Loving “The Priory of the Orange Tree.” Great world building, compelling narrative and characters, and good to see some fantasy cliches turned on their head. It seems rushed somehow, though; I wonder if it could have been two volumes with a little less speeding through some of the story. I read The Language of Roses by Heather Rose Jones, also author of the Alpennia series. It's a feminist, L(gbtqi)A, retelling of the French literary fairytale La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast), in which beauty is the power of different types of love and the beast is coercion and domestic abuse (whether familial or marital). It retains the fairytale setting and plot alterations are expertly done. I didn't work out what was going on until about a third of the way through, but our heroine has to wait even longer. The lesbian side-couple are sweet, and the heroine's aromantic nature is given its due. A very good read and recommended to people who like well-written retellings.

When I'm not nerding out about those, I'm working on #HomeImprovement. My wife dreams of #homesteading, so I'm helping her with #gardening and planning to raise a #chicken or two

A young, dark-haired woman dressed in an outfit with a burgundy, short-sleeved top, white sash, and long bluish-black skirt that catches the burgundy in highlights, sits sideways in a cream armchair with legs dangling over one arm of the chair reading a book. To the left is a small table with a flowered cup and a tall vase of vase of greenery and small flowers.

The #Artist — by Stanley Kunitz
His paintings grew darker every year.
They filled the walls, they filled the room;
eventually they filled his world -
all but the ravishment.
When voices faded, he would rush to hear
the scratched soul of Mozart
endlessly in gyre.
Back and forth, back and forth,
he paced the paint-smeared floor,
diminishing in size each time he turned,
trapped in his monumental void,
raving against his adversaries…

6-10: How would you describe your story, and why?

Since my #WIP is book two of the "Heavy Metal" #SciFi #mystery quartet, I'll describe the series as a whole:

A glint of glitter amid cyberpunk's grunge.

Although the #books deal with some serious themes--#disability, #ClimateChange, and the broken #healthcare system--they maintain a sense of humor.

Why?

Because I got tired of cyberpunk taking itself so dang seriously with nihilistic urban gloom.

Because the genre needs more substantive female protagonists, not just supporting sirens.

Because I have a shameless obsession with classic #rock #music (and incorporated it right into the plot, homage to the genre's #80s aesthetic).

The stories are a little quirky, but #writing them (and hopefully #reading them, too) is a lot of fun.

Finally finished #Hyperion. Really enjoyed it, perhaps with the exception of the rather problematic relationship of the protagonists. As a reader who really delights in connecting with people over books they love, it's a big loss to me that book-tracking sites and apps don't let you visibly mark the number of times you've read a title. I love rereading books, I find it so comforting. And it would be so cool to read some profile on a book site and realize we not only love the same book, but we reread it every year or two, too.

Topic: Contrarian Barbarian's Book Club (Of greatness!)

@bookstodon I'm popping this up once more, just in case anyone else wants to join before our first meeting in late June.

Is anyone out there interested in being a part of a Contrarian Barbarian's Book Club where we read whatever the hell we want individually and meet up once a month on the newly formed Contrarian Barbarian Discord server to tell each other about it for a couple of minutes each and then discuss? (All genres/fiction/non-fiction on the table.)

The key focus would be sharing books we love with other people in a positive way. It'd have the diehard rule that if you freakin' love a thing, no one can be negative about it because that would be raining on your parade and your parade is spectacular dammit!

All time zones welcome to say hi!

LGBTQIA++, disability and neurodivergent friendly, with a structure with set rules of conduct--meaning that boorishness (repeatedly talking/typing over people and not respecting boundaries) or trollishness gets booted with the might of Gandalf warding off the Balrog.

If you like the sound of this, reply to this and tell me about the book you love most with the power of the sun.

We've already got a bunch of amazing people and the more the merrier! :blobsmilehappyeyes:
