Given Sega's cabinet designs at the time, I'd like to think it would've looked like the cabinet to, say, Astro Blaster (with tons of glorious woodgrain paneling), but with some sweet Pig Newton marquee/control area art!

I looked far and wide but I couldn't find any Pig Newton comic strips, but I really, really want to know how Sega discovered this and decided to turn it into a video game. Between levels, though, you also get such knee-slappers as "Boy! I never sausage a player!", and "Wow! You've got a lard of points!". Pig Newton saw the titanic worlds of "video games" and "comedy" collide in a way never seen before, and its reverberations are still felt even today!

Unfortunately for you, a pack of wolves is intent on capturing you, and they constantly prowl below the tree and attempt to chop it down with axes. Using the superpower known as "gravity", you attack the wolves by dropping things on them, where "things" range from apples, to beehives, to horseshoes, to... mini nukes from Fallout?! You must collect all eggs to complete a level, but getting caught by the wolves costs a life.
[🧵 2/x] Pig Newton is a (as far as I can tell) unreleased puzzle-platformer developed by Sega in 1983. It is a game for almost everyone, and by "almost everyone", I mean the following:

- Fans of Newtonian mechanics

- Fans of The National Review, especially its comics section (yes, really)
- Fans of the wolf from the Soviet cartoon "Well, Just You Wait!"
#SEGA has cancelled #Hyenas quite close to release, resulting in redundancies at Creative Assembly. Seeing a game get axed at the finish line is tragic, as that’s years of difficult work for nothing.

Finally!!! I got a #Sega Out Run cabinet a couple of months ago and it took me forever to get started with a restoration. Internally, the monitor has received a cap kit and new flyback. For the exterior, since it’s not what I’m best at, I just did what was really necessary: remove rust, paint, change mat. Quite happy with the result. #arcade #gaming #arcademachine #arcaderacing

Over 30 years later, the stellar #MegaDrive horizontal shooter #GleyLancer has finally received the Western #SegaGenesis release it always deserved thanks to Retro-bit.
More proof that the Mega Drive refuses to die (or that we #Sega fans will let it).
I keep coming back to Lemmings on the Game Gear. While it is missing some graphical details compared to other ports, it’s a surprisingly full featured port. And it looks gorgeous.

[🧵 4/x] Moving on to the arcade unit itself: while Zaxxon might not have the flashiest cabinet, I happen to absolutely adore it! That wood paneling gives me so much nostalgia for "the Wood Generation" (70's/80's, when wood paneling was in vogue), and the contrast of the silver/black of the control panel makes you feel like you're in a warm, wood-panneled spaceship. Maybe it looks a little "functionality-over-form", but I can't help but love that such a (at the time) futuristic game occupied a cabinet that felt so immediately familiar to us in the (then-"Wood Generation") present.
[🧵 3/x] Zaxxon immediately stood out in the arcade for being one of the first games (that I'm aware of) featuring an isometric perspective. This gives the game a distinct 3-dimensional appearance at a time when most games were strictly 2-dimensional in perspective. Not only does this look cool, it also requires new skills of the player- specifically, adjusting the altitude of the ship in real-time to avoid obstacles and/or precisely land shots on enemies.
[🧵 2/x] Zaxxon is a space shooter created by Sega, comprised of three distinct stages. Stages 1 and 3 see you flying through large “space fortresses”, while stage 2 requires you to fly in free space between them. Each stage has various hazards (turrets, rockets, fighter ships, etc.) to defeat, while also contending with an ever-decreasing fuel supply. At the end of the third stage, you fight a large robot (who I *believe* is the titular “Zaxxon”), after which the waves repeat, albeit with higher difficulty.
I love that, in the year 2023, a studio announcing that its new game is coming to "modern consoles, #MegaDrive, and #NeoGeo" isn't completely shocking to me, because it's not the first time I've heard that.
I also love that the #SegaGenesis is trouncing the #SNES in the longevity department. 😏

Since today is the 24th anniversary of the release of the Dreamcast in North America (9/9/99), I'll share my own odd Dreamcast story.
I'll preface it by saying I was 19 in 1999, and wasn't really playing video games, I was moving back up the coast after finishing high school. So I have very little experience with the console.
But three years ago in February, I was driving home and spotted a Dreamcast box on the top of my neighbor's trash. And I thought, oh cool, a Dreamcast box. No way anything is in there. So I grabbed it.
But there WAS a Dreamcast in there. Nearly complete, too - with controllers, manual, even a game (see photo). It looked brand new, really. Missing the cords, but after a friend on Twitter gifted me a cord, it started right up!
Can't imagine why someone would throw it out other than kids leaving home or maybe revenge against a boyfriend or husband or something? Or maybe they just didn't want to sell it or take it to a thrift store? Anyway, their loss, my win. At least I saved it from sitting in a landfill.
I have no games for it (I sold that basketball game), and I don't need em- eventually I plan on putting a GDEMU in it to emulate. I hear it's pretty easy.
Psyched to try all those badass shooters!

Looks perfect! (I hope the bad scrolling is actually really smooth on the #Amiga, this seems to be a video capturing issue). The gameplay looks like a 1:1 clone of the original #SEGA #MegaDrive game which I know very well, one of the best games ever created.
Anyway, what makes the game unusual in the Sonic franchise is that it uses trackballs to control Sonic and friends! Kinda like Marble Madness. Looking at footage of some of the later stages, I cannot imagine the strain those trackballs were put under, since you have to go FAST and have very little margin for error as the game goes on.

Unfortunately, I've never actually played SegaSonic the Hedgehog- between its Japan-only release and its (I assume) rarity, I've never actually seen a cabinet in the wild. In fact, I'm having difficulty just locating a photo of a cabinet online. I assume they came in Japanese "Candy" Cabs, although I found a photo of a (custom?) cabinet that seems more US-centric in design (photo from SEGAbits birdsite acct).

SegaSonic the Hedgehog is Japan-only arcade game starring Sonic, as well as two lesser-known (but fan-favorite!) characters: Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo. Two more #SegaGenesis games I never played in my younger days acquired, and at a price I couldn’t refuse!
…and already beat #Quackshot last night. 😅 Definitely an interesting game, especially with the whole element of hopping between areas. But, a few super annoying parts brings the game down a tad.
Only briefly tried #SubTerrania, and boy did it kick my ass.
Did I buy the Zara Kids #SegaSaturn fanny pack and then alter the strap to be long enough for an adult to wear? Yes, I did.

Earlier in the week I had some fun playing a newly-translated Dreamcast game, Cool Cool Toon!
New translations feel like new game releases for old systems and I love it.
Cool Cool Toon is like SNK's version of Parappa or Gitaroo Man with very Dreamcast-style asthetics!
Although I think some earlier generations had better graphic design, I always loved the Japanese Sega Saturn cover art. It so perfectly encapsulates that feeling of 'awesome japanese game you'll never get to play'
