour postcard showing the "Druids Stone of Outer Circle (North)" at Avebury in Wiltshire. Published by Tomkins & Barrett of Swindon, The Famous Series, № 6, c.1910. #Avebury #StoneCircles #Megaliths #Postcards #StandingStoneSunday

A vintage colour postcard showing a young lad leaning against a fence and with a couple of the huge megaliths of the prehistoric stone circle complex at Avebury in Wiltshire behind him. A panel at the bottom reads "Aubrey, the Antiquarian, tells us that 'Abury did as much exceed Stonehenge as a cathedral did a parish church'. The stone circles of Avebury are some of the oldest and most extensive megalithic ruins we possess. One of these, near the road leading to the village from Kennett, is 13 feet high, 18 feet wide, and 4 feet thick. The other, near it, is 14 feet high, 16 feet wide, and 5½ feet thick. These two are at the point where the Kennett Avenue joined the Great Circle."

95 years ago:

First return flight of the Graf Zeppelin from US to Germany--28 October - 1 November 1928--broke the record for fastest long-distance flight.

Commander Hugo Eckener (1868-1954) was an anti-#Nazi who even considered running for president against Hitler in 1932.

Halloween Public Service Announcement.

Halloween postcard, circa 1910

#Halloween #Witches #pumpkins #postcards

Color postcard artwork. Background is an outdoor night scene, with tall grass, oversized mushrooms, and a black cat arching its back.

At left is a witch, old woman in a red and green robe, holding a home-made broom in her left hand. Her right hand is raised high above her head in a dramatic gesture as she looks at the figure at right.

The figure at right is shaped a person, but with body and limbs replaced with a series of pumpkins. The head is a smiling jack-o-lantern. The pumpkin-person wears a top hat and has a smoking pipe in its mouth.

Text:

Monochrome real photographic postcard showing part of the large stone circle at the Rollright Stones near Long Compton in Oxfordshire. Published by Frank Packer of Chipping Norton in about 1940, not numbered. #StoneCircles #Megaliths #RollrightStones #Postcards #StandingStoneSunday

A vintage black and white photographic postcard showing an arc of the King's Men stone circle at the Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire, close to the border with Warwickshire. A dolmen called the Whispering Knights is on the opposite side of the same field and an isolated menhir, the King Stone, stands across the county border on the other side of the road. The stones of all three are oolitic limestone. Frank Packer is known to have reused some of the photos originally taken by Percy Simms, also of Chipping Norton, a couple of decades earlier.

A very rare monochrome real photographic postcard of the cup-marked stone at Easter Tobairandonaich in Perthshire, titled "Cup-Marked Stone, Derculich". Publisher not stated, though the photo is identical to that in an article by John H. Dixon in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland for 1922 (extract in alt text, and see http://journals.socantscot.org/index.php/psas/article/view/7527 to download the article, including photo). Not numbered, c.1920s. #Strathtay #CupMarks #Petroglyphs #Postcards #StandingStoneSunday

"This stone is a comparatively recent discovery. Face downward it formed the doorstep of an old stable, and the cups became visible only when it had to be lifted in order that a drain below the stable might be cleared. The Gaelic name of the place means "Sunday Well." There is a holy well 30 yards to the south. Tobairandoinaich, or, to be exact, Easter Tobairandonaich, is a ruined village with the remains of two farm-steadings and many dwellings on the hillside above the mansion-house of Derculich on the north side of the Tay in the parish of Weem. The ruins are about 800 feet above sea-level. The distance from Grandtully Station to Derculich House is nearly 2 miles. It is a stiff ascent to Tobairandonaich. The ruin of the place is complete—not a roof remains. It must have been deserted many years ago. The great size of many stones in the ruins is noticeable. The stone (fig. 1, No. 1; and fig. 2) has nineteen cups all on the same face. The largest cup is 3¾ inches in diameter and 2 inches deep. The next largest has the same diameter, but is 1½ inch deep. Other five of the cups are very nearly the same size. The smallest cup is 1¾ inch in diameter and ½ inch deep, but weathering has effected much towards almost obliterating Some of the smaller cups. The stone is of whinstone with slight veins of quartz. It is oval in form and varies in thickness from 2½ inches to 4 inches. Its greatest diameter is 3 feet 2 inches, and its least diameter 2 feet 8 inches." PSAS 56, 1922, pp35-6.

Does anyone know of an image #fileformat that stores #halftone values instead of pixels?

I’m a little obsessed by beauty of this visual style (I’ve been squinting at the detail in #postcards since I was tiny!) especially for low quality images on high fidelity screens, but my experiments with SVGs are painfully bulky and can be slow to render.

I keep seeing #PostcardSwap and it intrigues me. I've noticed that postcards are becoming less and less common with the advent of instant messaging. But I like them - I like sending them, and I like receiving them. As I sit here now, I have a wall of ones I've received since before I moved into this house right in front of me, from all over #Europe and it makes me smile knowing that every one was sent by someone who wanted to share something with me because they know it means the world to me. They're little things, but they are tangible and physical and actual, and I can't imagine ever discarding them.

I occasionally buy old #postcards too, but only if they have been sent, and they are intact including the #stamp. There's something about holding a small piece of #social #history in your hand, knowing that someone kept it because it meant something to them, something that stopped them dropping it in the bin when they were tidying up. Timelessness.

Just listed a postcard for sale which was sent from Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně) to the director Wilhelm Dieterle in Hollywood. His film The Life of Emile Zola won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1937. I'm not so good at reading German handwriting, so if anyone can translate any of it I'd be very interested in what it says.
