Almost finished implementing webpush (push notifications) in pixelfed!
Somewhat ironically, they will ship first to the webUI/PWA and later to the official #pixelfedApp 😅 #webPush #pixelfed #pushNotifications

If you want to test push notifications in the simulator, you might want to check out "Control Room" (https://github.com/twostraws/ControlRoom) by @twostraws
It also does much more than "just" push notifications. You should check it out.
If you had told me in '07 that it would be '23 before #Apple got around to enabling #pushNotifications on the #web I'd have thrown my #iPhone at a wall. #safari #webkit #browser #webdev #standards #webpush #safariIsTheNewIE

@jacob @protonmail @ProtonCalendar good question.
Espechally since it's perfectly possible to use other systems to do the #push notifications.
@thatguyoverthere did that with a @nextcloud / #Nextcloud server and I personally do #PushNotifications for my #CLI tools via https://ntfy.sh which also has a nice app on @fdroidorg:

Fedilab might be good. Has it been audited lately, we don't know.
They made some changes, relating to google, that we didn't like to enable #pushNotifications a while back, which sort of made us recoil a bit at the time. Its possible that all apps do that now.
Push Notifications can be disabled so Fedilab is likely a fine option.
Here I am, trying to make a screenrecording to show my client that yes, background web-push notifications *do* work, and I cannot get it to work.
Turns out, when you make a screen recording, it sets notifications to do-no-disturb. Well dang.
Me: #ActivityPub is advertised as a replacement for Twitter, but the protocol allows for subscribing to notifications in a way that can replace #PushNotifications. Write an outline for a blog article that argues this point in the style of HackerNews.
Happy to share that Kieran Fraser and I will be presenting our work "Now, Later, Never: A Study of Urgency in Mobile Push-notifications" using EmPushy technology at the 20th International Conference on Advances in Mobile Computing & Multimedia Intelligence (MoMM2022).

Although I've now realised that I don't seem to get #PushNotifications from #Tusky
It seems I’m getting #PushNotifications from my old instance in the official #MastodonApp for #iPhone, despite having logged out and even revoked access to it after migrating. If I click the notification, the app openes but nothing is shown. What the heck? Is that expected? cc @Gargron
Especially on iOS, it is not easy to implement push notifications for small developers as it costs real money and dev accounts etc. Apps that poll for updates on iOS also get "put to sleep" by the OS.
So Pushover is actually quite a practical solution for small developers as the end user (individuals) pays a once-off cost per platform and then no further usage costs, with Pushover providing the actual push notification service. Devs can push from their app using command line, Python, Ruby, Go, Perl and PHP (examples given for these, but others can be possible too). Each user can receive up to 10,000 messages per month for free.
Pushover itself is not open source, but for a greater variety of push mechanisms via other 3rd party services such as Telegram, Discord, e-mail, IFTTT, Matrix, Pushbullet, Pushover as well, Mattermost, RocketChat, Slack, Teams, and more the free and open source Shoutrrr can be used. Shoutrrr is free and can be self-hosted and most of the services it pushes to are free too.

Hi Apps,
Thanks for your work and communications as it relates to #Fedilab.
We notice three different types of 'Distributors' for #PushNotifications. Which will Fedilab be using, #Gotify, #NoProvider2Push or the #Google one (#FirebaseCloudMessage)?
Thanks

A little rant about push notifications.

Push notifications are standardised in XMPP/Jabber.
The goal is to send a notification from the server to the client(s) (generally mobile), using a third party infrastructure.

Can we get push notifications for F-Droid apps without keeping the app continuously running in the background and draining battery?
