Had a conversation today with a friend of mine who has recently found god. I love my friend, they are an amazing person, but it was an infuriating conversation.
Why do people to come to religion or rediscover religion later in life have be so evangelical about it?
I’m an atheist. I have been since I was a teen. But I don’t weave it into every conversation.
For context, I was complaining about my shitty love life which has been a topic of conversation between us before. And his solution was that I should pray about it. Also, that I should resign myself to not finding love because that’s when miracles happen.
I don’t care if anyone is religious, I appreciated him saying he would pray for me (that’s like anyone saying they’ll hold you in their thoughts), and I’m glad that he’s found something that makes his life better.
But just, maybe, don’t be so heavy handed with it when talking to someone who is irreligious.

Instead of violating unjust laws, protestors follow the law (but in a way that undermines its very rationale).
Examples include atheists who have used laws to keep ‘pornography’ out of schools to request that the Bible be banned, and the Satanic Temple, which has used rules permitting religious after-school clubs to found clubs for young Satanists.

Jesus' fan club paid an unexpected visit to my home today. Apparently, "I'm an atheist & you're no more likely to change that about me than I am to change your beliefs" wasn't convincing enough.
They caught me in the middle of hauling my new door around to the back of my house. So I pulled out the cancer card. "I don't mean to be rude, but as you can see, I'm in the middle of work. I have cancer & I'm feeling well enough to do this today. I can't stop & chat or I won't be able to get this done. Have a nice day."
They still didn't leave, so I turned around & went back inside for some water, which I needed anyhow. Now they're gone.
If they give me the plague because they've been going door to door, then I hope their god is real & he smites them for endangering me. Even if they weren't religious, I do not appreciate unexpected guests. That used up precious spell slots I needed for the day.
Please let the drugs kick in so I can get this done.

in particular, what struck me just now is that last line and how I'm significantly less bothered by that than I am by Christians telling me that G?d has a plan for me, that G?d made me the way I am for a reason.
and I think the difference comes down to the line before it, because who I was put on this earth to be is within my power. it's not that I don't believe in fate, either; I just refuse to believe that G?d decided to give people cognitive dissonance without giving them the means of resolving it however they choose.

As many of us who grew up in evangelical families can attest, whippings and outright beatings have long been doled out in devout evangelical Christian households as a way of raising children "right" — and the beatings extended to (and continue in) public schools in parts of the country dominated by white evangelical culture.
It's no accident that, in the US, these are the areas defending corporal punishment of children.

Mormon mother Ruby Franke of Utah (husband once taught at Brigham Young University) became quite a guru on strict parenting with a YouTube channel that over 2 million people followed. Now she's been arrested, and her shockingly abusive behavior to her children has been discovered — using duct tape to confine at least one child, starving that child so that he needed hospital care for emaciation.

Here's my understanding of #Christian theodicies.
1. Free Will: Humans with free will do evil and/or cause suffering.
2. Justice: Evil humans deserve to suffer.
3. Broken World: As a result of free will(Adam & Eve), creation is broken and produces evil and suffering.
4. Utilitarian: Suffering has a purpose (to draw us near to God, to not do that thing, or Joseph taking one for the team).
5. Irenaean: Evil/Suffering exists as a contrast to reveal God to us.
6. Mystery: Some suffering we'll never know
