Loving “The Priory of the Orange Tree.” Great world building, compelling narrative and characters, and good to see some fantasy cliches turned on their head. It seems rushed somehow, though; I wonder if it could have been two volumes with a little less speeding through some of the story. I read The Language of Roses by Heather Rose Jones, also author of the Alpennia series. It's a feminist, L(gbtqi)A, retelling of the French literary fairytale La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast), in which beauty is the power of different types of love and the beast is coercion and domestic abuse (whether familial or marital). It retains the fairytale setting and plot alterations are expertly done. I didn't work out what was going on until about a third of the way through, but our heroine has to wait even longer. The lesbian side-couple are sweet, and the heroine's aromantic nature is given its due. A very good read and recommended to people who like well-written retellings.

I've fallen out of my reading kick lately. Does anyone have a book reccomendation? Maybe something with a crafty main character. I've not been able to knit much this week and would love to live vicariously through a story!

6-10: How would you describe your story, and why?
Since my #WIP is book two of the "Heavy Metal" #SciFi #mystery quartet, I'll describe the series as a whole:
A glint of glitter amid cyberpunk's grunge.
Although the #books deal with some serious themes--#disability, #ClimateChange, and the broken #healthcare system--they maintain a sense of humor.
Why?
Because I got tired of cyberpunk taking itself so dang seriously with nihilistic urban gloom.
Because the genre needs more substantive female protagonists, not just supporting sirens.
Because I have a shameless obsession with classic #rock #music (and incorporated it right into the plot, homage to the genre's #80s aesthetic).
The stories are a little quirky, but #writing them (and hopefully #reading them, too) is a lot of fun.
Finally finished #Hyperion. Really enjoyed it, perhaps with the exception of the rather problematic relationship of the protagonists. (Oh we’re using relativistic time dilation to get a young girl past the age of consent? Cool. Cool cool cool cool.) Anybidy have #booksuggestions for something to pick up next?

Swain Olaf's Son encounters the witch Frakork and her grandson Olvir Rosta. When he returns home to tell his father, he meets Swain Briostreip, who warns "Swain shall be the bane of Swain."
Smith's first story about Swain the Viking, based on the Orkneyinga saga of northern Scotland, is an action-packed swashbuckler from the start.
My favourite dog with his favourite toy sitting in my favourite chair in my favourite reading space.

If you live in Massachusetts, you can sign up for a free e-library card from the Boston Public Library. You don't even have to live in Boston!
With an e-card from BPL, you can access literally thousands of books and other digital goodies for free through their app or your preferred e-library app! (Hoopla is my personal favorite.)

As a reader who really delights in connecting with people over books they love, it's a big loss to me that book-tracking sites and apps don't let you visibly mark the number of times you've read a title. I love rereading books, I find it so comforting. And it would be so cool to read some profile on a book site and realize we not only love the same book, but we reread it every year or two, too.
Wondering if we can't crowdfund some press for a trans OwnVoices book written by a disabled transmasc?

I am currently reading two episodic or essay based books at the same time:
1) the Met Museum catalogue for the Juan de Pareja exhibit, with fascinating essays on art, on Afro-Hispanic communities in 16th C Spain and on the role of slaves in early Renaissance Europe.
2) ebook of Graeber's and Wengrow's The Dawn of Everything, not as cogent as Graeber's Debt but nonetheless just as radical in taking down conventional "wisdom."

Is anyone out there interested in being a part of a Contrarian Barbarian's Book Club where we read whatever the hell we want individually and meet up once a month on the newly formed Contrarian Barbarian Discord server to tell each other about it for a couple of minutes each and then discuss? (All genres/fiction/non-fiction on the table.)
The key focus would be sharing books we love with other people in a positive way. It'd have the diehard rule that if you freakin' love a thing, no one can be negative about it because that would be raining on your parade and your parade is spectacular dammit!
