Begun reading #Chokepoint #Capitalism by Rebecca Giblin and @pluralistic and it's interesting to see a very identifiable political thread in its blurb people- Adam Conover, Lawrence Lessig, Zephyr Teachout, Jimmy Wales.
These people, who I would, personally, characterize as left-liberals much of the time, provide an interesting anchor point in the political and economic movement for #socialjustice. Some of them have gained an amount of reach and are viewed as experts or at the very least accessible communicators.
In the introduction we see a point of tension in the dialectic between "the minimum demand" (mild, almost performative reform) and "the maximum demand" (#revolution from the root to a different system). #Trotsky is known for the transitional program, but *Reform and Revolution* by #Luxemburg, a bunch of #Kautsky. It's a very long current in the camp of people that want to replace the relations of society and production.
Fascists obviously have used critiques of capitalism in order to gain a political audience, but Germany during the Third Reich reminds one a lot of the kind of incestuous relationship of dominant industry and the political elite.
The question is basically, can what is in many ways a deep overhaul of the #administrative state, something everyone thinks of when they think of Sen. Elizabeth #Warren, really possible? There has to be enough "democracy in the system" to get to the end point, and the US in particular has both issues of #federalism and a federal judiciary that despises the administrative state. Also changes such as relate to monopoly, monopsony, and competition, may in some cases lack what I think is the core way that #reformism can be built upon- stickiness.
I mean essentially that universal benefit programs, well funded, are the most difficult to reverse from the free-market right. They have a very large supportive population that melds the poor, working class, and aspects of the petty bourgeoisie and professionals together in common interests.
Targeting, as is done in neoliberalism, creates inter-class conflict among those not in the elite, and can be stoked additionally by #race, #citizenship, and other factors. Neoliberalism by design when it does #welfare makes programs extremely brittle and easy to defund.
So even though the Tories have had two decade and a half long reigns in power since 1979, and Tony Blair was thoroughly a center-right New Labour PM, the #NHS has stubbornly stuck around even in its crisis state. It has resiliency.
But having enough #democracy in the system is difficult. We can look at Castillo in #Peru and #Boric in Chile, who both rode into power promising a fundamentally new, inclusive, and anti-neoliberal constitution. Actually getting through entrenched power structures, a right-wing #media apparatus, and the eternal riddle of many aspects of a #constitution being popular but at a referendum it adds up to less.
The phrase "#Chile will be the tomb of #neoliberalism imagines an end to neoliberalism- #AMLO talks about this a lot whatever you might think of his time in power. But how do you get over the hump? How do you dispatch it, and make sure it doesn't return? How do you hold sustained power so the capitalists can't just reverse all that can be done? How can genuine democracy and social justice come to fruition?
I don't have a lot of answers, but I appreciate how much was sparked just in the introduction of Chokepoint Capitalism

The GOP really hit the jackpot with transgender people as their latest target. But let's begin with the observation that it has nothing to do with being transgender, or drag shows, or anything else. Fascists do not care who they hate. They only care *that* they hate. When I was a kid, they hated Dungeons and Dragons, and did their level best to bring back the Witch Trials. Who they hate is arbitrary.
But let's look at why this current target demographic is such a gold mine for them, and let's say it plainly: Leftists are not united in their feelings.
Many of the previous targets of hate have been normalized to the point that there's almost nobody to peel off of the Democratic side owing to disagreement or disinterest. There's no traction for openly banning Jewish, or black, or homosexual identity.
With transgender identity, it's different. In a June 2022 poll, around 60% of Democratic respondents agreed that a person's gender can be different than their biological sex. That's worlds better than GOP respondents (13%), but it's got a long, long way to go. As you go up the age brackets on the Left, support dwindles. And despite a good showing in 2022, the youngest potential voters -- the ones who most support transgender rights -- are the least likely to vote.
And can we be honest with ourselves about this? A lot of Left Leaning voters are fine with saying the words, and maybe they'll go to a drag show to offer their support, but in their private life and mind, they really don't understand all of this, and it makes them uncomfortable.
That's the kind of wedge the GOP has become expert at exploiting. Find an issue where the Right is united and the Left is wishy washy. Run that up every flagpole in every town, and hope a few people on the Left "forget" to vote.
In short, if you, Dear Leftist, are even a smidge less enthusiastic, less engaged, less outspoken, less demonstrative, less giving out of the depths of your checkbook in support of Transgender Rights than you were of Black Lives Matter, or women's reproductive rights, then you are playing into the GOP plan. You are an unwitting dupe.
Do whatever soul searching you must do, and consider this: It is inevitable that this effect will play out. It's not inevitable that it will work -- there's a lot of anger toward the GOP right now -- but it's inevitable that it will play out. The GOP chose their target well.
Perhaps this is one of those times where we could up our game, maybe even out of our own comfort zone. Maybe we could show up for *more* events, give more money, canvas more neighborhoods in the leadup to the 2024 elections. Because there is still more prejudice on the Left against transgender identity than we would hope.
And... just to emphasize the point, let's cast our mind back to the 2016 election, in which historically Democratic men voters lagged behind historically Democratic women voters in support of Hillary Clinton from start to finish. Even with all the GOP shenanigans, a Democratic voting bloc *without* latent sexism would have kept the Former Guy out of office, and the Supreme Court would be majority Liberal, and women would have the right to abortions.
Our prejudices on the Left matter, and we need to be proactive to stop playing into the GOP plan.

