Remote work impact shows up in US transportation sector as emissions level off in 2022:
Jet fuel ⬆️ 14%
Gasoline ⬇️ by less than 1%
Diesel ⬆️ 2%
"This slower increase in emissions [vs 2021] can be attributed to the slowing economic recovery from COVID-19-related remote work and lifestyle changes."
🏡 If all those who can work from home do so 3 days/week, oil demand will be fall by 500k barrels per day (IEA)
https://www.eia.gov/environment/emissions/carbon/pdf/2022_Emissions_Report.pdf

Perhaps the problem is less about employees wearing pajama pants and more about managers struggling to apply an outdated framework to how people actually want to live and work in 2023.

After reviewing "Remote collaboration fuses fewer breakthrough ideas" more thoroughly, I believe it should be retracted. Here is a write-up of why this is the case:
10 Essential Skills for Remote Team Collaboration https://tinyurl.com/4zfrn7kr
There is so much we can do, so much we can offer to each other, to the planet, to our children, to our families, if we just all chose to. As a person still coviding, I see the potential--if we used the preventatives-- for so much good: health and wellness added, life years added, spiritual things like empathy and humanity, safety, value, love, even helping the planet by reducing travel and commutes-- That's the side I want to be on. #MaskUp #cleantheair #RemoteWork #LetItBeginWithMe
Not a mention of COVID here or how going back to the office entails risks from public transportation and possible exposure in an office environment that might well discourage any reminder that there's a virus still out there that can change your life.

There is an article on a site I won't link to, but it talks about libraries (community, university, etc) being a great location for remote work.
I haven't done it yet but I agree it makes sense. I have a close friend who frequently works at a university library.
I'm fairly covid cautious right now, so I'll probably wait a bit, but I'm looking forward to trying it at my local community library.
Test it out for yourself & let us know what you think!

Built with 💚 by DevSeed Labs 🧪
We've been using Co₂ordinate for almost a year now, planning team meetings and who to send to conferences. We hope by sharing, other organizations will find it useful to help with planning travel or bringing teams together.
#emissions #climatechange #airtravel #remotework
🛠️ How does it work? Select your team members, and Co₂ordinate will rank the best places to meet based on flight-related GHG emissions. It's all about making smarter, greener choices!
#ghg #co2 #cop28 #climatechange #airtravel #remotework

We built Co₂ordinate to help our own team find the most CO₂ efficient places to meet, but decided others might find it useful as well.
#ghg #co2 #cop28 #climatechange #airtravel #remotework

🌐 We're a global team, and while virtual meetings are great, nothing beats face-to-face interactions. But how do we meet responsibly with less environmental impact?
#ghg #co2 #cop28 #climatechange #airtravel #remotework #remoteteams

✈️ Did you know? A round trip from London to New York emits 2 tons of CO₂. That's a year's worth of emissions for an average person in India! It's high time we rethink our travel habits. 🌏 https://developmentseed.org/blog/2023-10-11-co2ordinate
#ghg #co2 #cop28 #climatechange #airtravel #remotework

I've heard about people secretly holding down 2+ #tech jobs simultaneously
I don't blame the worker; that's either an alarm that quality work isn't rewarded with proper pay or its flat out bad management
Or maybe that's just how fucky stuff works in the US that a person feels it necessary to grind like that
My only problem is management will never be reflective and instead just blame #remotework
Either way, I'm done with "neighbor shaming" and happy to point my finger directly at "the man"

For #InformationWorkers -#RemoteWork made sense waaay before COVID.
Now 'leadership' (i.e. people that don't do 'real' work) want to pretend that sitting in an office cube (and working remotely) - is somehow better than doing the very same thing from home.
Better for whom?
Seeing #ButtsInChairs is not 'management'.
“An Amazon exec says it’s time for workers to ‘disagree and commit’ to an office return: ‘I don’t have data to back it up, but I know it’s better’”
Yeah. You don't have data to back it up. Because data doesn't back it up.
People are welcome to prefer working in an office. People are welcome to do it. But people who believe it is generally better and that everyone should have to are—every last one of them—dickheads.
#RemoteWork #RTO #ReturnToOffice

I've read through this paper a couple times and started looking at its data.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06767-1
I'm predicting it now before I get further into reviewing this: this paper is wrong for all the reasons you'd suspect and isn't going to hold up to any scrutiny.
But managers and non-scientists everywhere are going to use it to reign in remote workers and say that it's "supported by the science".

Can Microsoft #Teams not imagine that you would want to share your screen in a meeting for any reason other than showing a presentation?
I share my screen multiple times per day (we're a fully remote team, so Teams is our communication medium), and I think I've shown a presentation maybe one time out of ten thousand.
No. We show code, or we go through Jira boards and open multiple tabs for different stories and epics we want to look at. All of which are at the top of the screen. Exactly where that infernal "You are sharing your screen" bar is. The bar that you cannot hide, and you cannot dock anywhere but the top of the screen.
So when I'm driving our planning sessions, I have to work around that by un-maximising (restoring) my browser window, and then moving and sizing it so that it's ALMOST maximised, but there's just enough space above it so the sharing bar doesn't hide my tabs.
Come on, #Microsoft. You can do better. :P
When systems are failing, I must stress the power of alternatives. They have been huge in my life. #WorkFromHome #RemoteWork #VirtualSchool #VirtualEvents are such alternatives, and I have to say, they have been better than I imagined and a sanctuary in these times with #Covid amongst other things. To me, they are a way to stand up for your health and wellbeing. @whn has a nice writeup on them https://whn.global/newsletter/work-from-home-revolution/

Hello folks, My semester exams just ended and I would love to gain some work experience during this semester break.
I'm looking for internships or part-time jobs in Qt/C++ or some devops jobs. I am a #KDE contributor and over the past year worked on implementing features, automating CI in @tokodon and also work on some #plasma 6 bugs. I would like to apply my skills and little experience to the aid of any organisation seeking such talent.
So it seems orgs are surprised that their #old workers have a stronger pref for #remotework than the #young, the young’uns being assumed to be ’digital nomads’ and all that.
Hint: Apart from generally having nicer homes to work from, us mature ppl might see through the ”The company is your family, the office is a cozy home - look, we have cookies!” bullshit to a (-n even) higher degree.
#Officework is for F2F meets or security reasons - I’m past being scenography for some interior decorator.

Next was a fantastic talk by John Fernald on productivity during and after the pandemic at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. This is a thoroughly unique take on productivity changes, and Fernald provides compelling evidence that a lot of the wild changes that were reported during the pandemic were likely due to capital deepening and labor composition rather than remote work. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzTtSHH8cRs (4/12) #economics #RemoteWork

9am and on. Familiar territories and uncanny valleys. Swapping coffee for tea earlier than usual, to cope with a certain unpleasant restlessness. Also, listening to the machine fans singing under load, and briefly reading through messages of old colleagues leaving old ships behind too. (Even years later, moving on feels like a slow process that sometimes makes itself visible again.)

"In the ongoing, heated debate about the costs and benefits of #RemoteWork, a pivotal advantage often goes underappreciated. The ability to quickly transition a workforce to remote work when necessary provides firms with an important form of flexibility — akin to an insurance policy. And that sort of flexibility will only become more critical in a warming world, where #ExtremeWeather is (sadly) becoming more common."
