Incidentally, last Wednesday it was 50 years since I last had a drink.
They told me the first day that I didn't actually have to drink. That was a marvelous discovery then, and it still is.
I'm trying out "Would you say that to a student?" as my new thought-stopping phrase when I fall into a pit of #cptsd self-loathing.
So far, it's been enlightening. It's like a shortcut to thinking like a non-traumatized person, with all the normal self-defense and healthy rationalization instincts.
It’s been 8 years since I surrendered and asked for help at an early morning AA meeting. 2,922 days, one at a time, of living life on life’s terms.
Today I’m happy, healthy, and free.
Last night, I told my home group that I needed help.
Today, a home group member offered it.
My first instinct was to refuse it.
I made a more skillful choice and enjoyed having Thai food with him and talking about my grief.

Is it my sober Jesus year? And what is required if so? Lol
A #CradleCatholic. A #LapsedCatholic? As a wee lad, I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. An #ExcludedCatholic? I explored other practices and faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early #ChurchHistory. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the #PopeFrancisGeneration. I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.

Did you ever stop and think
Drink rots godly minds
It’s exhausting and hard for me to talk with drunks now — particularly when I love them. Probably because I remember how it is on that side.
So, still, I listen. As others did for me. Because if they don’t talk, they’ll drink more, feel forgotten. They won’t get more sober if I hang up.
But now I’m a very tired rabbit.
I’m a year and a half #sober today — and it’s a day I had one of my hardest moments. Like, there was alcohol within reach (damn parklet). I started feeling really angry at those folks who could enjoy a cold beer outside.
But I’m back home with a non-alcoholic Black Butte Porter and the person I promised my sobriety to.
So, you know, we get by. We live to not drink another day.

Whenever I wake up with a bad sinus headache, I marvel that I used to choose the morning headache lifestyle through drinking.
When I was a drunk, I remember reading how Tom Waits had gone sober. I was so disappointed. How could Mr Jockey Full of Bourbon not still be tossing them back with me?
But now that I'm #sober— damn — it’s so heartening.
An ex of mine panicked during one of my early attempts. She said it was “stupid.” Shoulda’ never listened to her.
When people decide to kick the booze, you gotta support them, know they're doing it to be better, even if it changes your image of them. #RecoveryPosse

“The Man Who Fell to Earth” is an excellent read. I’d seen the film ages ago and didn’t know what to expect. The set-up is the same, though it unfolds differently. It is a deeply existential and elegiac “sci-fi” novel filled with lovely references to literature and mythology. I did not realize it would be so much about alcoholism either. My brain is full now, my heart a little broken. 1/2

My local donut shop is around the cornet from one of many local liquor stores. I’m grateful that my 10 AM stop is the donut shop and not the liquor store.
For real, curating what comes into my brain helps keep me #sober.
As a person with a long history of trying to change what I can't change.
I stayed up way too late watching performances by The Cure with the girl.
Totally worthwhile and better than the things I used to do that kept me up nights.
But I still feel wasted today.
I heard this in my homegroup today:
"Drinking became like a sad song I was singing to myself."

30 years ago, I got sober because drinking was interfering with my recovery.
I may write more about this later today. For now, everything I wrote 10 years ago, on my 20th anniversary, remains true today:

Hi Marie, I guess you could say I gave up drinking and am on the other side. I have a rich full life including lots of time with dear friends who either don't drink or don't drink around me.

So much has happened in my personal life this past year, I can hardly believe I survived, but I did. Through it all, I was present & available for my family, friends, co-workers & recovery family.
