Another great episode of the #AlgorithmicFutures @algfutures #podcast, this time talking about the #NuclearMindset.

What I learned from this episode is the importance of long-term thinking, understanding the consequences of your planning decisions, and how "undoable" some long-term decisions are. It's a different approach to #risk, and one far removed from the tech-centric "move fast and break things" mindset.

Does anyone know the status or continuation plans of #CompRisks / #RisksDigest, moderated by #PeterGNeumann?

The topic came up at HN, where the first suggestion was in the past tense. RISKS Digest, begun in August 1985, is still going strong, however, with Volume 33#85, released yesterday:

That said, Peter G. Neumann is now at least 90 years old, and I've seen a few too many projects and initiatives fail for want of a continuity plan.

I don't see any results from toot.cat for the hashtags I'm using here. I'm hoping some other readers might have information.

The Warfang or the City of dragons will stand no longer defiantly against Cynder's might. However, before Spyro can open the gates and let the army flood into the city, he needs to face off against the only guardian who is left. His old mentor and perhaps the closest of his friends. All this without his elemental powers, all this to prove to the army that he is worthy of being a general. That he can bring victory without their queen's might. Would he be strong enough? Explicit risk calculation is only a few centuries old, originally by invented gamers and co-opted by insurance. Experts in their area, either way.

Humans are instinctively fantastic at experimentation & adaptation but not slow, laborious quantification — especially when we’re getting paid to deliver software shinies, not calculate “risk.”

So, why do we ask devs to calculate “#cyber #risk”? Shouldn’t we be designing ways to remove or reduce the relevant hazards? Miss me with the “it’s too hard”

It's all very well to say that the science is fine, and nobody will be hurt - But that doesn't change the social and economic impact of what people believe anyway.

They touch on the fact that the stress from the fear of the radiation impact is damaging to health, but in a somewhat sarcastic manner.

GPT-4 Observed Safety Challenges

GPT-4 demonstrates increased performance in areas such as reasoning, knowledge retention, and
coding, compared to earlier models such as GPT-2 and GPT-3. Many of these improvements
also present new safety challenges, which we highlight in this section.
We conducted a range of qualitative and quantitative evaluations of GPT-4. These evaluations
helped us gain an understanding of GPT-4’s capabilities, limitations, and risks; prioritize our
mitigation efforts; and iteratively test and build safer versions of the model. Some of the specific
risks we explored are:
• Hallucinations
• Harmful content
• Harms of representation, allocation, and quality of service
• Disinformation and influence operations
• Proliferation of conventional and unconventional weapons
• Privacy
• Cybersecurity
• Potential for risky emergent behaviors
• Interactions with other systems
• Economic impacts
• Acceleration
• Overreliance

Loving the NCSC post on Shadow IT, calling it out as a consequence of not meeting user needs. Something I notice they didn't include (possibly because it's not widespread) is domains being a digital asset which often isn't sanctioned or effectively centrally managed. Would love to hear of any examples of lapsed domains or domains not properly protected (e.g. DMARC) being used in real world attacks. https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/shadow-it

Looking for some advise on #infosec #vulnerability management / #risk management process.

Scenario: You have a vendor-supplied container image in your production cloud. A vulnerability scan for it reveals some CVEs. The image is already on the latest version, so you cannot just update to fix it. The details available for the CVEs are murky at best and image source code is not available to you, which hinders any reproduction or exploit susceptibility assessment.

Questions:
1. For internal process, what do you require for burden of proof before filing an internal ticket or asking other staff to address the finding? Is just the existence of the scanner finding enough? Or do you require your #SecOps staff to do a susceptibility / false positive analysis first?
2. Other than filing a ticket with the image maintainer, what do you do to assess and manage the risk until a new version comes out that hopefully addresses the issue?

Gonna poll #privacy and #compliance folks here. This was originally posted on Twitter.

I'm reading a lot on how having a lack of impact in one's job leads to feelings of pointlessness, despair and burnout (or as Emmett Shear calls it, 'Broken Steering' or Sasha Chapin says feeling like a 'dust banana'.)

I have written about how I have largely moved away from a DPO role for this very reason: https://careylening.substack.com/p/welcome

In a related thread, the author over at Liminal Warmth (https://liminalwarmth.substack.com/p/responsiveness-defines-meaningful) adds to this - many of us in knowledge work are effectively paid to sit around and wait for crises, and a large % of the work we actually do is invented in part to help people cope and avoid thinking about all the hurry-up-and-waiting we engage in. I saw this a lot as a #DPO, and likened it to generating 'symbolic representations of the thing' rather than the thing itself.

But I wonder - is that just me? Is it just me who doesn't see #impact in compliance, or do others share that sentiment? If you're in #compliance (#dataprotection #security #risk #KYC etc) do you find impact and value in your role? If so, tell me! I want to know more.

(PS, I already know, people hate Substack and Twitter. If you don't like those services, that's totally fine, consider it acknowledged)

Tim Snyder:

"Both the #risk and the #humiliation were incomparably greater than anything that could happen in #Ukraine. Compared to power in #Russia, land in 🇺🇦 is unimportant.

After what we have just seen, no one should be arguing that #Putin might be backed into a corner in 🇺🇦 and take some terrible decision.

He cannot be backed into a corner in 🇺🇦.
He can only be backed into a corner in 🇷🇺.

And now we know what he does when that happens: record a speech and run away."

Is there another model to help us think about this?

Yes, I think so.

Why use a different model than the risk model?

Because #COVID #Risk is so challenging to think about.

Why?

There are so many moving parts in the risk calculation.

Prof. David Fisman called this the "Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events" pandemic.

Unfortunate events doesn't mean infrequent. Or low impact. The payoff is risk of death, or long term disability. And the risk appears to compound.

Let's play a game, every time you see a headline or concern about the risks of artificial intelligence, replace "AI" with "capitalist corporations".

You will find sentences full of sense like "What should be the limits of capitalist corporations?", "Do capitalist corporations pose an existential risk?", "Let's make sure that capitalist corporations can be safe before continuing building them".

The most powerful AIs are fully controlled by corporations.

@Sivation Risk is something that private enterprise is very curiously dysfunctional about.

To one extent, incorporation and corporations are risk-externalising machines.

To another, they specifically ignore systemic risks or those that they don't understand / feel unable to control.

Some of that latter is explained, I think, by investors' incentives, where to an investor a given enterprise is simply one element within a larger risk pool. Failure is unfortunate but a diversified event. For those directly engaged with an enterprise (its workers, often officers, vendors/suppliers, customers, and frequently neighbours within the space the enterprise operates), that risk is not diversified and is far more consequential.

You could also include employees, consultants, and/or contractors who have high mobility relative to the firm itself. If you're able to hop to another gig, or use a firm as "resume-driven development" (common practice in infotech), then personal and organisational risk profiles are similarly misaligned.

Much of the schizoid behaviour of businesses regarding various risks makes far more sense in this context.

Great push-back from @beuc's #MoniqueGoyens against the insurance lobby: the whole idea of #insurance is the #mutualisation of #risk, so abusing medical records for individual premiums and prices breaks the entire system.
