Today's dog walk around my neighbour's corner. If you zoom in you can also see both dogs on the first and one on the second picture 😉

On the steep rocky shore is a big flat horizontal rock on where a little white dog runs in the distance.

This is Granite which I picked up off the side of my dirt road. It's 3 inches wide and 3.5 long by 2 high (7.6 x 9 x 5 cm). It fits nicely in my palm and is perfect for a Civil Disobedience rally of your choice. Kidding, no violence please. Rocks are for looking at (and carving) not throwing! Carved with a Dremel 4300

i'm at a playground with my two daughters and we went to sit in a gazebo to get out of the sun.

where i see a pile of rocks, my daughters are very excited.

look at the *beautiful* rocks, they say. there are sparkly ones and spotted ones. someone made a decoration.

they're now busily augmenting the interior design with their own master strokes.

Deformed bedding in meta#sedimentary #rocks

The horizontal bedding of the #Squantum Member of the #Roxbury Conglomerate (#Neoproterozoic, #Boston Bay Group) has been disturbed locally.

In the #glacial #tillite interpretation of the Squantum (favored through at least the 1970s), the distortion might be caused by glaciotectonic drag at the ice base. The current interpretation as a #debrite or #turbidite would probably attribute the deformations to synsedimentary slumping. My #photo. #fieldTrip

This color photo show a circa 12 cm vertical extent of sedimentary rocks. In the upper part of the image, beds are inclined upward to the left. Near the center of the image, a bed has been rolled over itself. These features could have been caused by sediment slumping leftward, possibly in a debris flow. There is a white balance card with inch and centimeter scales at the bottom left. My photo.

Rapid changes in #clast size in #sedimentary #rocks

The #Neoproterozoic #Squantum Member of the #Roxbury Conglomerate (#Boston Bay Group) transitions from sandstone, to almost-clast-supported conglomerate, to laminated argillite…in about 25 cm. Fifty years ago, it was interpreted as a #glacial deposit and called the Squantum #Tillite, presumably associated with the #Gaskiers Glaciation. Paucity of evidence (e.g., few scratches or faceted clasts) suggests a debris flow. My #photo.

A circa 25 cm high image shows a sandstone at bottom, conglomerate with angular clasts in the middle, and laminate argillite at the top. A white balance card with cm and inch scales is at the bottom left. My photo.

NASA’s Perseverance rover has discovered a tiny rock that looks like a book on Mars. The rock is likely a piece of sedimentary rock that was eroded by wind or water. The book-like rock could reveal clues about the ancient environment and history of the red planet.

A very healthy bunch of bright green lilies with yellow flowers grow out of an outcropping of silt along the edge of a lake. A long, young tree tree (felled by beavers) rests across the water. Lighter white flowers grow in front of the lilies.
A large mushroom grows out of the ground amid some grasses and brush, as well as small rocks.
A flowered plant grows out of a lake's shore. Trees and a lake are visible in the background.

Exciting #geology news: at long last, ocean drillers exhume a bounty of #rocks from Earth’s #mantle.

Some definite mood whiplash in this article from @voooos - the excitement at getting a long borehole through mantle rocks, but the sadness that the achievement of this long-held goal comes as the Joides Resolution drilling ship is on the verge of being retired. https://www.science.org/content/article/long-last-ocean-drillers-exhume-bounty-rocks-earth-s-mantle

Interbedded argillaceous & tuffaceous #sediments

These photos are of #Cambridge #Argillite, exposed above the #Squantum Member of the #Roxbury Conglomerate (#Neoproterozoic). Prior to the 1970s or so, the Squantum Member was interpreted as #glacial sediments; it's now broadly interpreted as debris flows, with the Cambridge being distal turbidites overlying it. I lead a field trip here for #UMassBoston. See captions.

#outcrop #fieldTrip #photo #rocks #tuff #Fufjilm #Venus 65mm #macro #Quincy

This map shows the location of the outcrop (black pin near center), at the north boundary of Quincy, and across Dorchester Bay from the University of Massachusetts Boston; Boston is at the top center. OpenStreetMap in MyTracks.
A close up of fine laminations in Cambridge Argillite. The light layers are probably volcanic ash or tuff, which have been highly altered. The magenta-hued layers are argillaceous: clay, silt, and fine sand. The tuffaceous layers are circa 1 cm thick; scale at bottom is blurred because of limited depth of field. The scene is about 5 cm tall. My photo.

This photograph (scene is about 60 cm tall) shows interbedded argillite (smoother, pinkish, laminated rock) and tuffaceous (volcanic ash) layers that have been altered and weathered back from the rock face. The scale at top is about 5 cm tall. My photo.

A sunny dog walk down to the #TravaudPier. It's fascinating wherever sea pinks can find a place to live and bloom. Along the pier next to the fields are many little flowers on the wall. Sitting or lying on the wall and listening at the ocean is sooo relaxing. Only my youngsters can't understand why I'm lying on the wall 😉

A concrete pier wall with a low railing. Below the concrete you can see cliffs. Between the concrete and the cliff is a bunch of blooming sea pinks on the vertical wall. At high water they must be mostly under water.
Many little yellow flowers and some sea pinks along the wall between the field and the pier
Sitting on the wall at the end of the pier and looking at the cliffy shote and the ocean. Hills in the distance, the sky is blue with a thin layer of white clouds
Looking along the pier from the end to the beginning at the beach. Green field and green-brown hills around. Down to my feet my two little white dogs, one is looking at me, thebother is sitting and watching her comrad.

Amongst other fun on a family visit to Boston this week, we visited the Bunker Hill Monument, which it turns out is not on Bunker Hill, because neither was the Battle of Bunker Hill (a pyrrhic victory for the British in the Revolutionary War) that it commemorates.

The monument is built of granite: I didn’t see any on the monument itself, but the curbstones on the walkway around it had some very nice pegmatite veins. #geology #rocks

Photograph of a steep rock cliff made of basalt. Portions of the basalt jut out from the cliff and have the appearance of partially-raised theater curtains. The sunshine on the rocks highlights the reddish color of the basalt, caused by the high amount of iron in the rock. Beyond the cliff, the afternoon sky is blue with some white clouds. A couple weeks ago, I was walking along a beach at Camano Island. The beach is below some bluffs of advance outwash sand and capped by till. There's more to that story, maybe later. There were a few cool rocks that had dropped to the beach from the bluffs, probably out of the till. Here's one rock that perfectly illustrates relative age dating and the principle of cross-cutting relationships. Basic geology 101, right? #geology #rocks #agedating #crosscuttingrelationships #relativedating

Finished the rocks! It started as a meditative exercise drawing the rocks in pen and ink, then I got curious about filling them in, so I just started playing with paint and experimented with different colors and ways of shading. Watercolors are like ukuleles - the simplest moves can be so pretty, even when you have no idea what you’re doing. :)

"You just look at #rocks, and have beards". Lots to chew on in this new preprint on @eartharxiv on attitudes to #geology in the UK, from a survey that included both those who had and had not studied it at school/university.

Some of the perceived barriers to recruitment are familiar: the lack of diversity; accessibility & climate issues surrounding fieldwork; the association with environmentally damaging industries & exploitation.
