I've now visited #LosAngeles twice without once stepping foot in a car for the entire trip, entirely #CarFree (though I'm not sure whether a shuttle bus counts as a car for the 2nd trip).
I'm still surprised to find LA #PublicTransit so usable—though the Metro doesn't go everywhere I'd like it to, the bus coverage seems to really make up for that.
First visit I flew into #LAX and my map app told me to walk along a stroad for 45 minutes to a busstop, so I think I'll stick with Burbank for my domestic travel into LA. You can even use #Metrolink to get to and from #BUR!

Final thoughts on commuting with the REM. It’s efficient and clean. But I have to admit it’s a slug at Bonaventure station, but that station has always been an arduous schlepp through the metro system. First time on the REM, glaring issue is directional signage. It’s not obvious which quai to board, nor was there any signage at least to tell you which direction you’re going to even from the Terminus. Agree with this. It's ridiculous that I, someone who lives in an urban area and doesn't own a car, has to rent a car to go to the next cities to the east beyond the greater Vancouver area (Chilliwack, Abbotsford etc).
It doesn't need to be high speed rail, but at least regularly operating trains going in both directions would be a start.

So I caught an early bus home to get back in time to deliver a class online -- weird post-pandemic world. And the driver just committed the cardinal sin of public transport. It left early! And not by a little... 4 minutes! People complain about late buses and yes that's bad, but nothing is worse than a bus that leaves early and people miss it simply because they were on time.

More good news. Manchester launches the Bee Network tomorrow, when the first deregulated buses since Thatcher will roll out of their garages in Bolton and Wigan.
The Bee Network promises better, cheaper transport & fares capped across an integrated public transport system that combines buses and Metrolink trams.
(An aside: Nottingham fought deregulation and still controls the city's bus & tram network).

This week, I had a second go at collecting every single one of the Taipei MRT station stamps in one day.
What are station stamps? Many places in Taiwan (museums, railway stations, temples, even some restaurants), have unique rubber stamps that visitors can ink up and collect in a notebook. If you hunt around every MRT station in Taipei, you’ll find one. They’re usually kept close to the ticket barriers nearest the staffed help desk, and most are located outside the ticket barriers in the unpaid area of the station.
When the new TPass (a travel pass which gives you access to all MRT stations, train stations, buses and YouBikes across Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung and Taoyuan for NT$1200/month) was released, I decided to try and visit every single MRT station in one day. I failed. But that first attempt made me even more sure that it was possible, and determined to give it a second shot.
So that’s how I spent my day off this week.
It took me almost exactly 17 hours to collect every single stamp, and in the process of doing so, I travelled over 180km. It is not something I am ever planning on doing again. (But I’ve heard there will be a new stop on the red line in the not too distant future…)

Something I noticed when I lived in #Singapore was that some things are heavily subsidized to the point of being essentially free, but almost nothing is ever *entirely* free. MRT and bus fares, for example, are very cheap. An hour-long, cross-island trip across 20+ stops on the MRT metro costs SGD $2.13 today, or about USD $1.50 (even less for students or people with various concession passes). Last time I was there, this practice of charging some tiny amount for something that is basically free is used pretty often. Basic medicine is free under a socialized healthcare system, but everyone is charged a couple of bucks per prescription anyway.
I suspect this is a psychological trick to prevent a #tragedyOfTheCommons. The perceived difference between $0 and $1 is HUGE, because the latter is no longer “free”, and therefore scarce. Charging even a tiny amount probably helps to prevent systemic abuse.
The STM's *off-peak* ridership is now at 100% pre-pandemic levels.

Either way, it's probably a mistake to tear out existing tram networks, but building new ones may not be a good idea.
One way I've enjoyed contributing to the #FuckCars cause is by posting info about local elections, ballot initiatives, public meetings, etc. impacting the future of #PublicTransportation. I believe these are low-risk, high-reward opportunities to support #PublicTransit and change public discourse on the topic. So, I want to start a hashtag campaign, or announce a personal practice, intended to better target this info . . . 1/2
