"A 2% #tax on assets above £10m held by all members of the Sunday Times rich list could raise as much as £22bn, according to analysis by Tax Justice UK, the Economic Change Unit and the New Economics Foundation (NEF).

The campaigners said similar wealth taxes in Norway, Spain and Switzerland had helped to reduce #inequality and eased the #CostOfLivingCrisis for some of the poorest people in those countries."

My partner and I desperately need #MentalHealth #therapy both individually and as a couple. This is yet another delightful #feature of #poverty; we're too #poor to get the help we need to function like normal adults, and we're not stable or #functional enough to maintain the kind of #income necessary to pay for thorough, effective #psychotherapy.

Facebook/Meta is doing what it does best: getting rid of their content moderators.
They recently laid off their Kenyan team consisting of 180 people. The team was being paid absolute shit, have no savings, and have been barred from re-submitting applications. They have a fundraiser that is currently only at 7% of its goal.
https://gogetfunding.com/african-content-moderators/

Meta obviously hasn't learned from what happened in Ethiopia. In 2020–2022, an estimated 385,000–600,000 (the conservative count) died in the Tigray war. This war was largely fueled by a desire for ethnic cleansing, which was exacerbated and spread by Facebook posts. These posts containing hate speech would have been caught if Meta had an adequate content moderation team.
https://www.globalwitness.org/en/campaigns/digital-threats/ethiopia-hate-speech/
https://www.npr.org/2022/12/17/1142873282/facebook-meta-lawsuit-ethiopia-kenya-abrham-amare

With about half a million people dead and 13 million affected by the resulting famine, Facebook is currently being sued for 1.6 billion. And instead of making sure that their social media site doesn't insight violence, they're laying off moderators and pouring money into virtual worlds that no one actually wants.
If you have the money, please donate to the ex-moderator's legal fund. The more legal pressure put on Meta means a lower chance of another genocide.

In this episode of Sean Illing’s The Gray Area #podcast, Sean interviews sociologist Matt Desmond on #poverty, #inequality and our collective complicity therein.

Desmond likens the American #poverty debate to a quote from novelist Tommy Orange:

“These kids are jumping out of the windows of burning buildings, falling to their deaths, and we think the problem is that they are jumping.”

In other words, we focus on the jumpers and not the fire (and who started it)…

From Kenya to Mexico, Texas, and beyond, 3D-printed houses are starting to go up all over the world. Besides providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing structure, one of the biggest goals of 3D-printed homes is affordability. The technology replaces part of the human labor needed for building, cutting the cost of construction and lowering the home’s final price tag.

The drop in CPI figure masks continued high food inflation and rising core inflation.

19% food inflation means food prices have e risen nearly 20% in the last year and prices will not go down. For poorer families, this is a disaster.

The media keep talking about how inflation will drop but prices have risen and workers need an increase in pay to match the increase in bills.

His mom was strangled to death & it devastated his mental health. And then he was strangled to death.

Often, there's only 1 person we can count on who loves us. If that person dies, it can cause a years-long descent into mental illness. Many of us are one loss away.

To those saying the mentally ill should be involuntarily committed, consider that the US cant even deliver *voluntary* mental health services.

I’ve often complained that when the US “ended welfare as we know it” (in 1996) no one kept track of what happened to the people who were on welfare. How many lost their apartments? Became drug addicts? Went to jail? Died?

There’s no doubt in my mind all of these things happened as a consequence. But we’ll never know the numbers. People with money and power didn’t want to talk about it. They didn’t want to know.

Lately I've seen an unattributed meme circulating that's somewhat incorrectly--or at least incompletely--worded. Still a valuable thought, but in respect for the author, I thought a full version, complete with the source, might be useful.

#NativeAmerican #LameDeer #poverty #culture

Image of the book cover, "Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions," by John (Fire) Lame Deer and Richard Erdoes, alongside an excerpt: "Before our white brothers came to civilize us we had no jails. Therefore we had no criminals. You can't have criminals without a jail. We had no locks or keys, and so we had no thieves. If a man was so poor that he had no horse, tipi or blanket, someone gave him these things. We were too uncivilized to set much value on personal belongings. We wanted to have things only in order to give them away. We had no money, and therefore a man's worth couldn't be measured by it. We had no written law, no attorneys or politicians, therefore we couldn't cheat. We really were in a bad way before the white men came, and I don't know how we managed to get along without these basic things which, we are told, are absolutely necessary to make a civilized society.”
