Feel like I’m back on track with my iOS side project - after two months learning how to make and embed Blender animations, I went through each view today and got the #Preview structs working (they’d never worked in the beta). I can't believe macos expects the user to install separate software to open/view svgs. The image viewer is not equipped to show svg files in 2023 ? I thought this was a machine for media editing!

Now have quite solid evidence that my problem with #macOS #Ventura not displaying buttons properly is actually LINKED to my other major problem, which is that, after a week or so of normal uptime, my Mac Pro starts failing to display pictures (JPEG, PNG, HEIC, etc.) properly in various apps, including Apple's own #Preview. The bug seems to involve hardware acceleration with the M2 Ultra, which Affinity Photo lets me manually turn off.

I'm not specifically blaming #Homebrew or #ImageMagick for this. I suspect that something Apple did to #Preview in #macOS #Sonoma causes it to "choke" on some metadata inserted by Convert and other popular Linux utilities.

Update on my #macOS #Sonoma #Preview issue: It appears to be related to images edited or created by #imagemagick!

I often use the convert command in #homebrew to resize or transcode images for blogs and it appears that anything it touches becomes anathema to Preview in Sonoma. And it appears this is the case for some online sites from which I download images too! For example, download this (the original trademark for Rolex) and try to open it in Preview.

@christianselig You should still be able to use PreviewProvider + the previewContext modifier even in Xcode 15. If you do use #Preview for widgets though you do need to set up the widget timeline, but at worst you just need to pass in a single timeline entry

In the hopes that it saves someone else some frustration…I just discovered you can't have an object in your project with the same name as one of the new Swift Macros. If you do you'll get the not super obvious error “No macro named X”.

I just ran into this because I had a view named "Preview" in my project which meant that if I tried to use any of the new #Preview options, my project wouldn't compile. Renaming my class completely fixed this.

That look longer than I'd like to admit to work out.

@twostraws Xcode 15b3 releas notes say that #Preview works for pre-iOS 17/macOS 14, which is great, but I'm still running into MainActor isolation issues, and MainActor.assumIsolated is iOS 17+. Are there any other workarounds (other than old-style preview)? Not that big a deal, but I find it hard to believe it's this broken. Apple’s own sample code doesn’t build, so I wonder how this got released without a note. (BTW just bought a year of HWS+, you do great work!)

But why does `#Preview{}` need to generate an error?

@ishabazz do you happen to have a '#Preview' somewhere in your code that calls your model type’s initializer? If so, you’re running into a known compiler bug (that is already fixed on GitHub), and removing the preview will work around the issue.

Warning: if you use #Preview macros #Xcode 15 Beta 2 is not especially for you:

> #Preview can’t reference symbols in Swift type extensions when they are defined in the same module as the Preview
> Workaround: Comment out #Preview and use the legacy PreviewProvider API.

I *see* there’s a ton of advanced stuff I don’t understand yet, but I also see that I don’t have to understand it to benefit from it.

I’ll use macros like #preview for years before I learn how or why or when to write my own. And I’ll be able to do that on my own terms.

@mergesort SwiftData? (I was looking at #Preview/macros there, but all in my mostly blank New Project with SwiftData turned on.)

As for that... certainly some differences. Boutique doesn't care about property level things as long as it's Codable where SwiftData seems to want a little more structure (so it can offer queries and relationships). Grain of salt since I haven't seen a session yet, but it does feel like a less-boilerplate/Swifty Core Data where Boutique is a bit more AppStorage.
