In my zeal not to be That Reviewer I just spent almost three hours going over a short paper. I insist on doing a deep dive to ensure I understand what they’re doing, and that entails looking up nomenclature if it’s not my domain. All too easy to go down rabbit holes while recursively looking up terms, but ChatGPT is super helpful as a personal tutor to explain concepts and why they’re useful. #research #reviewing

Anthrobots were derived from the adult human lung, which self-constructed into a multicellular motile biobot after being cultured. They were found to be capable of traversing, and inducing rapid repair of scratches in cultured human neural cell sheets in vitro. This suggests the potential for personalized regenerative medicine.

An interesting theory.

"Here's the thinking: when dinosaurs ruled Earth, it was necessary for the much smaller mammals to be able to reproduce quickly in order to survive, which means the genes for longer lifespans may have been discarded as evolution progressed."

“…the Fediverse’ provides tools and technologies that are ideally suited to bring scholarly societies out of their digital caves and into the 21st century.”

“The root of their names contains their essential function, as described in 1660 for one of the first such societies, the Royal Society:

“Their first purpose was no more, then onely the satisfaction of breathing a freer air, and of conversing in quiet one with another, without being ingag’d in the passions, and madness of that dismal Age”.

Jane Cooke Wright is a pioneering cancer researcher and surgeon. Not only did she contribute a lot to chemotherapy, she developed a drug to treat breast/skin cancer.

AND if that wasn’t enough, she did something extraordinary for humans and animals alike. She figured out how to use human skin tissue for testing instead of using mice.

"Long COVID Research Is a Bit of a Mess"

“For the past three years, much of the media and discussion around long COVID has treated the post-viral condition as an entirely new illness, a view that has been reflected in its research …

Chronic fatigue syndrome – or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) – is the elephant in the long COVID room. For the past three years, much of the media and discussion around long COVID has treated the post-viral condition as an entirely new illness, a view that has been reflected in its research; scientists from around the world have scrambled to study the disease from scratch.

But if ME had been studied more thoroughly – or even just believed – years ago, much of the foundational work of long COVID research may already have been achieved. That’s certainly the belief of many of those suffering from ME, who often live exceptionally stationary lives due to their condition. Some are bed-bound, quite literally, for decades.

“Half of long COVID symptoms are basically equivalent to ME symptoms,” says Chris Ponting, a professor at the University of Edinburgh’s Medical Research Council Human Genetics Unit and lead investigator of its Decode ME project.

Innsbruck Scientists led by Peter Zoller have developed a new tool for measuring #entanglement in many-body systems and demonstrated it in experiments.

The method enables the study of previously inaccessible physical phenomena and could contribute to a better understanding of quantum materials.

The work has now been published in @Nature

The temperature profiles obtained by the researchers show that particles that interact strongly with the environment are “hot” (red) and those that interact little are “cold” (blue). Entanglement is therefore large where the interaction between particles is strong.

How does having attachment relationships to both mothers and fathers affect children’s socioemotional and cognitive outcomes?

To start, children who had secure attachment with both parents were likely to experience fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and to exhibit better language skills than kids with one or no secure attachment relationships.

The more secure attachments the better ❤️

Internet use does not appear to harm mental health, study finds. Exciting to see the study out, but I emphasize the word "appear".
Andrew Przybylsk, professor at the institute, said that the data necessary to establish a causal connection was “absent” without more cooperation from tech companies. If apps do harm mental health, only the companies that build them have the user data that could prove it, he said. https://www.ft.com/content/e5dcdbf4-a914-4216-b212-ec1b362692e2

This is a nice article summarizing some cool #security #research on fingerprint #biometrics sensors in Windows laptops. They checked three popular sensors, and found that neither of them provided meaningful security. One didn't use any crypto at all, one rolled their own crypto badly, and one used Microsofts secure protocol, but left open a big wide backdoor by still allowing a number of things without authentication. Overall, a sad picture, albeit not a surprising one.

Question:
Is any researcher or investigative #journalist #journalists looking into the suicide rate for #MAGA followers?

We know anecdotally that #DomesticViolence and #MAGA appears connected. (And, #research really, really ought to try to get a better handle on that.) #DV is associated with depression.

I am not trying to solve any great equation. I believe the rise of #AntiDemocratic thought is a culmination of many things. I am informally (meaning, I do not intend at this time to turn it into a research question) looking at MAGA in terms of #HumanDevelopment with a strong emphasis on #Womens development. (Meaning why do women become entangled with MAGA?)

We can read great books like *On Tyranny* and philosophers like #HannaArendt to see how #AntiDemocratic #Authoritarianism appeals to some. I'm curious why it appeals to some. One argument states it appeals because it's easy; it gives easy answers. But desiring and/or accepting easy answers strongly indicates there is a connection to human development.

