The decline of major #US freight railroads is a result of capitalist ownership and the adoption of cost-cutting measures.
Wall Street's focus on short-term gains undermines the viability of the railway system. The negative impact includes service delays, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and safety concerns.
Union Pacific Fired Him Rather Than Heed His Warnings of Dangerous Rail Conditions
Time and again, Johnny Taylor’s duty to keep the #rails safe from disaster conflicted with his employer’s desire to keep its #trains running as fast and as frequently as possible, putting his career and #family in peril.
It’s still a good time to nationalize the #railroad.
Railroad companies have penalized #workers for taking the time to make needed repairs and created a culture in which supervisors threaten and fire the very people hired to keep #trains running safely.
Regulators say they can’t stop this intimidation.

Today in Labor History November 7, 1907: Jesús García Corona saved the entire Mexican town of Nacozari de García by driving a burning train full of dynamite six kilometers (3.7 miles) away before it could explode. He was a railroad brakeman and died in the explosion.
RWU Announces Defense Campaign For Fired Rail Worker
Railroad Workers United (RWU) is initiating a public defense campaign for the unjustly dismissed locomotive engineer, Michael “Paul” Lindsey II.
You can find this sign as you go under the overpass along the Elkin and Alleghany rail trail located in Elkin, North Carolina
Construction on this line began in 1907, with the intent to connect the Richmond and Danville Railroad in Elkin, NC, with the Norfolk and Western line at Jefferson, NC,
However only 18 miles of track were ever laid, and the project was abandoned in 1931.
I realise I'm preaching to the choir on Mastodon - but if you live in #Ohio or #cincinnati you should say NO to #Issue22 and prevent a corrupt sale of your local #railway ! Great explainer from @alanthefisher here:

The Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border in February did have cameras, but Homendy said that because there are no federal standards for those cameras, investigators have only 20 minutes of footage from before that #derailment.

American railoads: we can't electrify because we're running freight! Sometimes doublestacked containers in well cars! Impossible! Might try a battery loco in 10 years?

Regulators Blast Union Pacific for Running Unsafe #Trains
The nation’s largest freight rail carrier failed to fix and continued to use faulty equipment, according to the Federal #Railroad Administration.
Managers reportedly pressured inspectors to leave the yard so they could keep freight moving.
How Norfolk Southern Is Addressing Blocked Train Crossings in Hammond, Indiana
The railroad company has delivered on early, short-term fixes for the trains blocking kids from getting to school, but some officials are skeptical it will follow through on bigger, permanent changes.
"Anyone who has seen Union Station knows that we do, in fact, have a history and knowledge as to how to build grand transportation of the sort that once connected a nation."
It pains me every time I think about it.
The #BuffaloCentralTerminal in #BuffaloNY is a beautiful, unique building with magnificent #architecture, but it was left to rot for years. Although #preservation work is being done, it's still a long way from being complete.
Last year I made my first trip to Elkin, North Carolina to explore the area. I ventured into the downtown area and noticed this bridge that was built in 1899 was listed a photo opportunity on their map.
With this still being an active rail line, I carefully framed this shot and gave it a vintage look in post processing.
Today in Labor History August 2, 1877: During the Great Upheaval strike wave sweeping the country, workers held a General Strike in Scranton. They attacked the mayor and fought with militiamen. 4 people died. The following year, the people of Scranton elected Terence Powderly, head of the Knights of Labor, as their new mayor.
I love this unauthorized #documentary of the #sfba #BART system, featuring beautiful golden-hour footage from a surreptitiously-attached GoPro on the front of the train, which hitched a ride from SFO to Pittsburg.
The documentary features voices from interesting people from BART’s past and present. I learned a lot about how the system came about, and how it’s run.
The ride is accompanied by the lovely, analog synth-heavy soundtrack of the game Manifold Garden, which invokes an ethereal, futuristic, Blade Runner esthetic as you glide in the first person through tunnels, bridges, and open air, always following the silver tracks ahead.
Kudos to Vincent Woo for this movie. It’s breathtaking. Watch it on your 4K TV.
Today in Labor History July 26, 1894: President Grover Cleveland created a Strike Committee to investigate the causes of the Pullman strike and the subsequent walkout by the American Railway Union, led by Eugene Debs. After four months, the commission absolved the strikers and placed the blame entirely on Pullman and the railroads for the conflict. Roughly 250,000 workers participated in the strike. And an estimated 70 workers died, mostly at the hands of cops and soldiers. To appease workers, the government came up with a new holiday, Labor Day, to commemorate the end of the Pullman Strike. However, President Cleveland had other interests in creating the new holiday. Rather than rewarding workers, his goal was to bury the history of the Haymarket Affair and the radical anarchist and socialist history of the labor movement by choosing any day other than May 1 as the new national labor holiday.
Tunnel Vision: An Unauthorized #BART Ride
Tunnel Vision: An Unauthorized BART Ride is a documentary film by local timelapse photographer Vincent Woo. Embark on a journey with a camera secretly attached to a BART train and ride through the arteries of the Bay Area. A hidden world is revealed through intersecting passageways, flashes of graffiti, and sections of track only witnessed by BART operators:

Additionally, here's the original #station #building for the #Dayton Union Station. This #photograph is from before the tracks were elevated. However, the station building itself was still used after the tracks were elevated. You may also see some electric #streetcar tracks in the roadway.
Here's some #beforeandafter images from #Dayton Union #Station in #Ohio. Although the station building has been torn down for #parking, the platforms are still there, although significantly overgrown and unmaintained. This station is basically within #Sinclair Community College's campus.
"Nevada Northern No. 93 is a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1909 for the American Smelters Securities Co. to haul ore trains on the Nevada Northern Railway." (Ely, Nevada, 10/4/2019.)
Street art in the old Donner Summit / Truckee train tunnel / snowsheds. These abandon tunnels and snowsheds are on the original route through the Sierra of the old Transcontinental Railway (1869). The UP recently repurposed the abandon tunnels as a service road. Street art is allowed (kind of a gray area) inside, but prohibited outside of the tunnels / snowsheds.

Despite the overwhelming weight of #government #oppression against #unhoused people that i briefly touched on above, i think we have a pretty good chance of keeping some space to live in this case— it is #railroad land, and the #Minneapolis #ParksAndRecreation employee John or Jon is going out of his way to push the railroad to go along with the city's plans for total elimination.
A little bit of pressure could convince parks to stay in their lane, and #BNSF truly, profoundly, doesn't care.
Lobbying the railroad to displace houseless people is a horrifying use of Parks resources. Morality, empathy, and human decency aside— is it really policy to assist the city in its campaign of incessant displacement until people are forced back onto park land?
