Appropriately discovered at a fen-edge site in #Suffolk, this charming #Roman plate brooch was shaped as a little duck.
The coloured enamel represents a technique called champlevé, in which vitreous enamel is produced by fusing powdered coloured glass, or mixing glass with a pigment, then heating it to between 750-850 °C. The blue would be made with copper or cobalt, the red with oxidised copper, and the yellow with antimony or lead.

Einen Rückblick in der Vorvergangenheit zu schreiben ist eine echte Herausforderung. Das Wörtchen "hatte" wird dabei grundsätzlich Opfer der Wiederholungsprüfung von Papyrus Autor. Umformulierung machen den Text aber meist nur kompliziert. Aber da muss ich jetzt durch, auch wenn es anstrengt 😃.

Höhen und Tiefen eines Romanautors: Das vierte Kapitel ging mir leicht von der Hand und war sehr zufriedenstellend. Nach der Hälfte des fünften Kapitels bin ziemlich unzufrieden damit. Holprig geschrieben, ohne roten Faden und ohne die eigentlich beabsichtigte Vorstellung des Protagonisten. Hier ist noch reichlich Luft nach oben.

Last week I paid a visit to open-air museum Carnuntum in the city of Petronell. This was my second trip to Austria from Bratislava, but unlike the first one, by car. Anyway, the museum was amazing. I have never seen roman "ruins" restored to such level. The main part depicts an #ancient #roman city of #Carnuntum, including thermal spa, then we took a short stroll to amphitheater and on our way home, stopped in a indoors museum, where delicate (including golden and silver) artifacts were presented. From frequently traveling between slovakia and czechia, I almost forgot that people do indeed speak different language beyond the border. I bought one brochure in slovak language for my dad and one in English for my friend.

An elegant 18th c. porcelain jug? No! It's instead a 1st c. BCE-1st c. CE #Roman *glass* oinchoe, imitating the usual metal form of this vessel. The body was blown, but the rest was cold cut. Stunning. Certainly found in a tomb.