Developmentally, MAGA perhaps could be viewed as an impetus for an awaking of knowledge about self... and, age does not matter here because such an awakening can happen late in life if there is some sort of break. Following the 'break" and being in a newly subjectivist area of development, the person starts to see they are knowers; that they themselves are experts. Subjectivist knowers begin to see truth as intuitive, something where they have the expertise within them and they only need to "listen to their gut." (One can see how MAGA gives people a sense of confirmation of expertise.) But development is not easy to go through, and development is neither linear nor does it follow a prescribed time table. It is known people can have problems in these stages because of the stresses caused. (Note: there are stages of human development beyond subjectivist knowing; but perhaps MAGA gets stuck or falls back within stages, as researchers show happens.)

Hence, my question: if there is a high prevalence of #DV , that prevalence indicates there may also be a high prevalence of depression. Given #MAGA preference for violence, I am wondering how high is suicide amongst MAGA followers? (And, I am counting a willingness to break the law or die for the cause a form of self-harm.)

I'm copying a public post below from an interesting Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Data Science at UNCC (not a medical doctor or psychologist).

Everything he is discussing is TENTATIVE but very interesting. I'm sending this out now because there is so little in the popular press about what can actually be done to help people with brain fog and other Long COVID symptoms. The research is still very early, and of course medical professionals should be consulted.

1) The article link from Nature Magazine describes brain damage caused by SARS-CoV-2 related to cell death and especially to synapse loss, leading to cognitive impairment.

2) The study in Bioelectric Medicine is extremely small, yet shows the potential of nicotine patches in the treatment of Long COVID symptoms including brain fog. (Another paper from the same publication also goes into why nicotine might help with Long COVID: https://bioelecmed.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s42234-023-00104-7 )

3) He then points to a study on the NIH PubMed site reporting the encouragement of synapse growth from psilocybin.

4) A comment in the discussion thread also links to a British Medical Journal article on Metformin improving Long COVID symptoms ( https://www.bmj.com/content/381/bmj.p1306 )

There's further speculation in the discussion thread that other psychoactive substances might be helpful. There are perhaps AI bots in the discussion thread discussing psilocybin microdosing, so be aware of that and maybe not get excited that so many "people" are discussing it.

…HUH. Long-COVID destroys synapses, and is a major contributor to the brainfog. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41380-022-01786-2

This goes some way to shining a light on the promising results they've been seeing in testing nicotine patches as treatment for long covid: nicotine effects synapse formation and receptivity (tests using patches because they don't habit-form and aren't, y'know, SMOKE [https://bioelecmed.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s42234-023-00104-7]).

But what's super interesting to me is that another thing that's also been shown to encourage synapse growth? Is psilocybin.

Great analysis by David Tuller, re: recent Long Covid opinion piece in Time magazine! From the virology blog:

"Column in Time Magazine Calls for Halt to Biomedical Long Covid Research"

How can those authors argue with a straight face that we should stop all biomedical research for Long Covid because we haven't found enough answers from ME/CFS research? 😳

ME/CFS research has been underfunded for *years*! 😠

https://virology.ws/2023/11/21/trial-by-error-column-in-time-calls-for-halt-to-biomedical-long-covid-research/

@mecfs
@longcovid

#LongCovid #MEcfs #Research #MedMastodon

The authors do not point out that, for decades, federal agencies have devoted only paltry amounts to biomedical research for ME/CFS. They also fail to mention the disproportionate investment in research on psycho-behavioral interventions, like the discredited PACE trial and related studies, as well as the pathetic results from this body of research. Instead, they insist that biomedical research into long Covid is probably going to prove to be a useless endeavor. As they write: “Why is this research unlikely to be productive? Because either there is nothing to find, or currently available tools are insufficient to detect and validate mechanisms behind the myriad of symptoms.”

The authors provide no real evidence to support their assertion that there might be “nothing to find”—or at least, if there is something, that it cannot be identified with current technology. The latter sounds like this: “Gee, this is hard, let’s stop looking.” I have not previously heard this sort of defeatist view advanced as a reason to abandon biomedical research involving other complicated illnesses.

I often hear researchers worry (understandably) about declining levels of public trust in science.

But there is a bigger social issue here: New polling finds declining levels of public trust in pretty much *everyone*. Scientists, police, business leaders, journalists & religious leaders all registered notable declines over the past 5 years.

https://www.pewresearch.org/science/2023/11/14/confidence-in-scientists-medical-scientists-and-other-groups-and-institutions-in-society/ #science #politics #research

Roughly three-quarters of Americans say they have a great deal or a fair amount of confidence in medical scientists (77%), the military (74%) and scientists (73%) to act in the public’s best interests. These three groups receive the highest ratings of the nine included in the survey. About a quarter say they have a great deal of confidence in each to act in the public’s best interests. Americans continue to express lower levels of trust in journalists, business leaders and elected officials. Majorities say they have not too much or no confidence at all in these three groups to act in the public’s best interests. Source: Pew Research.
