when a person who is running for office says "SCOTUS needs ethics reform to maintain legitimacy", that person is saying that there is some sort of legitimacy to maintain.
SCOTUS is illegitimate. Period.
3 of the justices were appointed by a president who is now an indicted criminal and will likely be found guilty of treason.
You can't call yourself "far left" and then argue that the system can be reformed.
The system was designed to be what it is now. Tear it down.

But a new report by the UCLA School of Law Bail Practicum and the UC Berkeley School of Law Policy Advocacy Clinic presents no evidence that the decision has made cash bail more affordable for those accused of crimes or decreased the use of pretrial detention.
With the Humphrey decision, many thought that we would finally see relief for Californians, particularly Black, brown and indigenous people who are subject to targeted policing and more likely to be held pretrial.

Zudem müssen viele der Schlupflöcher geschlossen werden, es kann nicht sein, dass die obersten Schichten unter 5% Steuern auf das Erbe zahlen.

A final point I hope! Was the #FarRight the "dog that did not bark" in #LocalElections2023 and, if so, why? Voting for #Reform and #UKip was very much lower than implied by recent opinion polls. Either the #FarRight are unable or unwilling to vote or they are voting #Conservative. In the latter case the #Conservatives are in even more trouble than they realise because they will have exhausted the potential of the tactics pursued by #SuellaBraverman and #LeeAnderson.
The #Conservative share in opinion polls appears to have moved up from around 20% to a bit below 30% - reducing the likelihood of a landslide defeat for them in the #UKGeneralElection2024. This reflects the competence factor. #votersuppression does appear to have some effect against #Labour but did not work at all against the #libdems. Culture wars do not appear to have had any effect. The results for #Reform and #UKip suggest the #FarRight vote has collapsed.

What troubles me even more than the #impropriety of the #influence peddling #Justice #Thomas accepts, is that the rest of the justices have never, ever, to my knowledge made a stink about it. Zip. Zero. Nada.
This impresses me as a #systemic problem. A #cabal of #elite enthusiastically turning their heads to the improprieties of their fellows, to preserve the #privilege they are all benefitting from.
If the one is implicated, all must be implicated, if we are to see any chance at #reform. Because, as concerns the #SupremeCourt, change can only come from the top.
So, please. Don’t look down your nose at Clarence Thomas, while ignoring the fact that the other justices are not only enabling his behavior, but most likely partaking in it to varying degrees as well.
Be loud. Hold them all to account.

Der EuGH will Vorabentscheidungsverfahren in bestimmten Bereichen (Mehrwertsteuer, Fluggastrecht, Zollkodex, Verbrauchssteuern u.a.) an das EuG verlagern, um Entlastung zu erreichen.
Die Zahl der Vorabentscheidungsverfahren stieg stetig an, so dass die Bearbeitungszeit immer länger wurde. Dauerte ein Vorabentscheidungsverfahren am EuGH 2016 noch 15 Monate, waren es 2021 schon 16,7 Monate, eine Steigerung um elf Prozent in fünf Jahren.

If no reasonable, detailed & verifiable qualification is needed to become a member of government, even if you're an extremist, rapist, liar, fraudster, traitor, etc a lot of things went seriously wrong & need to be worked on, in an age, when laws, rules, norms & values seem to be no longer understood as natural requirement to hold public office as much as they were at the time of authoring the Declaration of Independendence & the Constitution.

Our recent investigation into the hospice industry pointed out, among many other things, that practically anyone can open a #hospice.
Reporter Ava Kofman came across hospices owned by vacation-rental superhosts, a man convicted of drug distribution & a defense attorney (who once represented a hospice employee convicted of fraud and was later investigated for hospice fraud himself).

We'd not have a wide party all the way from cautious supporters of status quo to wilds of #englishNationalism - instead we'd have parliament including smaller parties
like #reform (nativists), maybe pro-business party and socially conservative party (possibly with an islamic flavour)
Each smaller party would be more rigidly centred on a core & fight for that core
Latest #ukOpinionPoll has #Conservatives at just 20%, the lowest they have been since #Sunak took over, with #Labour on 47% #reform (the #nativist right-wing successor to #ukip) uptick to 9% as despairing #littleEnglanders look for a new home