I'm assuming for the sake of this discussion that we can agree that the #MiddleClass is shrinking and weakening in the #USA. As fewer elders have less money and power, they are less complacent about the status quo.
But my subjective judgement is hampered by selection bias. I live in a #BlueBubble, and so course the people my age that I know are politically progressive.
Today's question: do people really become more #conservative as they age, and (if so) what causes it?
I just had a conversation with a friend in which we were mulling over the obvious truth that we seem to be getting more and more politically #progressive as the years go by.
I started wondering whether the conservative trend is correlated with a strong #MiddleClass in the US. Do #elders who have have #money and #power just want to defend it?

Guess I'll use this in the future. This way everyone can choose the platform they use for listening to the song I share.
The reason for Biden not to run isn't that he doesn't have his faculties. It isn't that he isn't doing popular things. It isn't that he has poor skills. It's a more subtle set of things.
First, and most important, he is at an age where he can't guarantee (even probabilistically) 5 more years of life. In an ordinary job, we don't fuss about that because they are not so important. But shifts if the balance of world power demand more than that. Look at what happened when RGB, who was healthy in most ways and quite a fighter, died at an inconvenient time. All the good things she did until the bitter end do not offset the nightmare of having her die at a time when we were in least control.
If Biden died, for example, very shortly before the election, there would be a constitutional crisis. Some would claim he had to simply be scratched from the ballot and that it needed to say only the GOP candidate and no one else. Others would push for the VP to step up and pick another VP, but the battle for VP is not the same as the battle for President. A VP is who the candidate trusts, not always who the public trusts. It would be a mess.
And if Biden died in office, the chain of succession would be a single person thin. The VP would become President, but if that VP were unavailable for surgery, or due to an accident, or due to a rogue action, the Speaker of the House (that's McCarthy now, in case people are not seeing this) would become President just like that and without any intervening question because our founders thought that it was a good idea to have that chain be party-blind. THAT is too horrible a fate.
And even beyond that, changing times need changing circumstances. That Biden has navigated well does not say he will continue to, in part because he is a centrist, and Climate weighs ever more heavily. Some progressives may jump ship and that will sabotage the future if they split the party . We need, if not an AOC, at least someone who is left of Biden on Climate and who will represent the youth of America, who increasingly see we are not adequately tending to a world they will have to live.
Finally, the Republicans are used to arguing about Biden. They are ready with their Hunter stories. There will be balloon stories, and stories of mislaid documents. They need someone they do not have such a well-worked narrative about, someone who will put them off balance having to have actual discussions on actual issues.
So the Dems must grow up and be a party not of saviors but of ideals. They must make their morality plain. They must get better at explaining who they are rather than ceding the narrative to the other side. Because another 4 years of Biden will not do that. It will assume all of those things go without saying and make us even more vulnerable at the end of that time than we already are.

Spain approves menstrual leave, teen abortion and trans laws
The Spanish parliament on Thursday approved legislation expanding abortion and transgender rights for teenagers, while making Spain the first country in Europe that will entitle workers to paid menstrual leave.
The driving force behind the two laws was Equality Minister Irene Montero, who belongs to the junior member in Spain’s left-wing coalition government, the “United We Can” Party.
The changes to sexual and reproductive rights mean that 16- and 17-year-olds in Spain can now undergo an abortion without parental consent. Period products will now be offered free in schools and prisons, while state-run health centers will do the same with hormonal contraceptives and the morning after pill. The menstrual leave measure allows workers suffering debilitating period pain to take paid time off.
