There's been so much info around G and Bing's AI results but not so much on what Brave (the search engines) is doing. and they're doing a pretty good job! Including citing the sources, showing the URLs and the logos, etc.

Why do we need yet another robots.txt tester?
Because the testers out there are toy tools. They test 1 URL & one user-agent only. You need a bulk tester.
e.g:
32 URLs x 5 User-agents = 160 tests.
Not fun.
You can do this with one line of code.
My 2nd notebook that does this (checks if you have disallowed URLs in your XML sitemap) was just added to the JupyterNaas repo, and you can use it right away:
Some time ago, I created a #linkbuilding database. After redoing it 3 times to make improvements, I think it is shareable now.
In short, it has a form to add websites and another form to add the links I get for my clients. With SQL commands, I have the software create the spreadsheets that keep everything organized.
The main advantage is that I don't repeat myself. Every datum is entered just once.

Putting together a small study on rank differences between the regular Google search results and the new #AI #SGE snippet.
Here’s a surprising finding - the average page rank of links featured by AI is… 8.2
Most of those links appear at the bottom of the initial SERP and 40% of them aren’t even in the top 50 SERP results!
The #SEO of #ScienceDirect is so annoying.
I search any term, e.g. Mass Spectrometry. (one of) The top hit is 'Mass Spectrometry - an overview' provided by them.
It seems to be a decent review. However, it is just a compile of lots of papers with this keyword. Many of them are irrelevant, and others are not reviews I need.

@admin I think it does in a good way.
Something I didn’t make explicit because I was trying to get this out quickly is that the pages linked in these AI summaries are often NOT the top ranking results.
I’ve noticed plenty of examples where the main source for AI was a link from the second page of results!
So this means less dominance by the same big companies with huge #SEO teams and more of a fair shot for all the little guys

SGE and Non-Deterministic Results
One thing I'm interested in learning is whether the content in the Google's new SGE changes by individual or over time.
Generative AI is non-deterministic (you get something different each time) but Google could be cacheing content for queries.
Or they could have a TTL of sorts so in another day it would be different.
And if the content is different it seems like the links might also be different. A tracking nightmare!
1/2

Looking at other people’s initial impressions of Google’s new AI search beta, and I feel like a lot of the discourse is kind of missing the point?
Yes, all the usual questions about #AI and #LLMs are still important. But what makes Google’s experiment in particular interesting is that it’s NOT a chatbot.
It’s a different UX for generative AI. And its an experience that is grounded in search versus Bing which felt like it was just a search-tinted coat of paint on top of ChatGPT
Google SGE First Thoughts
My hot take after using Google's SGE is that it is a hammer looking for a nail.
Specific hot takes:
I'm struck by the fact that the SGE treats most queries like instant answers. And that's not what I want when searching.
The amount of information in the SGE is often overwhelming and will likely cause paralysis.
It frequently gets the intent wrong for queries.
The SGE fires on terms it shouldn't.

Bing seems to have a new feature on their video SERPs: upon hovering over one result, it offers a link ("More like this") to a specialized result page.
If it is a video from a YouTube channel, it also offers a link to a page, where more videos from that channel are displayed.
On this new page more videos from said channel are shown plus some basic key facts and a button to "Sign in to Follow".

Many thought Google's SGE wouldn't cover YMYL content, including health/medical. I'm seeing SGE cover health and medical topics like this one (strep throat). I'll test more, but interesting to see that. YMYL content isn't entirely out of the picture like we thought it could be. :)

Can someone who already has access to SGE check if there's correlation between SERP position and appearing in Generated answer as a source?
#SEO
Should small business owners like me who do everything to make their presence known in the World Wide Web be alarmed? I need to know.
"The end design goal seems to be "no one will ever click on an external search link ever again," and that would force a lot of sites to shut down."
I got early access to Google's new #AI powered search experience, and I wrote about my first impressions here: https://kalynamarketing.com/blog/google-sge-review
Main thoughts:
I'm impressed. Google created a refreshing implementation of generative AI to search.
SGE never made me feel like it was trying to be more than a search engine, or force a clunky chatbot dynamic on me.
I don't know how practical it will be, but I am pleasantly surprised so far

I am currently working on a successor to my SEO Shortcuts Chrome extension called "Commands”. This extension is primarily intended for SEO and Web Perf specialists.

Quick reminder how much SERP rankings change on a daily basis. This case is a B2B site so drops at weekends make sense as the intent for certain keywords changes and spikes as unexpected events, global and local, cause keywords and topics to become popular for short amounts of time as Google tests out what it needs to promote up the rankings (*my assumption). Nothing sits still for long in #seo

"... it is one thing to build a search engine, and an entirely different thing to convince regular users of the need to switch to a better choice. Contrary to popular belief, convincing users to pay for a better experience was actually a less difficult problem compared to getting them to try a new search engine in the first place."
Yeah, marketing isn't so easy is it?
I ran into an article about the "last-modification" date HTTP header, which claimed it would be bad for your SEO to have it set incorrectly (specifically, always set to "now') by plugin.
This is not the case, it's not bad for SEO. Yes, it's good to use last-modification date headers appropriately, as this helps with crawling efficiently, but it won't negatively affect your site's overall SEO if used wrongly. Your site won't rank lower. #seo

Rich Results test suddenly failing? URL Inspector live test getting 403s? Could be your firewall, these tools have changed user-agent, so whilst they come from googlebot IP addresses, they don't have googlebot User-agents, so you might like to add 'em to the allowed list.

@ilovechoclates_ @simoncox Every now and then, a site doing stupid short-cuts like this will end up getting #seo traffic from search. Most won't. It's a gamble, like you could gamble when stealing a neighbor's fruits at night and selling them. There's no long-term path though: at most you can make more junk sites. And, when it goes bad, nobody will sympathise with you. IMO it's better business sense to build a long-term presence.
(compatible; Google-InspectionTool/1.0;)
Am I losing my mind or is this new? Hasn't GSC inspection always used the standard gbot ua? We're getting tons of errors this morning because this UA wasn't flagged as a gbot. cc @johnmu @rustybrick #seo
"Moreover, researchers have also discovered that it’s probably mathematically impossible to secure the training data for a large language model like #GPT-4 or #PaLM 2. This was outlined in a research paper that Google themselves tried to censor, an act that eventually led the Google-employed author, El Mahdi El Mhamdi, to leave the company. The paper has now been updated to say what the authors wanted it to say all along, and it’s a doozy."

If you have 'The Great Suspender Original' Chrome extension installed - delete it. It is no longer available on the Chrome store because it hijacks the Google Results pages inserting an iframe from yellow-pages.com with your search term and inserts several, I'm assuming, paid adverts that look like organic results.
